BLOGGING THE VIEW: Fierce contenders and fashion at this year's Durban July
The thundering hooves, roaring crowds, and array of high fashion will once again take over Durban's Greyville Racecourse this Saturday, 5 July, for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
With a R5-million purse, the field is packed with elite thoroughbreds, with this year's race promising to be one for the history books.
1. The favourite
Topping the charts in this year's race is Eight of Eighteen, the three-year-old colt from trainer Justin Snaith's stable and ridden by champion jockey Richard Fourie.
Coming in at 14/10 odds, this horse has been virtually unstoppable in 2025, boasting wins at the Cape Town Met, the SplashOut Cape Derby, and the Daily News 2000.
His entry into the Durban July was the subject of speculation, with some concern over the hefty 57kg weight, the heaviest for a three-year-old since Abashiri in 2016. But with a decent draw of 11 and momentum like no other, Eight of Eighteen is primed to make history as the first three-year-old to win both the Cape Town Met and the Durban July in the same year.
2. The challenger
Last year's winner, Oriental Charm, is not backing down. Trained by James Crawford and piloted by JP van der Merwe, he's drawn pole position (Gate 1) with 11/2 odds. While he finished seventh in the King's Plate earlier this year, he bounced back with solid second-place finishes in both the Cape Town Met and the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge.
3. Rising star
Coming in at 7/1 odds, Immediate Edge – who is trained by Mike and Mathew de Kock – is a serious contender. With four wins from six starts and carrying a light 53kg, the three-year-old colt will be ridden by Callan Murray. However, he's untested at sea level, with all victories coming at Turffontein, adding a layer of mystery to his race-day prospects.
4. Other horses to watch
· See It Again: Trained by Michael Roberts and racing in the same colours as Eight of Eighteen, he's making his third appearance, following a second-place in 2023 and an unlucky fifth in 2024
· The Real Prince: With a win at the Jet Master Stakes and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, this horse drew gate five and is expected to show up strong
· Atticus Finch: Trained by Alec Laird and winner of the Gr1 Betway Summer Cup, he enters from gate four and will be one to watch
· Confederate: A promising entry for trainer Fabian Habib, this gelding has never placed lower than second and will be ridden by Warren Kennedy
· Rainbow Lorikeet: The only filly in the race, this classy contender from Candice Bass Robinson's stable drew well at gate seven
5. Fashion from the 'Marvels of Mzansi'
While the turf sets the stage for equine excellence, the Hollywoodbets Durban July is also the runway for the fashion elite. This year's theme, 'Marvels of Mzansi' will ignite creative brilliance. Audiences can look out for:
· Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars
· Top 10 Young Designer Award finalists
· Invited designers, including crowd favourite Khosi Nkosi
· Gateway's heavyweights like Boss, Fabiani, Forever New, and YDE
If you can't make it to Greyville, SuperSport on DStv offers a front-row seat to all the action, from the heart-racing finishes to the head-turning outfits.

Michael Owen's grand gallop: sharing his anticipation for the Hollywoodbets Durban July
Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. Image: Leon Lestrade/ Independent Newspapers Former football superstar Michael Owen is in South Africa, embracing the vibrant atmosphere of his inaugural Hollywoodbets Durban July. The ex-Liverpool striker is eager to immerse himself in South Africa's most anticipated horse-racing event, although he admits he still hasn't decided what to wear for the occasion. "Independent Media Lifestyle" caught up with the charismatic SunBet ambassador at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where he expressed his excitement about experiencing the annual racing spectacle that draws attention from across the region. "The first thing I've noticed about the city is that it's very similar to the UK in terms of lots of greenery, trees and land, it was nice to see. We've come in winter so it's a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be, I only brought one top!" Despite the chill, Owen's enthusiasm was unmistakable, especially as he looked forward to the main event. "I'm looking forward to more of the city, and the Durban July is going to be the biggest attraction for me, so I can't wait to see that tomorrow as well." "We've already been to various places. We did an event last night, we've got different dinners, we've got meet and greets with fans, we went to see the training centre (Summerveld Horseracing Clubhouse) this morning, which was exciting, so there are a few things on the agenda over the next few days." Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. He also signed autographs at a meet-and-greet with fans. Image: Leon Lestrade / Independent Newspapers While fashion often takes centre stage at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Owen appears more keen to appreciate the full experience. "I'm not really a fashionista, I'm looking forward to the whole day. I love horses and I'm looking forward to seeing the big race, but I like to see everything, and see people enjoying themselves, I may possibly get down with the locals. "That's the good thing about horse racing, there is something in it for everybody, whether you're into fashion or horses, competition or gambling. It's a family event so I'm looking forward to the whole day." His insights into the racing field are great, especially as he brings his perspective from a recent stint at the prestigious Royal Ascot in the UK. "I listened intensely last night, and Eight On Eighteen is the favourite, sounds like everybody is keen on it. I actually like the look of the No.1 horse, Oriental Charm, who won it last year, drawn well, it's an older horse so more robust, I guess, but I'm guessing." "I'm interested in seeing what the differences are. I've just come off the back of doing five days of Royal Ascot, which is our showpiece in the UK. We've got a lot of festivals, but I think Royal Ascot is the one we're most proud of and I'm told that the Durban July is the big one over here that excites the nation. "I've seen some of the best horse racing events in the world, and obviously this will be different, but it will be amazing in your own way, which is the beauty of going to different countries and seeing how each country does it." "Lots of people will be there, the racing is great and I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great. There'll be the fashion, people and the excitement and the social environment so looking forward to seeing it.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: meet the first black horse racing announcer in isiZulu on TV
