1.3 million North Carolinians to travel for Memorial Day, expected to break 20-year record, AAA reports

Yahoo15-05-2025
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – It's set to be another record-breaking year for Memorial Day travel in the Carolinas.
AAA predicts 1.3 million North Carolinians will travel at least 50 miles for Memorial Day this year, which marks an increase of nearly 50,000 compared to 2024.
Nationwide, 45.1 million people are estimated to spend time away from home for the holiday weekend, and that's 1.4 million more domestic travelers than last year, according to AAA. This number would set a new Memorial Day weekend record that dates back to 2005, with 44 million people.
Out of the 1.3 million projected travelers from North Carolina, 1.18 million are expected to drive, while over 114,000 will fly for the holiday, AAA reports.
'Despite economic uncertainty and global challenges, travel remains a priority for Americans, with millions eager to make memories with a Memorial Day getaway,' said Debbie Haas, the vice president of travel for AAA. 'Whether travelers are looking for a quick getaway or an extended vacation, there are budget-friendly options for every plan. From a short beach retreat to an extended cruise, working with a travel advisor can help uncover exclusive discounts and create a vacation that best meets your interests and needs.'
In 2025, 87% of Memorial Day travelers nationally will take a road trip, and fortunately for drivers, a trip to the gas pump should be lower than last year, when the U.S. average of regular was $3.59 per gallon and $3.33 per gallon in North Carolina, according to AAA.
Experts said gas prices have avoided the usual seasonal spikes so far this spring, primarily due to lower crude oil costs.
'As summer unofficially begins and travel demand picks up, there's a chance that pump prices will edge upward,' said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson for AAA in the Carolinas. 'Historically, gas prices tend to peak in the spring or summer before gradually easing as schools reopen in the fall.'
Meanwhile, airports are bracing for another busy holiday weekend, with AAA predicting 3.61 million will take to the skies, an almost 2% increase from 2024 when 3.55 million air passengers.
AAA reports this Memorial Day weekend isn't expected to set an air travel record, but this year's numbers are slated to exceed pre-pandemic levels by 12%.

Analysts reboot Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines stock price targets on strong value

All ashore who's going ashore! The travel industry has been on the upswing since the dark days of the Covid-19 pandemic and that trend seems poised to continue. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter A recent Deloitte survey found that more travelers planned to raise their holiday travel budgets from the prior-year level. And among those, 40% said they would do so because "travel has become more important to me since the pandemic." The report said affordability was often the biggest barrier to travel, noting that "either a hit to consumer confidence or persistent high prices could challenge travel demand in the coming year." About one in five Americans surveyed said they had opted out of a trip they wanted to take due to the high cost of flights or lodging, Deloitte said. The report also warned of the Trump administration's tariffs and deportations of undocumented workers, which could result in staffing shortages. The cruise industry has been growing steadily, according to Cruise Lines International Association's state-of-the-industry report, which was issued in May. Image source: Carnival Cruise Line Bud Darr, the association's president and CEO, said in a statement that cruising "continues to be one of the most dynamic and resilient sectors in tourism, growing in line with strong demand for cruise holidays, particularly among younger generations and new-to-cruise travelers." Cruise travel earns higher satisfaction ratings compared with other holiday choices, the report said. That's shown in repeat factors – 25% of repeat cruisers sail two or more times per year; 14% cruise twice a year; and 11% take three to five cruises a year. More Economic Analysis: GOP plan to remove Fed Chair Powell escalatesFederal Reserve official gives green light to July rate cutTrump deflects reports on firing Fed Chair Powell 'soon'Former Federal Reserve official sends bold message on 'regime change' Expedition and exploration cruises are the fastest-growing segments of cruise, with 22% more passengers choosing these voyages in 2024 over 2023. Forty-two million people - roughly the population of France - are forecast to sail in 2028, up 21% from 34.6 million last year. And the report said cruising has plenty of room for growth, since it is currently only 2.7% of the international travel and tourism sector. Several investment firms have been reviewing the cruise industry and issued research reports on some of the top companies. TD Cowen initiated coverage of both Carnival (CCL) with a buy rating and $36 price target and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH) , which got a buy rating and $31 target. Carnival shares are up 20% this year and up 62% from a year ago, while Norwegian stock has slipped nearly 10% in 2025 and are up 18% from a year ago. The investment firm also initiated coverage of Royal Caribbean (RCL) with a buy rating and $405 price target. The company's shares are up 51% this year and have more than doubled (up 107%) from a year ago. TD Cowen's analysts called the cruise lines "underappreciated" share gainers in the travel space, according to The Fly. The cruise names offer a strong value proposition, which will drive long-term share gains, the firm said. TD estimates annual revenue growth of 7% for the industry through 2029. It views Carnival as an industry leader with an opportunity to widen profit margins. Citi raised its price target on Carnival to $37 from $30 and affirmed a buy rating on the shares. It lifted its target on Norwegian to $30 from $25 and maintained a buy rating. The investment firm says "better-than-ever" demand and lower-than-historical supply growth are setting up a favorable pricing environment that could last much longer than investors expect. Citi says recent data show improving trends in May through July. The firm replaced Royal Caribbean with Carnival on its Focus List. Related: Cruise lines, Las Vegas Strip gamblers get good IRS news Truist analyst C. Patrick Scholes downgraded Royal Caribbean to hold from buy with a price target of $337, up from $275. Scholes said that he has observed a bounce-back in bookings since April's pullback. But when he averages March-through-early-July's bookings compared with a year earlier, the demand pace is up only low-to-mid-single digits percent, off from the high-teens monthly pace that 2024 averaged, the analyst said. Norwegian Cruise Line is scheduled to report second-quarter results July 31, while Royal Caribbean is slated to report July 29. For the fiscal first half ended May 31, Carnival swung to net income of 37 cents a share from a loss of a dime a share in the year-earlier half. Revenue rose 8.5% to $12.14 billion. U.S. Passport Drops 2 Places To No. 10 In World's Most Powerful List

