Tony-winner 'Purpose' succeeds on the backs of its matriarchs

Following six Tony nominations and two wins, the Pulitzer Prize-winning family drama 'Purpose is losing its on-stage matriarch.
LaTanya Richardson Jackson will perform with the original Broadway cast for the last time July 13, as the show heads toward the end of its run on August 31. Brenda Pressley, who replaces her, has a long Broadway tenure that includes 'Dreamgirls' and 'Cats.'
'Purpose,' the play from 'Appropriate' playwright and Tony winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins borrows from the lives of civil rights leaders like Jesse Jackson and other powerful Black figures to create a family drama set on one weekend in Chicago with the Jasper family.
Working alongside patriarch Solomon who marched with Rev. Martin Luther King, Claudine, played by Richardson Jackson has kept the family legacy alive from behind the scenes. Naz, their youngest and more free-spirited son, narrates the audience through the tension-filled belated birthday weekend for his mother.
Not fond of coming home to Chicago or sharing his famous lineage, Naz is nonetheless there to celebrate both his mother and his brother Junior, a state senator recently released from prison for embezzlement.
Junior's wife Morgan, the mother of their two kids who is set to head to prison herself, is not thrilled to be there either. This is the drama that greets Naz's friend Aziza from Harlem who tagged along for the ride. Beneath the illusions of Black Excellence, she learns just how complex prominence and legacy can really be.
'Purpose' is also filled with new history all its own, even if it stings. Its Tony win for Best Play is the first in nearly 40 years for a Black playwright since August Wilson won it with 'Fences' in 1987, a distinction Branden Jacobs-Jenkins doesn't find flattering.
'It's a little bit embarrassing that I have to be that person because I was three years old when that happened, and I currently have a four-year-old daughter,' Jacobs-Jenkins told NBC News.
'There are folks who have been in contention,' he added — save for 2018 and 2021, a play by a Black playwright has been nominated every year since 2016.
Jacobs-Jackson was not the only person on the crew making milestones. Two-time Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, who signed on when the script just had 30 pages according to Jacobs-Jenkins, made her Broadway directorial debut. Tony winner Kara Young earned her fourth straight Tony nomination and second win as Aziza, with the latter making her the first Black actor to win back-to-back Tonys. Richardson Jackson, who made her Broadway directorial debut with the 2022 revival of August Wilson's 'The Piano Lesson,' earned her second Tony nomination. Jon Michael Hill earned his second Tony nomination as Naz. Playing father and son Solomon and Junior, Harry Lennix and Glenn Davis both earned their first Tony nominations.
As matriarchs of the stage, Rashad and Richardson Jackson are key factors to the show's success, Jacobs-Jenkins and Young said.
'I would argue that she's one of the most important theater artists working today,' Jacobs-Jenkins said of Rashad. 'She's someone who has worked with some of the most important theater artists in the twentieth century and the twenty-first century. She was in the room with Michael Bennett during [the] 'Dreamgirls' original company. She was in the original company of 'The Wiz.''
Richardson Jackson, Young said, 'has been such a beautiful pioneer in the American theater . . . she's incredibly remarkable. She's a part of the legacy of 'For Colored Girls,' and she was Douglas Turner Ward's assistant director. She's part of a lot of the foundational parts of Black theater in a really special way.'
In addition to playing Junior on stage, Davis, also co-artistic director at Steppenwolf, helped originate the production. He said he believes 'Purpose' truly does have a legacy of its own worth celebrating.
'In the specificity of what Brandon has written and what Miss Phylicia Rashad has directed, they have created something so indelible and so clearly outlined in terms of these characters and their motivations and their ideas and notions about themselves in the world that people who don't look like them necessarily still see the human experience. And so, in that respect, they see themselves.'

