[UPDATED] Preschool bus crash: Driver jailed seven days, fined RM8,000
PETALING JAYA: A bus driver involved in a crash near Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) that injured a teacher and three pre-schoolers has been jailed for seven days and fined RM8,000. Mohamad Hamir Masruddin, 44, was also banned from driving for five years after he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless and dangerous driving. Magistrate Nur Natasya Mohtarudin handed down the sentence after considering the facts of the case and Hamir's plea for leniency. Hamir appeared composed as he stood in the dock following the sentencing. The crash occurred on Aug 2 at about 12.18pm along Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1. The tour bus was transporting six teachers and 30 pre-schoolers from Ampang to the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park in Serdang. Hamir lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer to the left and hit a tree. One teacher and three children sustained minor injuries and were taken to Serdang Hospital for treatment. They were all discharged on the same day. Hamir pleaded for leniency, saying he was a freelancer who was paid only when he secured jobs. "I have school-going children and my mother is sickly back in our hometown," he said. Deputy public prosecutor Nurain Syafiqeen Mohd Rozi urged the court to impose a proportionate sentence, saying Hamir had admitted to the facts of the case. "The court should consider public interest over his," she said. The charge, under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, carries a maximum jail term of five years and a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not exceeding RM15,000. Serdang police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the driver was alleged to have been sleep-deprived and dozed off before the crash. Preliminary screening showed he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but had 13 previous summonses.