When it comes to South Africa's black pioneers, the name Sanele Mchunu now stands alongside the greats from Comrades Marathon champion Sam Tshabalala, to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, and music star Khaya Mthethwa. Hailing from Mpophomeni in Howick, Mchunu has carved out his own place in history as the first black person to announce horse races in isiZulu on national television. The 41-year-old, who now lives in KwaNyuswa near Pinetown, was hired by Race Coast and on Saturday July 5 takes to the mic at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July, a moment that marks both personal triumph and a step forward for representation in the horse racing industry. Speaking to Isolezwe, Mchunu reflected on the opportunity that came his way in 2023, when Hollywoodbets sought to revitalise horse racing by making it more accessible to a broader audience. 'I was challenged to announce the races in isiZulu something I'd never even dreamed of,' he said. 'But I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.' Since then, Mchunu has become a regular voice in the sport and hopes his role will open doors for others. 'Even after Smanga Khumalo's historic Durban July win, there's still only one Black horse trainer in the country,' he said. 'This is an industry with huge employment potential, and it's time more Black South Africans got involved - not just at major events like the Durban July, but throughout the year.' Mchunu's journey began in the classrooms of KwaMqhathi Primary in KwaMpande, before moving to KwaNyuswa's St Lawrence Primary and later completing matric at Khabazela High School in Embo. He went on to study Video Technology at what is now the Durban University of Technology. His professional media career began in 2006 as a video editor at the SABC, followed by stints at SuperSport TV and, eventually, Gallop TV under where he now works as a studio producer. While he hasn't yet married, Mchunu is a proud father of three and continues to make strides, not only for himself, but for the next generation of broadcasters, sports enthusiasts, and horse racing professionals.

Jockey Grant van Niekerk seizes his shot at Durban July glory after late scratching
JOCKEY Grant van Niekerk relishing the chance to ride a less fancied Litigation in the Durban July main race. | Pexels. In a twist of fate that seems almost scripted, jockey Grant van Niekerk finds himself in the spotlight as he celebrates his 34th birthday and a chance at victory in this year's Hollywoodbets Durban July. Just days before the prestigious event, van Niekerk had lamented the fact that he did not have a ride after the announcement of the 18-horse field for the iconic race. His aspirations, however, were reignited when disappointment struck for another competitor. The ride on 'See it Again', trained by Michael Roberts, was withdrawn from the field due to an abnormal blood count, marking a significant blow to Roberts, who described the situation as a "bitter pill to swallow". This unexpected vacancy provided van Niekerk with an opportunity that few could have foreseen. He had previously expressed reluctance to benefit from another's misfortune, stating, "I did not wish to benefit from somebody else's disappointment," upon being lined up to ride one of the reserves. Just as he expressed those sentiments, the announcement came through that he had been booked to ride the first reserve, 'Litigation', trained by Sean Tarry. The timing could not be more serendipitous for van Niekerk, who now has a golden chance to add a Durban July victory to his impressive record. Despite three bittersweet second-place Durban July finishes since 2012, the determined Van Niekerk believes that this year, aboard his steed 'Litigation', he has a long shot at glory. 'It's a wonderful thing to be part of the Durban July field again,' Van Niekerk told Independent Media on Friday. 'It's come out of the blue, and for a change, I'm not riding one of the fancied horses.' His admission hints at a refreshing shift in perspective. Rather than bearing the weight of expectation from pundits and fans alike, Van Niekerk is embracing the opportunity of riding a less popular choice, contingent on the hope that a surprise outcome might await. In the field for the 129th edition of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, there are plenty of big names set to face the starter. Defending champion Oriental Charm, the Brett Crawford-trained four-year-old, returns to the site of last year's triumph beneath JP van der Merwe. Justin Snaith's superstar three-year-old Eight on Eighteen is the favourite and the biggest threat to Oriental Charm's crown. He is the red-hot favourite to lift the 2025 crown. The three-year-old superstar is a multiple Grade 1 winner. He has earned over R6 million in career stakes. He does have to contend with 57kgs. He is drawn in the middle of the field, and plenty can go wrong. However, with Richard Fourie in the irons, he has every chance of winning KZN's premier race. He cruised home in the Daily News 2000 by just under four lengths in his final prep run for this race and looks to have every chance.
