
Gardeners urged to grow unlimited supply of £1.50 herb bought in supermarkets
Gardeners will never need to pick up these herbs again in the supermarket if they follow these handy tips to grow their own

A cooking pro on TikTok is sharing how you can get an 'unlimited supply' of your favourite herbs, including coriander and mint. The account, zaynahbakes, recently posted a video sharing a beginner's guide to herb gardening.
Zaynah Din is the author of the cookbook Desified: Delicious recipes for Ramadan, Eid & every day. In the video which has garnered over 270,000 views, Zaynah holds two store-bought herb pots, which retail for around £1.50 in supermarkets, and provides instruction on how to grow coriander and mint at home.
'You only need a handful of things,' promises Zaynah before listing the supplies. 'Some compost, some larger pots, a little shovel and gardening gloves - which are optional.'
Zaynah then begins carefully slicing open the bag of compost with a knife. 'Take your herb pot. Squeeze it to loosen the soil and it should just come out in one go.' Being mindful to keep the soil intact makes for a clean transfer that doesn't disturb the roots.
'If you know anything about gardening or herbs,' says Zaynah, 'you'll know that mint is very invasive and it grows really quickly. Kind of like weeds.' For that reason, Zaynah says the mint will quickly 'take over' whichever planter you put it in.
You should be a bit more strategic about which planter you choose for your coriander, advised Zaynah. 'You don't want to put your coriander from [the small store-bought] pot into a massive planter. Because actually if you have too much room it will kill your plant.
'You wanna do it in stages,' she says, 'from small to medium and then move it into a larger pot.'
'Take your plant, your little pot of herbs here and - without ripping the roots too much - you want to separate - crack it open.' Zaynah uses her bare hands to crumble open the stiff soil - but again, you can use gardening gloves for this process if you prefer.
Zaynah advises viewers to be gentle to avoid killing too many of the roots, though she promises they will grow back and replenish in any case. The chef also adds a tip for at-home cooks: 'Cut off [the] coriander herbs on the top and use them in your cooking because they'll grow back in a few days'.
Taking her own advice, she cuts off a few leaves from the store-bought plant. The trim will also keep the plant from getting tangled, Zaynah advises.
After ripping the store-bought plant into quarters, Zaynah says the next step is to fill up your planters with compost - breaking it up as you go. Once the planter is about halfway full, you can then use the shovel to make a little space for each of the broken up segments of coriander.
Once each plant is situated in its designated spot, you can then take some extra compost and fill in gaps around the plant. Repeat the exact same process with the mint plant.
'If you love cooking like I do, it's a very special feeling when you start to use the ingredients that you grew yourself in your garden,' shares Zaynah.

During a seven-second clip that was shared online just days ago, the savvy mum lifted up a patch of grass in her garden, only to reveal a layer of stones and rubble. Alongside the clip, the bargain-hunter wrote: 'New build life be like…' Not only this, but as she showed off the 'new build snags', she then explained: 'Reality of having a new build house… lawn laid on literal stone.' She also added: 'Then they tell you to keep watering it so it doesn't die.' According to Haywood Landscapes, a number of factors can cause water-logging of your garden and particularly in new build gardens, there are two common causes - soil compaction and shallow topsoil over clay subsoil. The experts suggest that topsoil should be at least 15cm thick for satisfactory lawn growth, 30cm for shrubs and ideally deeper still for trees. If less, plant growth may be adversely affected. Having 15cm as standard will ensure healthy root development, water retention and nutrient availability, which are all essential for plant survival and growth. What to do if you fall foul of a dodgy builder Under the Consumer Rights Act, anyone who enters a contract for goods and services can expect these to be supplied with reasonable care and skill - and this includes builders, plumbers, decorators and electricians. It also includes materials, which should be of satisfactory quality, as described and fit for purpose. If you've fallen victim to a builder, or had a dispute with your contractors, you should firstly collate all evidence you have, including paperwork, photos, videos, messages and bank statements. Then, try to resolve the issues directly with the firm, before trying an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme such as mediation or ombudsman services. If this doesn't work, contact your bank to find out whether you can recover any money spent using Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act (if the job cost between £100 and £30,000, your credit card company is jointly liable if something goes wrong). If this doesn't work, report them to the police on 101. While the lines between what is criminal and just bad practice are blurred, a contractor could be done for fraud. It is also important to contact Trading Standards. Citizens' Advice has an online