Former college football player Chandler Jones dies at age 33 after road accident
The report states Jones suffered blunt traumatic injuries while on the freeway in Los Angeles.
According to CNN affiliate KCAL, police say an investigation is underway after Jones was hit by a car at 2 a.m. on Sunday, before being pronounced dead at the scene.
CNN Sports has reached out to the California Highway Patrol for comment.
After starring at Bishop Montgomery High School, Jones enjoyed a record-breaking college career at San José State between 2010 and 2013. He finished with a program high of 248 receptions and 31 receiving touchdowns, before trying to forge a career in the NFL.
He made the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad in 2014, before moving to the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes.
After his playing career, Jones worked as a coach, notably back at San José State and with the Alouettes.
'Our thoughts are with Chandler's family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support,' said Danny Maciocia, general manager of the Alouettes, in a statement Monday.
Meanwhile, the San José State Spartans released a statement on social media saying that Jones would be 'forever in our hearts.'
University of Arizona head football coach Brent Brennan, who formerly was the head coach at San José State, also took to social media to pay tribute to Jones.
'My heart is broken at the news of losing this incredible person,' he said.

Feds charge Pat Tillman's brother with arson after San Jose post office fire
The brother of late NFL star and war hero Pat Tillman is facing a federal charge of malicious destruction by fire, less than two weeks after he rammed a car into a San Jose post office and set it on fire, prosecutors said Wednesday. Richard Tillman, 44, faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years, in addition to a $250,000 fine, if convicted, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California. The charge stemmed from an incident in the early hours of July 20 at the Almaden Valley U.S. Post Office, where Tillman allegedly set fire to the building, partially destroying it. Federal prosecutors said Tillman purchased 'instalogs' and lighter fluid and then drove to the post office at Crown Boulevard in San Jose. Tillman placed the instalogs throughout his car and poured lighter fluid in the car, prosecutors said, then he backed the car into the building's lobby and set it ablaze. He spray painted the words 'Viva La Me' on the outside of the building but was unable to finish the job due to the intense heat of the fire, prosecutors said. Tillman told law enforcement officers that he sparked the fire to send a message to the U.S. government and that he used his phone to livestream the destruction on YouTube. Tillman, who In 2015 wrote a children's book series focused on kindness and empathy, had documented his apparent unraveling on dozens of videos he posted to social media in recent months, according to a Chronicle report. His most recent video, which has since been deleted, showed him sitting in a parked car talking about the 'spiritual realm,' ascension and making the planet evolve, while referring to himself in the third person and laughing in between bizarre statements. 'I'm not going to harm anyone physically, so there's nothing to worry about,' Tillman said. 'You guys will find out what I'm laughing about one day.' Senate confirms Jan. 6 denier Joseph Kent to head counterterrorism center
The Republican-controlled Senate voted along sharply partisan lines Wednesday to confirm Joseph Kent as head of the National Counterterrorism Center, approving his nomination over objections from Democrats who cited his embrace of conspiracy theories and attempts to alter intelligence reports as disqualifying. Kent, a former Army Special Operations and CIA officer who has served as a top aide to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, was confirmed by a 52-44 vote to head the center, created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to analyze and integrate intelligence relating to transnational terrorism, including threats to U.S. interests at home and abroad. Republicans cited his combat experience and government posts as qualifications. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) noted that Kent's first wife, Shannon, a Navy cryptologist, was killed by a suicide bomber in northern Syria in 2019. Democrats warned that Kent's embrace of unsubstantiated theories, including that the FBI played a role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, and his past association with white-supremacist groups made him uniquely unqualified to run a key intelligence unit. The core principles of intelligence are 'objectivity, nonpartisanship and fidelity to fact,' said Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Virginia), the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee. 'Mr. Kent has shown time and again that he cannot meet that standard.' His past associations with far-right extremists also came under scrutiny during two failed bids for Congress. In 2021, Kent discussed social media tactics for his campaign with antisemite and white supremacist Nick Fuentes. Separately, Kent drew praise from Joey Gibson, who founded Patriot Prayer, a far-right group known for clashing with activists on the left. He later sought to distance himself from extremist groups. Kent, who was endorsed by Trump in both of his bids for Congress, has also repeated conspiracies that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump. He wrote about meeting Trump as he waited to receive his wife's body to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in a 2020 opinion piece for NBC News, saying that Trump's 'empathy and thoughtfulness on one of the worst days of my life won my gratitude.'