Topline The United States blue book continues its decade-long slide to the 10th spot on the Henley Passport Index, a ranking of the world's passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The U.S. blue book is tied for No. 10 in a new ranking of the world's most powerful passports—a ... More continuation of its slide from No. 1 in 2014. getty Key Facts Americans can travel visa-free to 182 countries around the world—four fewer than one year ago, when the U.S. was ranked No. 8. In January 2025, the U.S. dropped one spot to No. 9. Americans can access 11 fewer countries visa-free than holders of the No. 1 passport, Singapore. A decade ago, in 2014, the U.S. jointly held the No. 1 position with the United Kingdom, which has slid to No. 6 in the 2025 ranking. 'Notably, the U.S. is now on the brink of exiting the Top 10 altogether for the first time in the index's 20-year history,' Henley & Partners noted in a statement. What Makes One Passport More Powerful Than Another? Since 2006, Henley & Partners has monitored which of the world's passports deliver the most and least global mobility, based on exclusive data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Global mobility is a key measure of soft power for a nation's citizens when they go abroad. Citizens of Singapore—the No. 1 passport in the ranking—enjoy access to 193 travel destinations out of 227 around the world visa-free. The second most powerful passports in the world are Japan and South Korea, which each provides access to 190 destinations without a visa. A U.S. passport gives holders access to 182 destinations visa-free—putting the blue book on equal standing with Iceland and Lithuania. 'Your passport is no longer just a travel document—it's a reflection of your country's diplomatic influence and international relationships,' Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners said in a statement. Why Has The U.s. Passport Fallen In The Power Rankings? The United States is held back by its lack of reciprocity, according to how Henley & Partners calculates its ranking. While American passport holders can access 182 out of 227 destinations visa-free, the U.S. itself allows only 46 other nationalities to pass through its borders visa-free, putting it way down the Henley Openness Index in 80th place (compared to 10th place on the Henley Passport Index), barely outpacing Iraq. Which Passports Have Made The Biggest Power Gains So Far In 2025? Two Asian countries are the ranking's biggest movers and shakers since January. India jumped eight spots in six months, from No. 85 to No. 77, after adding two destinations and bringing its visa-free tally to 59. Over the same period, Saudi Arabia's citizens gained visa-free access to four countries, bringing its total to 91 countries, which lifts the kingdom four places to No. 54. Which Passports Have Gained The Most Power Over The Past Decade? Taking a longer view, two other Asian countries stand out as winners in the ranking since 2015. The United Arab Emirates shot up 34 places over the last 10 years from No. 42 to No. 8. Another notable climber is China, also rising 34 places from No. 94 to No. 60 since 2015, which Henley & Partners characterizes as 'particularly impressive considering that, unlike other top risers, China has not yet gained visa-free access to Europe's Schengen Area.' The report attributes China's rise to its significant move towards greater openness, with the country granting visa-free access to over a dozen new passports since January. In 2025, passport holders from 75 nations have visa-free entry to China, a remarkable shift from fewer than 20 countries just five years ago. Here Are The Top 10 Most Powerful Passports As ranked by the Henley Passport Index (countries accessible visa-free): Singapore (193) Japan, South Korea (190) Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Span (189) Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden (188) Greece, New Zealand, Switzerland (187) United Kingdom (186) Australia, Czechia, Hungary, Malta, Poland (185) Canada, Estonia, U.A.E. (184) Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia (183) Iceland, Lithuania, U.S. (182) Crucial Quote 'Americans are now leading the demand worldwide for alternative residence and citizenship options'… as the U.S. adopts 'increasingly inward-looking policies,' Steffen noted in a statement. It's official: 2031 Ryder Cup returning to Spain, to be held at Camiral near Barcelona

Many have wondered when the Ryder Cup would return to Spain after a thrilling match at Valderrama in 1997. We now have the official answer. It was officially announced on Tuesday that the 2031 Ryder Cup will be contested at Camiral in Costa Brava, outside of Barcelona. Spain will become the first country in continental Europe to host more than one Ryder Cup. Golfweek had previously reported (via other sources) that this would likely be the venue. Legendary Spaniard Seve Ballesteros captained the European squad to a 141⁄2 to 131⁄2 victory at Valderrama, with the Americans falling one point short of a comeback in Sunday Singles after trailing by five points coming into the final day. 'Today's announcement not only recognises Camiral as one of Europe's leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup," Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive of the European Tour Group, said in a release. 'The Ryder Cup has grown significantly since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is one of the world's leading sporting events, which brings significant economic benefits and global exposure to a host region and country, so we could not be happier to be taking it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time, and to Spain for the second time." Camiral, formerly known as PGA Catalunya, is ranked as Spain's top golf and wellness resort. It opened in 1999 and has hosted the DP World Tour's Open de España on three occasions, in 2000, 2009 and 2014, and the Catalunya Championship in 2022, as well as the Final Stage of the DP World Tour's Qualifying School for nine consecutive years from 2008-16. Future Ryder Cup venues 2025: Bethpage Black 2027: Adare Manor 2029: Hazeltine National 2031: Camiral 2033: Olympic Club
