Shubman Gill scored 269 runs from 387 balls for India in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Shubman Gill is on fire for India with the bat in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. The right-handed batter from Punjab scored 147 runs in the first innings of the first Test played at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24 and amassed a total of 269 runs from 387 balls in the first innings of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
During his stay at the crease in the first innings of the second Test, Gill hammered 30 fours and three sixes and helped India post a total of 587 runs on the board.
For his two triple-digit scores in two Tests, Gill is earning a lot of praise from fans and followers of the game around the world. After Gill broke multiple batting records for India on Thursday (July 3), Gill was asked about his performance by former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, and while speaking to DK on Sky Sports at the end of the second day's play, Gill said that he worked on a few things before the start of the England tour and he is happy that those things are working for him.
'I worked on a few things before the series as well. At the end of the IPL (2025), I started working on a few things that I thought might be important for me going into the Test cricket, and looking at the results, I think those things are working for me," Gill said.
The double century by Gill on Thursday helped him break multiple batting and captaincy records.
He became the first Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match played in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries, and he also broke Virat Kohli's record of the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket.
Gill also became the second captain in the world after Sunil Gavaskar to score a century in his first Test and a double century in the second.
Gill's knock of 269 runs also helped him become only the third non-English captain in the world, after Bob Simpson of Australia and Graeme Smith of South Africa, to score 250-plus runs in a Test match played in England.

2nd Test: If England get a draw, people will ask whether Gill trusts his attack, says Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said the pressure will be on India to win the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test as day five will show whether the Shubman Gill-led side can get the remaining seven wickets to level the series at Edgbaston. The start of day five's play was delayed due to rain and it has made India's task tougher after picking three scalps in the final session on day four to kickstart their defence of 608 on a bright note. "There is a lot of pressure on India. You must think a lot of England to set them 600." "If they get a draw people will ask why they batted on so long, people will ask whether Gill trusts his attack. I think he does trust his attack but today will show whether they can get those seven wickets or not," said Hussain on Sky Sports' broadcast. He also said whenever England get to bat once the rain delay is over, they should aim to show positive intent. "I think the focus is on (picking) the seven wickets rather than the target but also on how England play. They have very rarely been in this situation and openly stated they don't play for draws." "I think they need positive intent and not to go into their shell. You don't want them just blocking but you don't want recklessness either. It's about winning the series, not just a one-off Test." Mark Butcher, the former England cricketer, feels the Ben Stokes-led side should consider a draw in Birmingham, if rain helps them escape with it, as a win. "I don't think it takes too much of a shift of attitude for England (to contemplate the draw). You could look upon escaping from this game as a win in itself." "England talk about being in the entertainment business - well, we can all remember entertaining draws, people on the edges of their seats with a wicket needed and three overs left, or whatever it might be. Are the fans going to be more entertained by you falling over in a heap or by you clinging on by your finger nails at the back end of the day?" "I think we know the answer to that. And I think it would be a massive feather in the cap of this team if they were able to do it. I also think that all the motivation England need was India not declaring until late last night. They are giving you a gilt-edged chance to escape from here without losing a match that they really and truly should have been buried in. Use that to your advantage," he concluded.

Nasser Hussain Takes A Dig At Gill: 'If England Get A Draw, People Will Ask...'

Last Updated: Nasser Hussain says India is under pressure to win on day five at Edgbaston with rain possibly coming to the aid of England. Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes the pressure is on India to secure victory in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test, as day five will determine if Shubman Gill's team can claim the remaining seven wickets to level the series at Edgbaston. The start of day five was delayed due to rain, complicating India's efforts after their strong defence of 608 with three wickets taken in the final session of day four. 'There is a lot of pressure on India. You must think a lot of England to set them 600." top videos View All 'The answer is clear. It would be a significant achievement for this team if they manage to do it. Additionally, India's late declaration last night should serve as motivation. They have given England a golden chance to escape without losing a match they should have been overwhelmed in. Use that to your advantage," he concluded. IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Heavy rain delays start of Day 5 at Edgbaston

Image credit: Getty Images NEW DELHI: Rain has delayed the start of Day 5 of the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test between India and England at Edgbaston on Sunday. India need seven wickets on the final day to square the five-match series 1-1. The UK Met Office had forecasted rain for Sunday, and when the broadcast began, the pitch and surrounding square were under covers. Though the rain briefly stopped, the covers came off, and the sun peeked through, dark clouds soon returned. IND vs ENG, Day 5: LIVE But around 3 pm India time, it started to rain heavily at the venue, with the outfield resembling a swimming pool and water puddles being formed near the covers. With the met department saying the forecast is better later on and rain will go away, it remains to be seen if India will get enough time to pick remaining seven wickets and register their first-ever Test victory in Birmingham. If the first session gets washed out due to rain, it would mean that India won't have the usual 90 overs quota to have a crack at winning the match. On day four, India captain Shubman Gill followed up his first-innings score of a career-best 269 with a gorgeous 161 and helped India to declare at 427/6, before Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj fired with the new ball to leave England in trouble. Gill has aggregated 430 runs in the match, the second most in a Test after Graham Gooch's 456 versus India in 1990. The Indian captain also became the first batter to score 200 and 150 in the same Test match. The declaration meant England were set a daunting target of 608 runs and had lost three wickets in the final session and were reeling at 72/3 at stumps, with Ollie Pope at 24 not out and Harry Brook being unbeaten on 15. India Dominate Day 4! Siraj & Akash Deep Rattle England With 536 runs remaining to be made and rain hampering an on time start of day time, it would be interesting to see if England push for a draw or continue in their Bazball ways. The last time England drew a Test match was during the 2023 Ashes because of rain. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here.
