Smriti Mandhana's hundred powers India to statement win over England in 1st T20I
The men's team may have suffered a heartbreaking loss at Headingley during the recent Test match but the Indian women's team stepped up to hand England a massive 97-run loss in the first T20I between both sides at Trent Bridge on Saturday, June 28. Stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana led the way with her record-breaking hundred that allowed India to post a mammoth total of 210 for five in their 20 overs. advertisementChasing the target, the England batters, apart from Nat Sciver-Brunt, were blown away by the Indian bowlers as the hosts suffered their biggest loss in the T20I format. Sciver-Brunt scored 66 but it was Sree Charani, who was making her debut, who was the star of the show in the second innings, picking up four for 12 as England were bundled out for just 113 runs in 14.5 overs. ENG-W vs IND-W UpdatesNo Harmanpreet, no problem
India were dealt a heavy blow before the toss as captain Harmanpreet Kaur was ruled out of the contest. Harmanpreet was hit on the head during a warm-up game and the team management decided to give the star batter some rest. This meant Mandhana had to come in as the skipper for the game on a wicket that seemed like an absolute delight for the batters. advertisementIndia were put into bat by England and Mandhana was the aggressor early on. She got a few boundaries going while Shafali Verma at the other end struggled for momentum. Despite Mandhana's 31 off 19 balls in the powerplay, India got just 47 runs in the first six. Something needed to change and it was Mandhana, who led the charge. The turning point of the match was the seventh over when the stand-in skipper decided to take Sophie Eccelstone to the cleaners with a couple of sixes and a boundary as 19 came from the ace spinner's first six balls. Mandhana got to her 31st T20I fifty soon after, but Shafali's struggle in the middle came to an end, bringing in Harleen Deol to the middle. The right-handed batter was probably going to sit out the game had it not been for Harmanpreet's niggle and she made full use of the chance. Harleen started with some confidence and four boundaries and this helped Mandhana also to switch gears easily. Harleen got a lifeline as Wyatt-Hodge dropped a sitter and the duo cashed in on it, getting their fifty-run stand in quick time. Mandhana was always eyeing a hundred in this format after her many attempts and finally decided Saturday was the day for her to be in the history books. The run-rate kept increasing and so was the elegance in the shots from the skipper as two boundaries were enough for her to get to the landmark and become the second Indian batter to reach the feat. advertisementSoon after, Harleen fell for a well-made 43 off 23 balls as the wickets started to tumble. Mandhana added some more runs and was dismissed in the final over, but the damage was already done. The Charani showThe issue for England wasn't the pitch but the way they went about with the chase. The surface remained true to its nature but the English batters looked to be in a hurry instead of timing their innings. Sophia Dunkley was the first to fall to Amanjot Kaur in the very first over. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge went off the first ball of the second over and the hosts were in big trouble. Sciver-Brunt looked a class apart from the rest of her compatriots as she powered them to 58 in 6 overs before Beaumont was sent packing by Deepti Sharma. advertisementAnd that was about it in terms of partnerships as well as wickets kept tumbling. Charani opened her wicket tally with the scalp of Capsey that left England reeling at 71 for 5 in nine overs. Sciver-Brunt got to her fifty in 31 balls and was waging the lone battle as Charani came in to clean up the tail along with the rest. She got the wicket of Sciver-Brunt and Lauren Bell to seal the deal as India took a 1-0 lead. The next match is in Bristol on July 1. - EndsTune InMust Watch

Soccer-Lyon owner Textor to step back from club management
By Fernando Kallas HT Image PHILADELPHIA, - American businessman John Textor plans to step back from the day-to-day management of Olympique Lyonnais following the club's relegation to Ligue 2, which was confirmed after a meeting with French football's financial watchdog this week. Textor, who owns the French club through his Eagle Football Group, revealed his decision in an interview with Brazil's TV Globo on Saturday, shortly before his Brazilian side Botafogo lost 1-0 to Palmeiras in the Club World Cup, saying he could have dealt better with French football politics. Lyon's demotion was provisionally announced by the DNCG in November due to financial irregularities and was confirmed on Tuesday. Textor said the club would appeal against the decision and that Lyon's financial position remained strong despite the ruling. "I will tell you that we're very well capitalised in France," Textor told TV Globo. "It's clear that I've been much better on the pitch than managing France. I have not been so good at the politics of France. I think that's well known. So the process is, for me, as an American capitalist, adjusting to that system." Textor said his focus would shift towards broader responsibilities within Eagle Football Group which also includes Botafogo and formerly included a 43% stake in English club Crystal Palace, sold earlier this week. "I am going to spend a lot more time focusing on Eagle Global, coming back frankly a bit more to Botafogo," he said. "I've got very good partners in the Eagle Football Group shareholders who are going to take a lead on dealing with some of the issues that I have frankly not been very good at dealing with." Despite Lyon's relegation, Textor highlighted the club's recent achievements, including back-to-back qualifications for the Europa League, and reassured fans about their financial stability. "We've never been more liquid in cash. But there are things in the process I did that disappointed the governing bodies there that we need to fix," Textor said. "We did pass through the financial sustainability review with UEFA, which is quite a comprehensive process. So the fact that we didn't pass through France has more to do with some of the specific elements that I brought to the table that I should have improved." Textor hinted at a potential acquisition in the United Kingdom to replace the Crystal Palace stake. "We have our U.K. strategy where we need to look at who our new club is. What are we going to buy there? What's the partnership? Because it's that collaboration between the clubs that's been so successful for us," he said. ED takes note of leading dailies for ‘surrogate ads' of illegal betting platforms ‘preying' on users
