KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) announced it is providing financing to the rooftop solar power regeneration business of Altervim, the renewable energy unit of Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group.
The banking group said it is providing Altervim its maiden green loan for the solar business, which is in line with the group's sustainability goals of driving energy transition across Asean.
In the initial phase of its expansion in Malaysia, Altervim will deliver installed solar capacity of up to 20MW with Lotus's Malaysia's 28 branches.
This is expected to generate 24.65 million kWh of clean energy per year and offset a total of 433,958 tonnes of CO2 emissions
throughout the lifecycle of the projects.
"We are proud to support Altervim's foray into Malaysia, while contributing to the government's energy transition agenda to
increasing the renewable energy mix.
"The financing facility to Altervim is structured according to Maybank's Sustainable Product Framework, and adds to the Bank's growing portfolio of sustainable finance," said Maybank global banking group CEO Datuk John Chong in a statement.
From 2021 to 1Q25, Maybank as a group across the region
mobilised RM125.46bil in sustainable finance, exceeding its RM80bil target by 2025.
Altervim chief financial officer Borvorn Pienpongpanich said Malaysia is one of its key growth markets, with the facility enabling it to expand faster, deliver real carbon savings and help businesses reduce their energy costs with green energy.

Indonesian rupiah, Thai baht lead Asia forex lower as US tariff deadline looms

SINGAPORE: Asian currencies weakened on Tuesday, led by the Thai baht and the Indonesian rupiah, as investors focused on upcoming US trade negotiations and the looming August 1 tariff deadline set by US President Donald Trump. Thailand expects to conclude trade talks with the United States, its largest export market, before the deadline and avoid tariffs as high as 36 per cent, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said, riding the momentum from Trump's deal with Europe over the weekend. The Thai baht weakened as much as 0.5 per cent to 32.51 per dollar, its biggest intraday decline since July 9, while Indonesia's rupiah fell 0.4 per cent to a one-month low of 16,400. Taiwan's dollar dropped more than 0.4 per cent to its lowest point since July 1, and currencies across the region declined, with investors pondering over the implications for growth and inflation on the global economy from the tariffs. Trump's trade deal with Europe initially lifted market sentiment, but investors quickly realised the terms largely favoured the United States. This reinforced dollar strength, adding pressure on regional currencies. Officials in Seoul are scrambling in an all-out push to clinch a trade deal ahead of the August 1 deadline to remove or reduce tariffs threatened by Trump against the country's key industrial exports to the United States. The urgency underscores a broader regional race to secure favourable terms after Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan already clinched trade agreements with Washington, creating a precedent for other Asian economies. Meanwhile, US and Chinese economic leaders held more than five hours of talks in Stockholm on Monday, working to resolve disputes fuelling the economic conflict between the world's two largest economies and extend their current truce by three months. Regional equities fell alongside currencies, with Taiwan's benchmark index slipping more than 1 per cent to a one-week low. Singapore and the Philippine markets dropped more than 0.5 per cent each, while Indonesian and South Korean shares bucked the trend, posting modest gains. Central bank meetings loom large for the remainder of the week, with the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan and the Monetary Authority of Singapore set to announce policy decisions this week. "With no policy changes expected from the BOJ, Fed, or MAS this week, EM Asian currencies are unlikely to see significant movement from these central bank meetings," said Chandresh Jain, rates strategist at BNP Paribas. "However, if MAS surprises by cutting the SGD NEER slope, it could initially drive USDSGD (the US Dollar-Singapore Dollar pair) higher."

Malaysia praised for brokering Thai-Cambodia ceasefire by MCBA

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-Cambodia Business Association (MCBA) has commended Malaysia's leadership role in brokering an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, following a special meeting held in Putrajaya yesterday. MCBA founding president Datuk Seri Ricky Yaw praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his proactive diplomacy, noting that MCBA, as a platform dedicated to regional economic cooperation, welcomes Malaysia's leadership in his capacity as ASEAN Chair. He said Anwar's efforts had brought the leaders of both countries to Kuala Lumpur for urgent dialogue in response to escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. 'This ceasefire is a critical step toward restoring peace and regional stability. We extend our highest respect to Malaysia for the leadership demonstrated in facilitating this breakthrough. 'At the same time, we also pay high tribute to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for their political foresight and courage in making responsible decisions that balance national interest with regional peace,' he said in a statement. He added that MCBA, as a regional business association promoting peace, trade, and investment, firmly believes that economic growth must be grounded in mutual respect, regional cooperation, and long-term stability. 'We urge all ASEAN member states to continue supporting diplomatic efforts and trust-building mechanisms to prevent further escalation and strengthen mutual understanding. Peace is always the foundation of prosperity,' he added. Yaw added that MCBA remains committed to working closely with stakeholders in Cambodia, Thailand, and across the ASEAN region to promote peaceful coexistence and economic resilience. Yesterday, Hun Manet and Wechayachai agreed to an 'immediate and unconditional ceasefire' over the ongoing border dispute, following a special meeting brokered by Anwar at the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister, the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic tensions over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions have been simmering since May 28, following a skirmish between troops near the disputed Preah Vihear area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. - Bernama

Thai and Cambodia border calm ahead of military commanders meeting

A view shows an empty street of Samraong, the capital of Oddar Meanchey province, about 20 km (12 miles) from the border, from where people evacuated during ceasefire talks in Malaysia, as the deadly border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia extended to a fifth day, Cambodia, July 28, 2025. REUTERS/Chantha Lach BANGKOK (Reuters) -The Thailand-Cambodia border, where fighting has raged since last week, is now calm following a ceasefire deal and military commanders from both sides are set to meet for talks on Tuesday, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said. Phumtham and his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet, met in Malaysia on Monday and agreed to halt their deadliest conflict in more than a decade following five days of intense fighting that displaced over 300,000 people and killed at least 38 people, mostly civilians. The Thai army said in a statement there had been attacks by Cambodian troops in at least five locations early on Tuesday, violating the ceasefire that had come into effect from midnight, and Thailand's military had retaliated proportionately. Phumtham played down the clashes, and said he had spoken with Cambodia's defence minister ahead of the talks between military commanders, which are scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. local time (0300 GMT). "There is no escalation," Phumtham told reporters. "Right now things are calm." Maly Socheata, a spokesperson for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said in a briefing on Tuesday that there had been no continued fighting along the border. Monday's peace talks came after a sustained push by Malaysian Premier Anwar Ibrahim and U.S. President Donald Trump, with the latter warning Thai and Cambodian leaders that trade negotiations would not progress if fighting continued. Thailand and Cambodia face a tariff of 36% on their goods in the U.S., their biggest export market, unless a reduction can be negotiated. After the ceasefire deal was reached, Trump said he had spoken to both leaders and had instructed his trade team to restart tariff talks. The Southeast Asian neighbours have wrangled for decades over their disputed frontier and have been on a conflict footing since the killing of a Cambodian soldier in a skirmish late in May, which led to a troop buildup on both sides and a full-blown diplomatic crisis.
