Tim Henman uses his BBC slot to back controversial Wimbledon expansion project
The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has sought planning permission to treble the size of the 42-acre site to include a new 8,000-seat stadium and 38 new grass courts on 73 acres of the former golf course that it has bought across the road.
Local residents have lodged a judicial review challenge to the decision by the Greater London Authority (GLA) to approve the planning application, which will be heard in the High Court this week.
On Friday, while commenting on British player Cameron Norrie 's victory over Mattia Bellucci, Mr Henman - a four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist who sits on the club's board - said when the camera shot to an aerial view of the site: 'Those drone shots as we've seen through the tournament give a great view of the land around and hopefully what might be developed in the future'.
In response, a spokesman for the Save Wimbledon Park group (SWP) said: 'Yes, it is a glorious view and SWP are campaigning to keep it that way, without the 8000 seat stadium, the 38 extra tennis courts and the miles of concrete walkways and maintenance hubs that AELTC wish to impose on this grassland.
'We also want to keep those glorious trees whose existence is threatened by AELTC's plans to turn Wimbledon Park into an industrial tennis complex.'
Last week, the Mail on Sunday revealed that seven-times champion Novak Djokovic had criticised residents who objected to the expansion project.
He said Wimbledon is a 'special place', but delivering on the expansion will make it 'truly outstanding'.
Sally Bolton, chief executive of the AELTC, said the club 'remain confident' that the development will be allowed.
She added that the judicial review was of the GLA's decision, rather than the club's, which she described as a 'very interested party'.
Backers of the proposals say that they would 'deliver one of the greatest sporting transformations for London since 2012' and were 'crucial to ensuring Wimbledon remains at the pinnacle of tennis... and a global attraction for both London and the UK.'

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam to use Slazenger balls and world No 3 Alexander Zverev hints at changes to the rubber used. But the All England Club, Slazenger's partner since 1902, says there have been no major changes to the ball since 1995.

England crashed to a 336-run defeat in the second Test against India as they were unable to dig deep enough to steal a draw at Edgbaston. For the first time in three years of the 'Bazball' era England accepted that a stalemate was the best they could hope for, attempting to frustrate the tourists on the final day rather than hunt an astronomical target of 608. But a team who have made their name as thrill-seeking fourth-innings chasers were not built to produce a day-long rearguard and were bowled out for 271 with 27 overs still in front of them. Jamie Smith was their best performer in front of a heavily pro-India crowd, following up a career-best 184 not out in the first innings with 88 in the second, but even he was unable to knuckle down for the long haul. He was caught on the boundary attempting to pull a third consecutive six, going down with a flourish rather than a fight. England's fate had been mostly sealed in the first session, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook both dismissed in the first half-hour to leave the hosts 83-5 and Ben Stokes lbw to the last ball before lunch. Akash Deep took the plaudits with 6-99 to complete a 10-wicket match and India will be licking their lips at the prospect of pairing him with Jasprit Bumrah at Lord's in next week's third Test. Heavy morning showers pushed the start back by an hour and 40 minutes, though rejigged session times meant only 10 of the scheduled 90 overs were lost. That nudged England's required run-rate up to 6.7 an over, effectively removing whatever sliver of optimism they had about embarking on a world record run chase. Instead, the game was all about India's hunt for wickets. It did not take long for them to open their account, danger man Deep taking just seven balls. Pope had watched his first over from the non-striker's end but was removed at the first time of asking, failing to smother the bounce as he deflected it back into his stumps off his arm. He threw his head back in frustration, gone for 24 to follow his golden duck on day two. Brook enjoyed considerably better fortunes in the first innings, making 158, but he was sent on his way in Deep's next over as the pitch began to offer some serious assistance. Targeting a sizeable crack just short of a good length, the seamer hit the jackpot as the ball jagged back dramatically and pinned a wrongfooted Brook on the inside of the knee. DRS upheld the umpire's lbw decision as Brook limped away beaten and bruised. Deep could easily have taken a third in a consistently menacing opening spell, Stokes just escaping a drag-on and Smith's stumps somehow surviving two near misses in four balls. The pair rallied for a workmanlike partnership worth 70, but India reaped the rewards of