HOUSTON (AP) — Marcus Semien hit his 250th career home run and Adolis García also went deep to back up a strong start by Nathan Eovaldi and give the Texas Rangers a 5-1, series clinching victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Eovaldi (7-3) limited Houston to five hits and a run with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings for his third straight win.

Houston starter Hunter Brown (9-4) allowed five hits and four runs while striking out eight in five innings as the AL West leaders lost for the fifth time in six games. It was the second straight tough outing for the All-Star, who gave up a season-high six runs in his last start against Cleveland.
Wyatt Langford walked to open the second and the Rangers made it 1-0 when he scored on a triple by Evan Carter. There were two outs in the inning when Carter scored on a ground-rule double by Ezequiel Duran to push the lead to 2-0.
García's third homer in the last four games put Texas ahead 3-0 with two outs in the third inning.
Carter doubled to start the fourth and Kyle Higashioka singled before Carter scored on a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Osuna to make it 4-0.

The Astros cut it to 4-1 on a home run by Zack Short with no outs in the sixth inning.
Semien's shot with one out in the eighth inning was his second of the series and gave him 250 in his 13-year career.

Shortly after Matt, a four-star quarterback and MaxPreps baseball All-American, committed to the University of Kentucky, his family lit off blue and white fireworks at their home in Hamilton. Ponatoski expected that maybe 15 people would show up; the expansive front lawn was full of cars as around 100 of his friends and family members were on hand to watch him make his decision. On the football field, Moeller's Matt Ponatoski holds school records for career passing yards, career passing touchdowns and single-game passing touchdowns. Last fall, Ponatoski threw for 4,217 yards and 57 touchdowns, both single-season school records, to lead Moeller to its first Division I state championship game since 2013. For his career, he has 7,654 passing yards, 87 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. He became the second player in school history to be named Ohio Mr. Football after Jordan Marshall won the award in 2023. He was also named the Gatorade Ohio Football Player of the Year. From June 17 to 19, Ponatoski attended the Elite 11 finals in Southern California. It is dubbed as the nation's premier quarterback camp series since 1999. He competed alongside Tennessee commit Faizon Brandon, Texas commit Dia Bell and Landon Duckworth, who is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the class of 2026. After being named the Pro Day MVP and performing well in the camp's 7-on-7 competition, he earned high praise from various scouting services. Kentucky currently has five quarterbacks on its roster for this fall: graduate students Zach Calzada and Beau Allen, and freshmen Cutter Boley, Stone Saunders and Brennen Ward. In 2024, the Wildcats went 4-8, including a 1-7 mark in the Southeastern Conference. That snapped an eight-season bowl eligibility streak. They won four straight bowl games from 2018 to 2021. He threw for 10,354 yards and 78 touchdowns before winning a Super Bowl with the New York Giants. When Ponatoski informed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan of his decision, he could tell the staff truly valued him. It was special for me because he told me it was one of the better days of his football career so far," Ponatoski said. On the baseball diamond this spring, Ponatoski hit .440 with seven doubles, four home runs, 38 RBIs and 12 stolen bases as the Crusaders advanced to their third straight regional final. In two seasons, the sure-handed shortstop has a .415 batting average with a .518 on-base percentage and a .620 slugging percentage. He stopped coaching when Becky was pregnant with Matt's younger sister, Kendall, an up-and-coming softball star at Badin. "He set the foundation, and it's been working for a really long time. He's been working with me, really, since I was born," Ponatoski said. At the end of the season, Ponatoski was named the Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year. Kentucky football's Mark Stoops is on ropes. But don't count him out in SEC
Kentucky football is in trouble. Mark Stoops is the only one who can save it, which may seem a bit ironic because he's been the coach for the past 13 seasons and is responsible for its current state. The Wildcats are coming off a 4-8 season last year and face the same SEC schedule that made them face three College Football Playoff programs last season in Texas, Georgia and Tennessee and two more programs that were on the periphery of an at-large bid in Ole Miss and South Carolina. In all, nine programs on UK's schedule played in a bowl game last season. Advertisement Having to go through the SEC gauntlet was among myriad reasons why plenty of Stoops' coaching peers and friends warned him not to take the job back in 2012: It's a basketball school. Its recruiting base is too shallow. Winning can't be sustained there. The Cats appear headed in the wrong direction, just as the program did back in 2012 when Stoops was hired, if he can't change course soon. The same reasons why he defied the naysayers back then are the same reasons why he could turn it around this season. Stoops saw enough potential in UK back then to take a chance. And entering a season in which the odds are once again stacked against the Cats might just be the place he needs to recalibrate what works in the program. Advertisement There are a number of memes circulating on social media of 'motivated' Mark Stoops, which initially was a sarcastic reference to an interview he had with Kentucky Sports Radio in the spring but has now morphed into a bit of a movement. The success he had — recording two 10-win seasons and taking the Cats to eight straight bowl games for the first time in program history — didn't come easy but was consistent enough to where Stoops may have gotten a bit too comfortable. He had some missteps like thinking his offensive coordinator was interchangeable. The Cats had a different OC in each of the past five seasons including new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen coaching in 2021, leaving for a year and returning in 2023 — before heading back to the NFL. Bush Hamdan's return as offensive coordinator will mark the first time since Eddie Gran held the position from 2016-2020 that UK has had the same OC in consecutive years. Advertisement Continuity matters, which is why just the optics of former associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow leaving to become the general manager at rival Louisville after being in Lexington for the entirety of Stoops' tenure was a tough blow. But if we've learned anything about Stoops in his decade-plus in Lexington, it's that the man from Youngstown, Ohio, wasn't raised to back down from a fight. He's landed a few punches of his own in recruiting after Marrow's exodus with 15 commitments including quarterback Matt Ponatoski, a two-sport star from Cincinnati. UK also flipped receiver Denairius Gray earlier this month after he originally committed to Auburn. What matters, of course, is that Stoops gets some of those wins on the field next season. Kentucky hasn't had back-to-back losing seasons since posting identical 5-7 records in Stoops' second and third years at the helm in 2014 and 2015. Advertisement He's got a greater challenge now, maybe even monumental given the schedule. Then again, it's not much different than the low expectations he faced when he first took over the program. Chinese swimmers dope-tested the most ahead of World Aquatics Championships
Chinese swimmers took more anti-doping tests this year than swimmers from any other country ahead of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this month, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said in a report. From January 1, Chinese swimmers had an average of 8.8 anti-doping tests versus those from the US who were tested 4.1 times and those from Britain who were tested 2.2 times, the report showed. Swimmers competing as neutrals – mainly those with Russian nationality – were tested 8.2 times on average. In total, the Aquatics Integrity Unit conducted 4,018 anti-doping tests on athletes participating in the Singapore event scheduled for July 11 to 22. 'The report underscores World Aquatics unwavering commitment to fair competition and the highest standards of integrity in aquatic sport,' it said. The China Swimming Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment. China's swimming team has faced heightened scrutiny since revelations in April 2024 that 23 swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication in 2021 but were permitted to compete in the Tokyo Olympics that year. The World Anti-Doping Agency accepted the findings of a Chinese investigation that the results were due to contamination from a hotel kitchen. An independent review backed WADA's handling of the case. Testing will remain in force until the end of the event, with 830 samples to be collected during 24 days of competition, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said. China's male freestyle sprinter Wang Haoyu was tested 13 times, while 200 meter breaststroke world record holder Qin Haiyang was tested 12 times, the report showed.
