Sarina Wiegman: Lionesses boss tipped to get Premier League job with future up in the air

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Sarina Wiegman has now won the Women's European Championship three times after guiding England to glory in Switzerland, but she is now being linked with a shock move to the Premier League
Sarina Wiegman has surprisingly been tipped for a Premier League role after masterminding the Lionesses' triumph at the Women's European Championship. The 55-year-old Dutch coach, who also led England to glory three years prior in the same competition and to the final of the Women's World Cup in 2023, is now being talked about as a potential trailblazer in English football.

Despite no current vacancies in the Premier League, ex- Tottenham Hotspur star Jamie O'Hara is adamant that Wiegman has the credentials to transition from women's to men's football, even if Wiegman herself remains nonchalant on the idea.

Speculation has gained momentum after FA chief Mark Bullingham remained coy regarding Wiegman's future, despite her having signed an extension last January to stay on until after the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

When quizzed about securing Wiegman's services beyond her current contract following her latest accomplishment, Bullingham said: "It's a bit early for that. We are delighted she is with us for the World Cup, and we will have that conversation at an appropriate time."
However, speaking on talkSPORT, O'Hara suggested that the FA's hesitation might just be a blessing for a top-flight club. The 38-year-old pundit is convinced that Wiegman possesses the necessary skills to take on the challenge, reports the Express.
"Unbelievable from the Lionesses. They've made it happen. Unbelievable from Sarina Wiegman as well," O'Hara said on The Sports Bar. "She plays great football, style of football. We want to play out from the back. We want to move the ball quickly. She's very calm. She's collected. She's done the business at the highest level.

"Tactically, she gets things right. She knows when to make subs. In tournament football, it's different. I understand. I get that. I don't think it's different pressure. It's only pressure because she'd be the first [woman to manage in the men's game]".
Jermaine Pennant, O'Hara's co-host and ex-Arsenal and Liverpool star, said: "It's a good question. The thing is, Premier League or the WSL [Women's Super League] is totally different from tournament football. Like I said, you can play not at your best and manage to scrape through.

"Over 38 games in the Premier League, you can't do that. There'll come a point where you'll get found out and you'll end up in a dogfight, in a relegation battle. So it's a different test."
Yet, former Spurs midfielder O'Hara stood firm in his opinion. He continued: "If you gave her the right infrastructure, you gave her the right football club, you know, with the players who would respect what she's about and respect what she's done, and I think you get that from Premier League footballers.

"I genuinely believe that she could handle it tactically. She's amazing in the press. Everyone loves her, what she's about as a manager. She knows what she's doing. She's got a really good team around her. The modern-day footballer, I think doesn't want a Mick McCarthy anymore. They don't need someone to come in and give them a grilling and get on their case."
When Pennant was asked whether he would have welcomed Spurs appointing Wiegman instead of Thomas Frank during their recent managerial hunt, he replied: "I wouldn't be against it. Yeah. I genuinely wouldn't be against it. I'm being serious. Because respect is earned, and she's earned it."
The Euro 2025 victory marks Wiegman's third consecutive European Championship success, having previously guided the Netherlands to glory in 2017. But what does Wiegman herself think about stepping into men's football?
In 2023, she insisted there was no progression to be made. She said: "My thoughts now are totally not in men's football, my thoughts are with the women's game and what we can do. I am just really happy in the role I work in now and I am really enjoying it... I really love my job for the FA and with England. This is the highest level."

Marlie Packer hands England World Cup worry during 97-7 rout of Spain

Marlie Packer's availability for the start of the World Cup is in doubt after she was sent off in England's crushing 97-7 demolition of Spain. The veteran flanker, who was captaining her country in Leicester, was dismissed 19 minutes from time for an adjudged illegal clearout on Spain full-back Claudia Pena. With the Red Roses set to play France next weekend in their final warm-up match ahead of their World Cup opener against the United States on August 22, Packer will face a disciplinary hearing to determine her fate. Helena Rowland scored a hat-trick at Welford Road as England's preparations for a tilt at global glory on home soil began in ruthless fashion. The versatile back, who was hailed as 'probably the most valuable person' in the Red Roses' squad by head coach John Mitchell after being named to start on the right wing, claimed two of seven first-half tries. Number eight Maddie Feaunati, scrum-half Lucy Packer, wing Jess Breach, prop Sarah Bern and centre Jade Shekells also crossed in the opening 40 minutes. Bern registered her second try early in the second period before Rowland completed her treble two minutes later and lock Lilli Ives Campion added another for Test rugby's top-ranked nation. Spain, who are ranked 13th in the world and will face Ireland in Pool C at the World Cup, claimed a fine 53rd-minute consolation through 19-year-old Harlequins player Pena, which was converted by fly-half Amalia Argudo. Full-back Emma Sing stretched England's lead before replacements May Campbell, Hannah Botterman and Abby Dow and vice-captain Megan Jones completed the scoring following the premature departure of skipper Packer.

Benjamin Sesko's agent's clear message to Man Utd as enormous transfer offer made

Benjamin Sesko has been linked with a move to Manchester United, and the striker's agent has already outlined the key criteria that he and his client will look for when deciding on his future Benjamin Sesko's agent, Elvis Basanovic, claims the 22-year-old wants a "special project with a special coach" as he targets a potential move to the Premier League. This news comes as Newcastle United table a huge £65.5million bid for the RB Leipzig striker, amidst the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer drama. ‌ Manchester United are also in the race to sign the towering centre-forward, with Ruben Amorim keen to get a No.9 in the door to front his attacking line. United are progressing with a deal to sign the Slovenian international after picking him as their preferred target over Ollie Watkins, but Newcastle could put a stop to this with their bid. ‌ Sesko has not commented on the prospect of a switch to the Premier League previously, meaning he has not given any clues or indications. Given this, it could all come down to who can provide the striker with the most attractive overall package, and that doesn't simply mean financially. ‌ Basanovic discussed the possibility of Sesko making a move to England earlier this summer, stating that the striker will be looking for a range of things before deciding where to play. The agent, who met former United football director John Murtough back in 2022 to talk about a potential move to Old Trafford, said: "It's not correct to speak about the names of clubs that are interested in Sesko, but maybe it is right to clarify a few things. "Let me tell you: Sesko is not competing with anyone. It's him vs him every day. We have a clear plan for the future and media speculation doesn't affect us. His numbers at his age are comparable to some strikers with already great careers. "That confirms my words. He will move from RB Leipzig only when we recognise a special club. A special project with a special coach." United are currently working on 'Project 150', an ambitious scheme launched last year with the target of clinching the Premier League crown again by 2028 for their 150th anniversary. Speaking about the initiative in June, United chief executive Omar Berrada said: "It's establishing a series of targets within a timeframe so we can focus our efforts and energy on that goal. Can the team win the Premier League title by 2028? Of course. ‌ "We've just finished 15th and it seems an impossible task. But why not aim for it? Why not do everything in our power?" However, Eddie Howe is keen to make an impression on Sesko it seems, as Newcastle's project focuses on making the club a permanent fixture in the top five of the league table. It remains to be seen where Sesko will decide to go - if he moves at all - but the transfer battle is looking likely to heat up between the north east and north west giants of the Premier League.
