Tirunelveli caste killing: Accused Surjith's police sub-inspector father arrested
The Palayamkottai police on Wednesday night (July 30, 2025) arrested Saravanan, 50, the father of the prime accused S. Surjith in the 'caste killing' case and suspended Sub-Inspector of Police. Earlier in the day, Mr. Surjith was detained under Goondas Act. Police sources said the investigation into case has been transferred to the Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID).
After a prolonged discussion, Inspector-General of Police, South Zone, Prem Anand Sinha, and Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, Santosh Hadimani, ordered the arrest of Mr. Saravanan, sources said.
Immediately after the murder of Scheduled Caste youth, C. Kavin Selvaganesh, 27, of Arumugamangalam in Thoothukudi district on Sunday afternoon (July 27, 2025), the police arrested suspect Mr. Surjith, 23, of Mangammal Salai in KTC Nagar in Palayamkottai. He murdered the IT employee for having been in a relationship with his elder sister, a siddha medical practitioner.
The police also picked up Mr. Surjith's father Mr. Saravanan and his mother Krishnakumari, also a Sub-Inspector of Police, for questioning.
Demanding their arrest, Kavin's family refused to accept his body kept in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital mortuary. They also refused to receive the compensation usually given to the family of the Scheduled Caste victims if they were assaulted or murdered by other upper or intermediate caste members.
They made it clear that they would receive the body only after the arrest of the couple. As Mr. Saravanan has been arrested, the family is expected to receive the body on Thursday (July 31).

UP: Nepal woman ‘tied to pole, beaten' by mob on suspicion of theft in Bareilly
A 22-year-old Nepalese woman was allegedly tied to a pole and assaulted by a mob in Bareilly upon allegedly seeing her moving 'suspiciously', police said on Saturday. According to the police, the victim is a native of Nepal and works at a call center in Noida. The police said she had gone to visit a male acquaintance at his residence in the Baradari locality of Bareilly upon his invitation. On Saturday evening, she reportedly went up to the terrace while talking on the phone around 2:30 am. Locals on night patrol noticed her and, growing suspicious, mistook her for a thief. Some youths even attempted to climb up to the terrace as they shone flashlights at her. According to the police, in a state of panic and unable to open the terrace door, she jumped from the first floor in an attempt to escape. She was caught by the crowd below, who then began to assault her. The mob allegedly tied her to a pole and continued to beat her until the police arrived and took her into custody. The police said that the residents of the Baradari area had been keeping nighttime watch due to a recent increase in thefts. According to the police the woman sustained a leg fracture after jumping from the first floor and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bareilly, where doctors have described her condition as stable. On Sunday, the police arrested four individuals, all in their 20s, who are allegedly involved in the incident. Superintendent of Police, Manush Pareek, stated that these four suspects have been apprehended, and efforts are ongoing to identify other individuals involved. A video circulating on social media shows the victim pleading with the mob to call the police and repeatedly asserting that she is not a thief. In another photograph, she is seen tied to a pole. Station House Officer Suresh Chandra Gautam of the Kila police station reported that charges have been filed against the suspects for voluntarily causing grievous harm using dangerous weapons, among others.

Cops Bust Armed Robbers' Gang, Seize Valuables Worth Rs 8 Lakh
Nagpur: In a swift operation, Nagpur Rural Police dismantled an armed robbery gang, arresting five suspects and recovering materials worth Rs8 lakh within four hours of two reported armed robberies. The accused, involved in armed robberies in Butibori and MIDC Butibori, were apprehended in Wardha district following a coordinated effort led by Superintendent of Police Harsah A Poddar, Additional SP Anil Mgaske, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepak Agarwal. The first incident occurred on Saturday at 1.45 pm near a bank in Butibori, where Vishal Ninave was robbed of Rs15,000 at knifepoint by three unidentified men in a red Swift car. A second robbery took place shortly after, between 2.10 pm and 2.15 pm, at a liquor shop in Takalghat, where Prabhakar Vasad lost Rs15,000 in cash and an iPhone 12 worth Rs40,000. Using informant network and technical evidence, police teams from Butibori, MIDC Butibori, and Local Crime Branch, with assistance from Wardha Police, tracked the suspects to Jama Masjid Chowk, Wardha. The arrested individuals — Kunal Hemne (28), Ravindrasingh Juni (31), Manthan Mohrle (26), Tushar Sahare (26), and Nayan Kadu (26) — were found with a country-made Mauzer, a country-made pistol, fake firearms, two magazines, four Android mobiles, Rs41,980 in cash, and the red Swift car used in the crimes. Cops return 6cr worth of recovered valuables to 200 residents
Pune: Over 200 residents of Pimpri Chinchwad got back their stolen valuables, collectively worth Rs5 crore, that were retrieved by the Pimpri Chinchwad police in different cases. The valuables were returned to the owners at police headquarters in Nigdi in the presence of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey on Saturday. The valuables included 330g of gold jewellery worth Rs17 lakh, 6 vehicles worth Rs41 lakh, Rs5.15 crore recovered by Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police along with 167 mobile handsets. Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey said that people fell prey to the cyber criminals out of fear and greed. "Cyber criminals take advantage of it and dupe them. If anyone gets trapped in cyber crimes like 'digital arrest' or 'Deep Fake', he or she should immediately alert the police," Choubey said.
