Manipur Guv reviews conditions of internally displaced persons in relief camps
Guwahati: Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla took a comprehensive review meeting of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in various relief camps in the State. In a presentation held on Monday at the conference hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, Governor along with Chief Secretary, DC Imphal West and senior officials, discussed various initiatives and activities being taken up for the IDP by the State administration. During the presentation, the Governor was briefed about the management of IDPs by using a dedicated IDPs portal. The discussions highlighted the government's commitment for enhancing coordination and delivering public services effectively. Early this month Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh said that the government is working towards resettling all Internally Displaced Persons by December 2025—either in their original homes or in government-constructed temporary housing. All the camps will be closed by December. The Chief Secretary had stated the relocation will take place in three phases—July, October, and December. 'First is those who want to immediately go back by July and a good number have started going back. The IDPs number was 62,000 in the beginning, now it is 57,000.' He said, ' The first round will go back by July, second by October and third by December. There are around 8000 houses which were completely destroyed and for this government will provide around Rs 1.3 lakh plus 1.73 lakhs so that they can rebuild their houses.' He added that second is around 7000 houses which were abandoned however not destroyed but dilapidated in two years. Some kind of money help will be extended to them. Around 8000 people who have come from Moreh, Kangpokpi will be allowed to stay in the prefabricated houses, we are building over a thousand more prefabricated houses. All the camps will be closed by December.' In Manipur, at least 258 people have been killed and over a thousand people injured in the ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the non-tribal Meitei people since May 3, 2023. The ethnic violence between the non-tribals Meiteis and tribal Kuki-Zo broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, 2023, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Churachandpur Meitei committee ends protest after govt's assurance to IDPs
Imphal: The Churchandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC) has officially withdrawn its indefinite agitation seeking urgent relief for the suffering faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), following govt's assurance to fulfil three out of six demands submitted in a memorandum to the governor and concerned authorities, reports Ngathingkhui Jagoi. The state govt has ensured that all IDPs currently residing in relief camps will be shifted to prefabricated houses within the next two months. A separate administrative unit will also be established at the deputy commissioner's office to address IDP-related documentation and other matters, he said. The CMUC acknowledged the govt's positive response and expressed hope for timely implementation of the assurances.

Manipur's Kuki body bars MLAs from forming new state government
In a major political statement, several influential Kuki-Zo civil and community organisations have passed a resolution barring all Kuki-Zo Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from participating in the formation of any new government in Manipur, whenever it is comes amid tensions in the northeastern state. The session was attended by top representatives from Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), its federating bodies such as the Kuki Students' Organisation-General Headquarters (KSO-GHQ), Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi-GHQ, Kuki Christian Leaders' Forum (KCLF), Kuki Women's Union-GHQ, Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights-GHQ, Kuki Chiefs' Association-Manipur (KCA-M), along with heads of departments and district detailed deliberations, the gathering unanimously decided that no Kuki-Zo MLA shall "participate or take part in any manner in the formation of a new popular government in the state of Manipur".The resolution declared that the Kuki-Zo people would not compromise on their ancestral land, identity, culture, or political and economic joint statement described the decision as reflective of the "collective political will and aspiration of the Kuki-Zo people" and stated that it is binding on all representatives and community organisations. It also urged strict adherence to the resolution "in letter and spirit".The announcement comes at a time when ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have been advocating for a separate administration, calling for Union Territory status amid the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023. The conflict has led to over 250 deaths and the displacement of more than 60,000 the state has witnessed repeated incidents of arms looting. Over 6,000 weapons were reportedly stolen from government armories since the unrest have launched a series of crackdowns to recover illegal weapons. On February 27, 307 weapons were recovered, including 246 deposited by the Meitei group Arambai Tengol. Another operation on June 14 led to the seizure of 328 weapons and 10,600 rounds of ammunition. Manipur to shut relief camps by December as state seeks to restore normalcy

He noted a positive shift in ground realities, with farmers from both affected communities now cultivating their fields in peace and even sharing water resources.'There is a visible improvement. I appeal to all Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from both sides to maintain calm and cooperation.