A major WWE match announced for SummerSlam 2025 is in serious jeopardy after a top superstar wasn't allowed to travel back to the United States. On the first night of the August 2 and 3 double header, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul are set to face Randy Orton and Grammy Award-winning singer Jelly Roll in a tag team match. McIntyre, known as the Scottish Warrior, has been back in the UK for a friend's wedding in England over the weekend, but he's now claimed he was stopped from boarding his flight back to the US where he has lived for a number of years. 'There's now a good chance I don't make #SummerSlam,' he captioned a video on X as he talking into his phone camera from a field. 'It's quite a week I've had. You wanna know how it's been capped off? i can't get back into America, They wouldn't let me board my flight,' he said in the video. 'I'm in England still, at my buddy's wedding – what a wedding it was. Planning to go back, train for SummerSlam, but no, no, no, no, I got blocked. **Warning – the below video includes strong language** 'Wife and I walked up to the gate, trying to check in, always goes perfectly fine. Not this time.' McIntyre noted that there was an issue with his documentation, despite never having a problem any of the other times he's been travelling. He continued: ''Drew, you don't have your US passport. I know who you are. I know you've lived there for a long time, I know you're showing me pictures of your US passport, and your global entry. ''I know exactly who you are, your property and the likes. But no, we can't let you in the country buddy. 'So my wife and I panic, we say we've got a sick animal at home, we're good people, we care about our animals, we care about people. In the end, his wife travelled back alone 'against her will' to see their pet cat, while McIntyre had to turn around and leave the airport. Ever the professional, the former world champion used the real life incident to continue his on-screen feud with Jelly Roll. 'Here I am. So what happened, what changed this trip? Jelly Roll. You know somebody, got some connections? You've got your 15 minutes of fame right now, can get away with some stuff? You're hot, soon you will not be, so you're getting it in when you can,' he quipped. 'You realised when I took off my shirt on SmackDown, you went , 'Oh my God! All that aura, I'm screwed!' The 2019 drama series features a stellar cast and is a 'wonderful rendering of the classic satirical novel' A "must-watch" World War II series is currently available to stream. The gripping drama features an ensemble cast and is based on "one of the greatest books ever written". Telly fans are being urged to make sure to catch the mini-series while it is readily available, with viewers hailing the "amazing" cast and "wonderful" retelling of the book. Hulu series Catch-22 first appeared on the small screen in 2019, as an adaptation of Joseph Heller's celebrated 1961 novel of the same name. The series follows the journey of Captain John Yossarian (played by Christopher Abbott) and his comrades during World War II as they carry out their duties for their country. Their freedom depends on finishing a set number of operations. Yet, precisely when they approach their liberation, the mission tally is consistently raised, throwing them back into danger, reports the Express. The ensemble cast also features George Clooney as Scheisskopf, Emmy-winning Argo star Kyle Chandler as Colonel Cathcart, Godfather of Harlem's Rafi Gavron as Aarfy, Reacher's Daniel David Stewart as Milo, and Major Crimes' Graham Patrick Martin as Orr, amongst others. One TV fan gave the show a 10/10 rating on IMDb. They said: "Fantastic. The entire cast of this series is amazing. "It has all the drama and humor but not as slapstick as the movie. I've been glued to the TV since it was released. You will fall in love with these characters and the actors who portray them." A second viewer commented: "Wonderful rendering of the classic satirical novel. This is a very enjoyable watch, especially if you read the book and saw the movie. "The acting is superb and the battle scenes are realistic but not too graphically violent. I appreciate a director and writer who do not feel they must gross us out at every turn. It has a nice subtlety and that was lacking in the original movie." Another reviewer praised it as: "One of the greatest books ever written, certainly as an anti-war film." Speaking about Abbott's performance as John Yossarian, they added: "His face is so emotive and he captured the complexity of his character." Wrapping up, they wrote: "For those of you who totally missed the point and were expecting a regular war movie, did you get what the title means?" A fourth viewer hailed it as "a must watch" and said: "Perfect mix of comedy and drama. Made me laugh one second and get emotional the next." Lenny Henry used humour to protect himself while dealing with racist childhood bullying

Sir Lenny Henry, who grew up in Dudley, opened up about the racist bullying he endured during his childhood Comedian Lenny Henry detailed how he used humour as his 'sword and shield' against the racist bullies in his childhood. The 66-year-old was born in Dudley in August 1958 to parents Winston and Winifred. His full name is Lenworth George Henry, and he was named after the doctor who delivered him at Burton Road Hospital. ‌ Sir Lenny previously revealed the horrific racist abuse that has plagued him, particularly as part of a Jamaican family in the West Midlands in the 70s. He had said that "Keep Britain white" was often painted on walls in the area he lived in, and that people would hound his mother on the streets, "asking where her tail was". ‌ ‌ In a new interview, the comedian said a lot of his defence from racism came from his late mother, Winifred. She had 'horrible things' yelled at her in the street after she moved to England from Jamaica as part of the Windrush Generation. At the time, Black children living in the area he grew up in were advised to be outside in pairs due to the racist abuse they went through. Speaking to The Sunday Times' Culture Magazine, he explained: "We were in the midst of this maelstrom, but you don't know that when you're kids. You just gravitate to people who like you, or want to snog you. ‌ "My humour became my sword and shield. I could deflect something with a joke. I was being beaten up by one kid when I started to talk about the ridiculousness of us rolling around on the floor like we were married. "People started to laugh and suddenly people thought I was worth something. I was still punched, but I'd have people protecting me. I had three white friends by the time I was 12: Greg, Mac and Tom. I still know them today and they saved my life, really. They encouraged me to be funny." ‌ The racism continued well into his career, with him previously explaining that the National Front smeared "N.F" in excrement on his and ex-wife Dawn French's door. They were even threatened with burning rags through the door and abusive letters. Dawn once said: 'We had words scratched into every panel of every car — very offensive, derogatory, racist terminology.' Lenny's career began when he appeared on New Faces at aged 15, eventually winning the show with his impression of Stevie Wonder. Two years later, he started doing a stand up routine on The Black and White Minstrel show, where performers in blackface sang minstrel songs. But being the only black performer in this intrinsically racist show gave Lenny "creeping dread". 'I would arrive at the theatre and know that I would be the only actual black person in the building, perhaps the only one within a 50-mile radius," he said.