hustling one extra over before lunch. Ravindra Jadeja looked to be bowling the last over but dashed through it so quickly there was time for another. Washington Sundar used it to decisive effect, beat Stokes' flat-bat defence and striking him clean in front for 33. Batting looked increasingly treacherous as India used spin at both ends at the start of the afternoon session but attacking fields allowed Smith to score briskly on his way to another half-century. He took 17 off a single over from Sundar, including two hearty blows for six and a guided edge for four, to hasten the return of the quick men. The switch proved costly for Chris Woakes, who was tempted into pulling Prasidh Krishna and skied a top-edge up in the air. India prodded Smith's ego by asking Deep to bowl bouncers at him and, while the first two sailed into the stands, he shovelled the third into Sundar's hands. Police chiefs call for cuts to number of forces in England and Wales
Police chiefs in England and Wales have told ministers that the number of forces should be cut to end 'the postcode lottery for victims of crime', the Guardian has learned. They believe a reduction from the current 43 forces would save money, cut overheads and boost crime-fighting efforts. Law enforcement leaders told the home secretary, Yvette Cooper, last month at a roundtable on police reform that they were in agreement about the need for the change. Cooper has already backed other police reforms, such as setting up a national centre for policing, and believes the way policing across England and Wales is organised is out of date. But a lack of money threatens to delay changes and some smaller forces may oppose the changes. One source said any changes could start with smaller forces merging or being abolished. In the west, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire could merge. In the Midlands, Warwickshire could join with the West Mercia force or be absorbed by the much bigger West Midlands force. In the east, the Norfolk and Suffolk forces could merge. The West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and the South Yorkshire forces could also merge. Gavin Stephens, the chair of the National Police Chiefs' Council, told the Guardian: 'Police reform is about restructuring policing so that it can keep up with modern criminality, retaining the bedrock of community policing whilst modernising our workforce to deal with national threats such as organised crime and violence against women and girls. 'Our current model of 43 different police forces in England and Wales has a wide range of geographical size, workforce size and operational capabilities. There is also real variation in financial resilience and the ability to invest, which means policing operates in subtly different ways with often incompatible technology, which leads to inefficiencies and inconsistency. 'A smaller number of police forces, supported by a national policing organisation, would enable us to make decisions far quicker and maximise funding to invest in technology and our workforce. Making improvements to our service once and for all, instead of in 43 different ways, would help to end the postcode lottery victims face when reporting crime.' One senior source said: 'Everyone is in agreement we need fewer forces. It would create efficiencies and greater effectiveness.' Another source with knowledge of discussions said: 'Chiefs of smaller forces are nervous but accept this is where the tide is going. We hope for a phased reduction over the next decade.' No changes are expected to happen in this parliament, and any change of government after the next election could lead to the agreement to abolish police forces being scuppered. Politically, it was believed a reduction in the number of forces would have to happen under Labour. MPs representing Conservative areas, which tend to be less urban, feared police would move from more rural areas to areas where crime tended to be higher. One chief constable said that if their force absorbed a smaller force, people in more rural areas could be offered a guarantee about how many officers would be ringfenced to protect them. As yet, no detailed plans have been drawn up or presented to the government, but Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan police commissioner, said he favoured a reduction to as few as 12 forces. It is understood that this is the number of forces senior police chiefs think should ultimately cover England and Wales. In a piece for the Sunday Times, Rowley said: 'The 43-force model was designed in the 1960s and hasn't been fit for purpose for at least two decades. It hinders the effective confrontation of today's threats and stops us fully reaping the benefits of technology. 'We need to reduce the number of forces by two-thirds, with the new, bigger and fully capable regional forces supported by the best of modern technology and making better use of the limited funding available.' In Scotland, forces have already merged into one organisation covering the entire country, which is the second largest in the UK behind the Met. Northern Ireland is also covered by a single force.
