Sand shortage hits real estate, govt infra projects across state
1 2 Ranchi: The National Green Tribunal 's ( NGT ) ban on sand mining from June 10 to October 15 for monsoon has led to a sand crisis across the state, severely affecting construction work in both govt and private sectors. The restriction, aimed at curbing environmental degradation during the monsoon season, has led to an acute shortage of sand, causing prices to surge exorbitantly. With sand supply halted, ongoing infrastructure projects, including road development, housing schemes, and public utility construction, have either slowed down or come to a complete standstill. Private builders and contractors are also bearing the brunt of the shortage. Many real estate projects have been delayed, leading to cost overruns and growing frustration among investors and homebuyers alike. Sand mining from riverbeds stopped in Jharkhand on June 10 in accordance with the NGT order. A Ranchi-based contractor who builds buildings for state govt, Rohit Agarwal, claimed, "Sand shortage have forced work to come to a halt. Unavailability of sand is causing delays in construction which would eventually lead to delay in completion of projects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo A few projects are ongoing by some contractors who have their own sand stock otherwise a lot of projects are on halt." The president of the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Paresh Gattani, said, "Sand shortage across the state is creating major inconveniences. Price of sand has become exorbitantly high and businessmen are procuring sand from Bihar." Within the span of a month, rates of sand have increased at least Rs 10,000- 15,000 per truck. "Before the ban was, it was around Rs 40,000 for a truck, which has now become Rs 50,000- 55,000 a truck of sand from Bihar," said Vikash Kumar, a businessman. Monsoon delays laying of tertiary treated water pipelines in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: With the ongoing monsoon season, work on laying tertiary treated (TT) water pipelines in the city has been held up. Laying of TT lines requires road cuts at different locations but both the Chandigarh administration and the municipal corporation have stopped granting permission for road cuts during the season as a precautionary measure. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Consequently, work on TT lines will not be completed by the end of July, the deadline set by Chandigarh administration in a recent meeting. "Most of the areas identified for road cuts pass through key roads of the city like Uttar Marg, Dakshin Marg, roads passing through northern sectors, Manimajra, etc. The road cuts will be needed at around 50-60 locations, but work cannot be started at these places without permission," sources said. Since the status of TT lines and related aspects like functioning of the sewage treatment plant (STP) is under the direct monitoring of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), chief secretary, Chandigarh administration asked the MC to complete the work by the end of July. However, the civic body cannot proceed in the monsoon. The project of laying around 175 km of TT lines started last year and around 50 km of TT lines are yet to be laid. This is the second phase of laying the TT water lines. Planned with an expenditure of around Rs 77 crore, the project is expected to increase TT water supply to 20 MGD in the city. Financial allocation for the project was approved under the Atal Mission of Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)-2 of the central government. Therefore, the entire funding for this specific project of the city will be done by the central government from the special dedicated kitty. And so, the authority has been expanding the TT network on a large scale by covering all its 1,800 neighbourhood parks, big gardens, green belts, parks of govt areas, govt buildings, etc, and is encouraging private individuals to opt for this improved quality TT water.
