Manipur's Kuki body bars MLAs from forming new state government

India Today2 days ago
In a major political statement, several influential Kuki-Zo civil and community organisations have passed a resolution barring all Kuki-Zo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from participating in the formation of any new government in Manipur, whenever it is formed. This comes amid tensions in the northeastern state. The state has been under President's Rule since February 13 this year, with the Centre setting a target of December 2025 for the complete resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).advertisementThe resolution was adopted at a joint meeting held on Thursday at the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) Secretariat in Bijang, Churachandpur.
The session was attended by top representatives from Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), its federating bodies such as the Kuki Students' Organisation-General Headquarters (KSO-GHQ), Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi-GHQ, Kuki Christian Leaders' Forum (KCLF), Kuki Women's Union-GHQ, Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights-GHQ, Kuki Chiefs' Association-Manipur (KCA-M), along with heads of departments and district units.Following detailed deliberations, the gathering unanimously decided that no Kuki-Zo MLA shall "participate or take part in any manner in the formation of a new popular government in the state of Manipur".The resolution declared that the Kuki-Zo people would not compromise on their ancestral land, identity, culture, or political and economic rights. The joint statement described the decision as reflective of the "collective political will and aspiration of the Kuki-Zo people" and stated that it is binding on all representatives and community organisations. It also urged strict adherence to the resolution "in letter and spirit".The announcement comes at a time when ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have been advocating for a separate administration, calling for Union Territory status amid the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023. The conflict has led to over 250 deaths and the displacement of more than 60,000 people.Meanwhile, the state has witnessed repeated incidents of arms looting. Over 6,000 weapons were reportedly stolen from government armories since the unrest began.Authorities have launched a series of crackdowns to recover illegal weapons. On February 27, 307 weapons were recovered, including 246 deposited by the Meitei group Arambai Tengol. Another operation on June 14 led to the seizure of 328 weapons and 10,600 rounds of ammunition. The most recent crackdown occurred on July 4, when 203 firearms were recovered across multiple districts in one of the largest single-day recoveries in Manipur's history.- EndsMust Watch

Govt to hold mega recruitment drive, says CM Fadnavis

The Maharashtra government is gearing up to launch a mega recruitment drive across various departments, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the state Legislative Assembly on Monday. 'This mega bharti (mega recruitment) will be initiated once a clear picture of the vacant posts emerges following a 150-day target programme assigned to all departments,' he said. Responding to a 'calling-attention notice' raised by MLA Bhimrao Keram regarding vacant posts in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category, Fadnavis said, 'We had earlier announced the recruitment of 75,000 posts. So far, over one lakh positions have been filled. The government will not hold back when it comes to recruitment.' The CM outlined key goals under the 150-day programme — restructuring departmental frameworks, updating recruitment rules, ensuring 100% compassionate appointments, and identifying clear vacancies. Based on these, a mega recruitment will be planned, he said. Fadnavis also revealed that as many as 6,860 posts reserved for Scheduled Tribes are currently held by individuals who have not submitted valid caste certificates, even after serving for 20 years or more. 'In a humanitarian approach, the government has treated these posts as supernumerary, meaning these employees will continue in their positions but will not be eligible for promotions. After they retire, these posts will be considered vacant and can be filled as per reservation norms,' he said. Out of these, 1,343 posts have already been filled with eligible ST candidates, and the process is underway to fill the rest. The government is also working to simplify and digitise the caste verification process using blockchain-based systems, aiming to bring speed and transparency. In a related development, Fadnavis announced that the Supreme Court has lifted the stay on inheriting sanitation jobs. Recruitment for such posts will now proceed based on the recommendations of the Lad–Page Committee. 'Recruitment for ST-reserved posts in the Public Works Department will also be taken up shortly. A special secretarial task force will be constituted to expedite and streamline the caste certificate verification process,' the CM added.

