MFT: Ivory Scott Looks Back On His First Publishing Deal
CLOSE Johnny Nunez
Making his mark in the game by way of Chicago, songwriter Ivory Scott has been on a streak when it comes to cranking out bangers for the likes of others — see: 'THIQUE' by Beyoncé, 'Baddest' by Yung Bleu, Chris Brown & 2 Chainz — while also saving a few for his own budding career as a soul crooner.
As many found out last month with the release of his debut album, MUD (Music U Desire) , the voice behind that pen is packing something serious as well!

Scott paid us a visit here at 'My First Time' to reflect back on the early days when he learned what it truly means to grind. Even with a broken foot due to a prior skateboarding injury, the struggle of hopping around on one foot in order to make the best out of his first publishing deal proved to be the discipline needed to become great at his craft altogether. It's no surprise that it only took a few years for the GRAMMY nominations to roll in and collaborations with big names like Madonna.

MFT: Briana Shanae Reflects On Making Her First Gospel Song
Paras Griffin For gospel rapper Briana Shanae, creating her first gospel song was a leap of faith she hadn't anticipated. Having spent years immersed in secular music, she relished the creative freedom it brought. However, everything changed when she released her own cover of GloRilla's chart-topping hit, 'TGIF.' What began as a simple remix quickly turned into a source of controversy. RELATED: My First Time – Krayzie Bone Reflects On First Time Meeting Eazy-E In this week's 'My First Time,' the artist some also know as Bri Trilla gives us some insight into the backlash from that cover, particularly the comments section for the post seen above that saw many questioning her values, motivations and even her faith. Amid the whirlwind of criticism though, she found herself confronting a deeper question: What kind of impact did she want her music to have? It soon became clear to her that while music had always been her outlet, she now longed to create something rooted in hope, healing and purpose. That inspiration eventually led to the creation of her very first gospel track, 'God Did It.' Writing 'God Did It' wasn't without challenges. The shift pushed Briana to face her own doubts and insecurities. She wondered if listeners would accept her change in direction or if she was ready to break from others' expectations. Still, as she poured herself into the song, Briana found a peace she hadn't felt in a long time. For Briana Shanae, making music was no longer just about self-expression—it was about honoring her faith and sharing something greater with the world. With 'God Did It,' she truly began to discover her voice, no longer afraid of the noise and ready to amplify her purpose. Watch Briana Shanae aka Bri Trilla below as she breaks down making the transition from secular music to gospel in this week's 'My First Time': SEE ALSO

Collaborator on New Justin Bieber Album 'Swag' Says He Was ‘Mad Cool'
Putting aside whatever speculation, rumors and chatter surround Justin Bieber in recent months, one thing remains certain: his talent as a musician is undeniable. Going one step further, the process of working with Bieber has largely received high praise from those collaborating on his albums. That fact stood true again on Bieber's newest album, Swag, which features collaborations with several names and various artists. This includes Cash Cobain, whose debut studio album, Play Cash Cobain, was released in 2024. During an interview with GQ, Cobain spoke about the process of working with Bieber and explained how the duo came together to create the song "Swag." Cobain revealed that he messaged Bieber after the 31-year-old showed love by posting his song Trippin on a Yacht. 'I wrote bro like, 'We got to get some work in,'' Cash recalls. 'So I'm like, all right, boom—took bro's number down and then we was chopping it up for, I don't know, a couple days.' Cash said that Bieber reached out to him when he was in New York and met the pop star at his house, where there were several producers, rappers and artists. The 27-year-old rapper then detailed to GQ what the creative process was like working alongside Bieber, calling him "mad cool." 'You might think Justin Bieber would be on some other s---, but bro is mad cool. It was just natural...' Cash recalls, saying that Bieber was very loose in communicating a specific vibe that he was shooting for when making the song. 'He was just like, 'Swag. Swag, bro.' He on some swag s---. That's [all] him right there.' Cash went on to praise Bieber's first song on the album Swag, saying that the first song stood out to him, calling the beat something he's never heard anyone "really try to emulate." Bieber's 21-song album features credits to a few well-known names, including 2 Chainz for background vocals on "Yukon." The same song gives credit to Eminem as a composer-lyricist, but as Billboard details, that stems from an interpolation of a line from Eminem's "Untitled," a song on his 2010 album on New Justin Bieber Album 'Swag' Says He Was 'Mad Cool' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 17, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
