Smriti Mandhana's hundred powers India to statement win over England in 1st T20I
The men's team may have suffered a heartbreaking loss at Headingley during the recent Test match but the Indian women's team stepped up to hand England a massive 97-run loss in the first T20I between both sides at Trent Bridge on Saturday, June 28. Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana led the way with her record-breaking hundred that allowed India to post a mammoth total of 210 for five in their 20 overs. advertisementChasing the target, the England batters, apart from Nat Sciver-Brunt, were blown away by the Indian bowlers as the hosts suffered their biggest loss in the T20I format. Sciver-Brunt scored 66 but it was Sree Charani, who was making her debut, who was the star of the show in the second innings, picking up four for 12 as England were bundled out for just 113 runs in 14.5 overs. ENG-W vs IND-W UpdatesNo Harmanpreet, no problem India were dealt a heavy blow before the toss as captain Harmanpreet Kaur was ruled out of the contest. Harmanpreet was hit on the head during a warm-up game and the team management decided to give the star batter some rest. This meant Mandhana had to come in as the skipper for the game on a wicket that seemed like an absolute delight for the batters. advertisementIndia were put into bat by England and Mandhana was the aggressor early on. She got a few boundaries going while Shafali Verma at the other end struggled for momentum. Despite Mandhana's 31 off 19 balls in the powerplay, India got just 47 runs in the first six. Something needed to change and it was Mandhana, who led the charge. The turning point of the match was the seventh over when the stand-in skipper decided to take Sophie Eccelstone to the cleaners with a couple of sixes and a boundary as 19 came from the ace spinner's first six balls. Mandhana got to her 31st T20I fifty soon after, but Shafali's struggle in the middle came to an end, bringing in Harleen Deol to the middle. The right-handed batter was probably going to sit out the game had it not been for Harmanpreet's niggle and she made full use of the chance. Harleen started with some confidence and four boundaries and this helped Mandhana also to switch gears easily. Harleen got a lifeline as Wyatt-Hodge dropped a sitter and the duo cashed in on it, getting their fifty-run stand in quick time. Mandhana was always eyeing a hundred in this format after her many attempts and finally decided Saturday was the day for her to be in the history books. The run-rate kept increasing and so was the elegance in the shots from the skipper as two boundaries were enough for her to get to the landmark and become the second Indian batter to reach the feat. advertisementSoon after, Harleen fell for a well-made 43 off 23 balls as the wickets started to tumble. Mandhana added some more runs and was dismissed in the final over, but the damage was already done. The Charani showThe issue for England wasn't the pitch but the way they went about with the chase. The surface remained true to its nature but the English batters looked to be in a hurry instead of timing their innings. Sophia Dunkley was the first to fall to Amanjot Kaur in the very first over. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge went off the first ball of the second over and the hosts were in big trouble. Sciver-Brunt looked a class apart from the rest of her compatriots as she powered them to 58 in 6 overs before Beaumont was sent packing by Deepti Sharma. advertisementAnd that was about it in terms of partnerships as well as wickets kept tumbling. Charani opened her wicket tally with the scalp of Capsey that left England reeling at 71 for 5 in nine overs. Sciver-Brunt got to her fifty in 31 balls and was waging the lone battle as Charani came in to clean up the tail along with the rest. She got the wicket of Sciver-Brunt and Lauren Bell to seal the deal as India took a 1-0 lead. The next match is in Bristol on July 1. - EndsTune InMust Watch

Mandhana, Charani flatten England at Trent Bridge
Nottingham, June 28 (UNI) India Women launched their T20I series against England in emphatic fashion with a comprehensive 97-run victory, powered by skipper Smriti Mandhana's scintillating century and a clinical bowling performance that bundled out England Women for 113 in 14.5 overs. After electing to bat first, India posted an imposing 210 for 5 on the back of Mandhana's majestic 112 off 62 balls, her maiden century in T20 Internationals, which featured 15 elegant boundaries and three lofted sixes. Mandhana, who brought up her hundred with a glorious lofted extra-cover drive off Lauren Bell in the 16th over, dominated the innings with a blend of finesse and ferocity. Her innings earned a standing ovation from the Trent Bridge crowd, and the performance will be remembered as one of the finest in India Women's T20I history. The skipper received solid support from opener Shafali Verma (20 off 22), as the duo added 77 runs for the first wicket. Shafali struck three boundaries before falling to a miscued big shot off Em Arlott. The middle overs saw India shifting gears rapidly, thanks to a powerful 94-run partnership between Mandhana and Harleen Deol. Harleen smashed 43 off just 23 deliveries, peppering the field with seven boundaries before she was dismissed by a sharp catch from Arlott near the ropes. Despite a slight wobble after Harleen's departure in the 16th over — when Richa Ghosh (12) holed out after two boundaries, and Jemimah Rodrigues was caught without scoring — India maintained the tempo. Lauren Bell capitalised on the mini-collapse, returning impressive figures of 3 for 27. Mandhana, undeterred, kept the scoreboard ticking with a couple of stylish boundaries in the 19th over, taking India past the 200-mark. She eventually fell for 112, caught by Nat Sciver-Brunt off Sophie Ecclestone. Deepti Sharma chipped in with a clever boundary in the final over, while Amanjot Kaur remained unbeaten on 3, surviving a dropped catch. In response, England's chase never got going under pressure from India's disciplined bowling attack. England were allout for just 113 in 14.5 overs, with only Nat Sciver-Brunt (66 off 42 balls) showing any resistance. She struck 10 boundaries at a strike rate of 157.14 before falling to Shree Charani in the penultimate over. England's innings began with back-to-back jolts. Sophia Dunkley (7) and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (0) fell within the first two overs, with Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma striking early. Deepti returned excellent figures of 3-0-22-2, removing both Wyatt-Hodge and Tammy Beaumont (10), who was bowled after a brief resistance. Wicketkeeper Amy Jones managed just 1 before being stumped off Radha Yadav, who also accounted for Em Arlott (12). Alice Capsey (5), Sophie Ecclestone (1), and Lauren Filer (2) all fell cheaply, while Shree Charani wrecked the lower middle-order, claiming 4 for 12 in 3.5 overs — the best figures in the match. Arundhati Reddy chipped in with the crucial wicket of Lauren Filer, while Radha Yadav (2/15) and Sneh Rana (2-0-13-0) provided tight spells to choke England further. With this win, India Women take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series, with the next encounter set to be another high-voltage clash. Mandhana's record-setting century and Charani's dream bowling spell made it a dominant outing for the visitors in Nottingham. UNI BDN GNK
