SC writes to Centre, urges to direct former CJI Chandrachud to vacate official residence
Justice Chandrachud, who served as the 50th CJI between November 2022 and November 2024, currently occupies the Type VIII bungalow at 5 Krishna Menon Marg, nearly eight months after demitting office.
As per government rules, a serving CJI is entitled to a Type VIII bungalow, whereas, after retirement, he can stay in a Type VII rent-free accommodation for a period of up to six months.
The SC administration in its letter dated July 1, urged the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to ensure that the bungalow is vacated immediately and returned to the court's housing pool.
"I am to request you to take the possession of Bungalow No. 5, Krishna Menon Marg, from Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud without any further delay as not only the permission that was granted for retention... has expired on 31st May, 2025, but also the period of six months provided in Rule 3B of the 2022 Rules has expired on 10th May, 2025,' said the letter.
Notably, two successive CJIs — Justice Sanjiv Khanna (now retired) and the present CJI B R Gavai, decided not to move into the premises of 5 Krishna Menon Marg, and continued to stay in their previously allotted bungalows.
Meanwhile, Justice Chandrachud has cited some personal circumstances as his reason for the overstay.
Pointing out that the government accommodation allotted to him has not been used for two years and is currently undergoing repairs and renovation, the former CJI said he had been roaming around searching for other options including hotels.
"But my daughters need a home with special needs. I have been roaming around since February. I have also tried service apartments and hotels, but none of them worked out," NDTV quoted him as saying.
"Most of my items are packed. I will shift as soon as they are done. It's a matter of a few days. I am not interested (in overstaying), but I don't have a choice," he added.
The Supreme Court currently has 33 judges. Among them, four judges have not been allocated official accommodation, the TNIE has learnt. One of them resides in a state guest house while others live in transit apartments of the SC.

Samosa for 5 paise, BEST bus 5: CJI on nostalgic trip at Girgaum school
Mumbai: Supreme Court Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai on Sunday visited Chikitsak Samuh High School, Girgaum where he studied from classes 3 to 7, between 1969 and 1973, in Marathi medium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CJI praised his teachers for shaping him, crediting the debating skills he honed there and values of equality and social benevolence inculcated in students for his rise to the topmost post in the Indian judiciary. Walking down memory lane, the CJI shared nostalgic moments. "Mother would give me 20 paise. I would walk towards Mantralaya to catch BEST bus 5 to Gaiwadi and walk some more to school The bus ticket cost 5 paise. In those days, a samosa patti would cost 5 paise with home-made jam, and misal pavcost 10 paise." The school was then surrounded by chawls. "...The chawls are still visible from the school. The Marathi sanskriti is still intact here. This is part of the real 'amchi Mumbai'," he said in Marathi to a gathering of his former batchmates, teachers, and current school students, some of whom, as part of NCC, practised hard to form a band within six months to welcome him. "Of all welcomes I received so far across India and even abroad as CJI, the little children's performance today as a band was the warmest," Justice Gavai gushed. "I was interested in debates. My journey in public speaking began on this stage. Also, PT class by Joshi sir induced the necessary discipline in us as students. Studying in Marathi medium was not a handicap; it grounded me," he added. Chikitsak is now an English medium ICSE school as well. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The CJI, who is due to retire in November, met his classmates who finished 10th in 1976. He met old school staff and, most of all, remembered one teacher whose signature on his school leaving certificate was the memento he was presented with. He advised young students to work hard, be honest. The three-storey school building in Sadashiv Cross Lane has no lifts. On Sunday, local MLA and minister, MP Lodha, who was also present, promised to help with paperwork to install one.

Will urge SC for uniform rules on overage vehicles: CM
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said Delhi govt will urge the Supreme Court to allow uniform rules on overage vehicles in the national capital, in line with those followed across the country. "We will tell the Supreme Court about the pollution control measures taken by the govt. The parameters that are applicable in the entire country should also apply to Delhi. We want Delhiites not to face any inconvenience," she said, adding that they are committed to providing relief to people. A 2018 Supreme Court judgment banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi. In 2014, a National Green Tribunal order also prohibited the parking of vehicles aged over 15 years in public places. Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, in his letter to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) chairman Rajesh Verma, said the fuel ban is not feasible and cannot be implemented due to "technological challenges". Till March this year, there were more than 60 lakh overage vehicles in Delhi. The previous year, 39,273 were scrapped while in 2023, the figure stood at 22,397. In his letter, Sirsa said that a stage-wise implementation that begins only in Delhi will not serve its intended purpose. "It is highly likely to lead to vehicle owners procuring fuel from adjacent districts like Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, thereby circumventing the ban and potentially fostering an illegal cross-border market for fuel, which would further exacerbate the problem," he said.

Now, RJD, Moitra & PUCL move Supreme Court
After the Association for Democratic Reforms, multiple petition filed by different parties, including NGO People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), TMC MP Mahua Moitra and RJD , have approached Supreme Court against Election Commission 's special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls and told the court that the exercise is illegal and calculated to disenfranchise the state's mobile migrant population which works across India but returns home to exercise their democratic right to vote. The parties are likely to mention the case before SC on Monday for urgent hearing. Moitra, in her petition, submitted that the impugned order unlawfully shifted the burden of proving eligibility from the State to the individual elector and arbitrarily excludes commonly accepted identity documents such as Aadhaar and ration cards. Shifting of the burden of voter authentication onto the citizens, and to view every citizen with suspicion until proven otherwise, is a breach of the constitutional spirit, and also is in direct contravention of the statutory scheme to which EC is bound, she said. PUCL, which moved SC through advocate Talha Abdul Rahman, submitted that the timing of the decision appears "deliberately to disenfranchise Bihar's mobile workforce during crucial electoral periods".