Manipur moving toward peace, signs of normalcy visible: RSS

'But definitely compared to last year, normalcy has started returning to the state. The start of normalcy (peace) has begun. And slowly, the dialogue that is taking place between the two communities (Meitei and Kuki)… (constructive) paths will emerge from this,' Ambekar said during the press conference while describing how RSS workers were functioning on the ground in the state. Responding to a question on the state-of-affairs in the state, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh of the RSS Sunil Ambekar said when a situation deteriorates somewhere things do not change overnight. New Delhi: Amidst ongoing concerns over the current situation in Manipur, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Monday said the state is witnessing normalcy returning gradually. Speaking to ThePrint later in the day, Ambekar said that since the beginning, RSS workers have been carrying out social work for the community while engaging in a dialogue with both sides. 'Sangh functionaries have been engaged in social work as well as being in a dialogue (samvad) as far as Manipur is concerned and things have improved in the past few months,' he added. Speaking to ThePrint, an RSS functionary said the organisation has been carrying out several outreach initiatives to engage diverse sections of society. Manipur witnessed prolonged unrest following the outbreak of violence in May 2023. The ethnic conflict has claimed over 200 lives and displaced over 60,000 people. It has led to a complete segregation of the two main communities in the state—predominantly the Meiteis and the Kukis. While the Kukis have fled the Imphal Valley, where the Meiteis live, the latter have left their homes and fled from the hills, where the Kukis live. The deteriorating law and order situation led the Centre to impose President's Rule in February this year. The state assembly, though, was not dissolved but put in suspended animation for 6 months. The President's Rule remains in effect till 12 August. If a government is not installed by then, the Centre can extend it for a maximum of 3 years with parliamentary approvals every 6 months. Highlighting the plan and programmes for the centenary year of the RSS, Ambekar said such issues were discussed in the 'Pranth Pracharak' meeting held from 4 to 6 July. 'During the centenary year, Hindu conferences will be organised at the mandal level in rural areas and the colony level in urban areas with the participation of all sections of the society. At present, there are 58,964 mandals and 44,055 colonies in the country as per the Sangh Rakhshan. In Hindu conferences, topics like festivals of the society, social unity and harmony, and Panch-Parivartan will be discussed,' Ambekar said. Similarly, social harmony meetings will be organised in 11,360 blocks/cities to promote harmony in the society. 'Major citizen seminars will be organised in 924 districts of the country. Topics like India's idea, India's pride, India's self, etc., will be discussed in the seminars,' he added. Normalcy is returning in Manipur, says Sunil Ambekar

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh said on Monday (July 7, 2025) that normalcy was returning to Manipur as the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have begun communicating. Addressing the media in Delhi, the RSS's national publicity in-charge Mr. Ambekar said it took a lot of time for the situation to become normal when such disturbances erupt in any region. 'But compared with last year, normalcy has definitely started returning to the State. This happens due to the dialogue between the two communities,' said Mr Ambekar. Emphasising how RSS workers tirelessly worked in riot-hit areas of Manipur, Mr. Ambekar said the Sangh had also attempted to speak with both groups and owing to this, positive changes can be seen on the ground. Speaking on the issues discussed over the three days of the 'Prant Pracharak' (regional heads) meeting that concluded in Delhi on July 6, Mr. Ambekar said senior organisation members shared recent developments in their areas and burning issues of the country were discussed. 'Our volunteers from bordering States shared their experience and the present condition of their region. The Pracharaks also shared the public's opinion on Operation Sindoor and other recent events of national importance,' he said. Sharing the Sangh's plan to mark its centenary, Mr. Ambekar said that the organisation was looking to reach out to every village and every house. 'As part of our centenary year, we will be organising Hindu Sammelans [meetings] in 58,964 mandals and 44,055 bastis across the country. There will be discussion on social festivals, social unity and harmony, and Panch Parivartan (five transformations). Similarly, Samajik Sadbhav Baithaks [Social harmony meetings] will be organised in 11,360 blocks and towns to promote social harmony in the society,' Mr Ambekar informed. He also shared the RSS's plans for door-to-door outreach and said efforts will be made to reach maximum number of houses in every village. The main goal in the RSS's centenary year is inclusive outreach across professions, geographies, and communities to foster holistic social integration, Mr. Ambekar remarked.