This and other such apps are not only being endorsed by celebrities—including former cricketers like Shikhar Dhawan and actors like Sonu Sood—but their ads also appear prominently on the front pages of major Indian publications, for which they have been paid more than Rs 50 crore, ThePrint has learnt. Dhawan's team has denied he is associated with the betting app. Once a person scans and clicks the link, they are redirected to '1xBet', a betting platform. New Delhi: A full front-page advertisement in three prominent newspapers urges readers to scan a QR code to join 1XBAT Sporting Lines, a sports merchandise brand allegedly linked to an offshore betting platform. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating several illegal gaming cases, has now taken note of these 'surrogate advertisements'. Thousands of people are falling prey to this misleading promotion daily through these QR codes, a source said. A source familiar with the matter said this practice—promoting betting platforms under the name of sports merchandise brands 1XBAT and 1XBAT Sporting Lines—violates multiple laws and regulations, including the Information Technology Act, Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and advisories issued by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB). 'There are 22 crore Indian users of various betting apps. 11 crore are regular users. Moreover, by looking at these ads in the papers, many more people are joining these applications and falling prey on a daily basis,' a source said. When the investigators approached the media outlets to ask who were giving these ads, no clear answers were given. 'They said a company based in Switzerland was giving the ads,' the source said. ThePrint reached out to 1XBAT over social media with queries but no response was received. Their website does not mention any email address or details of the company's owners. This report will be updated as and when a response is received. According to ED sources, 1xBet, FairPlay, Parimatch, Lotus365 are heavily promoted by celebrities. For example, 1xBet is promoted by Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Sonu Sood, Suresh Raina, Urvashi Rautela and several social media influencers, despite bans. 'The online betting market in India is now worth over $100 billion, growing 30 percent every year,' a source said. 'As per estimates, top betting apps are evading Rs 27,000 crore in taxes every year.' The officer explained that many apps use the name of 'skill games' to appear legal, which in reality is not the case. The results of these games are not based on skill but purely on luck. 'Fantasy games involve money and rigged algorithms. If money is at stake, it is not a game, it is gambling,' the officer said. 'It is a menace. It is not just an addiction but causes stress, depression and even leads to suicides as it pushes people in debt,' a second officer said. 'In India, thousands including students and housewives have died by suicide due to online betting losses. A PIL says over 1,023 suicides happened in Telangana alone. Poor people suffer the most. They fall into the trap of easy money and lose everything,' the officer explained. The officer added that there have been many instances that came to their notice of school and college children getting involved in these games and losing money just in a bid to 'get rich fast'. According to a second source, dummy accounts were made on the platform by officers probing the cases and details of deposit and withdrawal through mule accounts were identified. The ED has identified several Benami accounts till now and action has been taken. But this is a rampant problem and a challenging one, the source said. 'They use accounts for only a few hours. By the time we identify the VPA handle, call details from NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) and send directions to the Bank; money is already gone,' the source explained. Also Read: As Telangana police crack down on actors promoting betting apps, CM Reddy announces SIT 'Need for regulation' Alerted by the high volume of transactions and the scale of money involved, the Centre is also undertaking a deep look into the multi-billion dollar online gaming industry, red-flagged by investigating agencies for fraud and money laundering. Although several meetings have taken place in this regard, nothing concrete has yet been decided. Sources in the security establishment told ThePrint that various ministries, departments, and agencies were collectively working on a comprehensive report on the extent of growth of the online gaming industry and its national security ramifications to recommend regulations for the industry. The primary aim is to bring the online gaming companies under anti-money laundering laws, subjecting them to stricter compliance and financial scrutiny, to curb unchecked mushrooming of online gaming apps—already under probe—duping users. IND v ENG: Sree Charani takes four wickets on WT20I debut at Trent Bridge
N. Sree Charani took four wickets on her debut during the first T20I between India Women and England Women, taking place at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday. She registered the second-best figures for an Indian Woman on T20I debut — four for 12 in 3.5 overs. — after Sravanthi Naidu, who picked up four wickets and gave nine runs in her first match, playing against Bangladesh in 2014. Alice Capsey was the spinner's first scalp — the English all-rounder got a thick, outside edge which landed safe in Arundhati Reddy's arms at short third. In the same match, the youngster took her second wicket after she forced Sophie Ecclestone to go big, but the English all-rounder found Jemimah Rodrigues over at deep mid-wicket. In her last over, she claimed the prized scalp of an in-form Nat Sciver-Brunt. The England skipper, who scored a fighting half-century, was caught behind by keeper Richa Ghosh. While initially not given out, India took the review, which showed that Sciver-Brunt had nicked it. Charani soon wrapped up the innings with the final scalp — her fourth one — taking the wicket of Lauren Bell, who holed out to Jemimah at deep mid-wicket, helping India secure a 97-run victory over England to take the series lead. The 20-year-old made her international debut during last month's Tri-Nation ODI series, which India won after beating Sri Lanka in the summit clash. She took six wickets in five matches in that tournament. Charani also impressed in this year's Women's Premier League, where she took four wickets in two innings and reached the final with the Delhi Capitals.