form to help you do this. TS will then decide whether to investigate further based on the information you provide and help negotiate a settlement. Even if it doesn't, the details may help if anyone else complains about the same firm. It is also possible to take builders to a small claims court if you have been left out of pocket. A woman was left fuming after her 'selfish' next door neighbour installed a satellite dish right outside her bedroom window blocking her view. Taking to TikTok, the upset woman, who appears to be from the UK, claimed her neighbour deliberately decided to place the dish in front of her window instead of his own. The clip, posted on @Seewara_xo, racked up more than 1.2 million views, with many viewers suggesting she may have grounds to take legal action against him. Words accompanying the video footage said: 'POV: Neighbour enters his selfish era and puts the satellite dish where you look out, not where he does.' The woman showed how her view of the garden was being partly blocked by the dish - in addition, her window could no longer open fully. The woman also provided a view from her garden, showing the proximity of the dish to her window. She then asked internet users if she was overreacting which sparked a debate online. In the caption she wrote: 'Is this normal or am I overreacting ?' One person wrote: 'If a neighbor attaches something to their house that extends over your property line without your permission, it's considered an encroachment.' Meanwhile, others suggested a more petty approach, saying she should try to block the signal. One person suggested: 'Ok, so here's what you'll do- put some tin foil on your window, across the whole pane. 'Then open it right across the satellite dish. He won't get any reception whatsoever, - then he can move it, his choice. This is level 1 petty. We have 52 stages remaining if needed….' Everyday punctuation marks from the simple full stop to the quotation mark now mean something totally different as Gen Z adapt them to form new meanings, experts have revealed. Recently it was revealed that the semicolon is at risk of dying out because its use is plummeting, and now younger generations are re-purposing the punctuation marks that endure so that they no longer mean what they used to. For instance, teenagers are more likely to use a full stop as a blunt gesture, rather than to simply signify the end of a sentence. Noël Wolf, a linguistic expert at Babbel, told MailOnline: 'We're seeing a real shift in how punctuation is being used in everyday communication, particularly among younger generations. 'Inverted commas, or quotation marks, have traditionally served a clear grammatical purpose: indicating direct speech or quoting another source. 'But in contemporary digital communication, especially on platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X, they're being repurposed.' It's also reflected in work by contemporary writers such as Sally Rooney who have done away with quotation marks in their novels, so that when you do see them, they're not there to indicate direct speech. Gen Z's take on punctuation... Quotation mark - Signals irony, sarcasm or emotional distance Dash - Used for emphasis, interjections or sudden tonal shifts Comma - Implemented to mimic speech patterns or pacing Exclamation mark - Used to add a friendly touch Full stop - Signals bluntness or finality Ellipses - Conveys hesitation, awkwardness or emotional nuance Source - Noël Wolf, linguistic and cultural expert at Babbel 'Gen Z is now frequently using quotation marks to signal irony, sarcasm or emotional distance - for example, writing I'm "fine" to imply the opposite of fine,' he explained. 'It's become a kind of punctuation-based body language.' While people might be quick to assume that Gen Z are loosening society's grip on grammatical conventions, Noel argued the opposite. 'This isn't about grammar falling apart, but a creative adaptation of it. Punctuation is still valued, but its function is evolving. 'In an age where much communication happens via short-form text; such as messages, comments and captions, younger generations are using punctuation to convey tone, nuance and intent in the absence of voice or facial cues.' The expert explained that the adaptations have come into place as a consequence of the internet. He said, 'The internet, of course, is a driving force, with informal digital spaces encouraging experimentation. What might once have been seen as 'incorrect' punctuation is now part of a new, expressive way of interacting online. 'This doesn't mean rules are vanishing, they're just shifting. Interestingly, many young people still appreciate the power of punctuation when clarity matters; for example, in academic writing or professional contexts. So, rather than seeing punctuation as dying out, we should see it as diversifying. 'Its role in helping us communicate clearly, emotionally and effectively is arguably more important than ever, as we are constantly navigating multiple modes of communication, from texts and tweets to emails and essays.' The expert explained that it's not just quotation marks undergoing a change in meaning, but also exclamation marks and ellipses. 'Other punctuation marks are undergoing similar shifts,' he said, adding, 'Full stops, once essential for sentence clarity, are increasingly interpreted in messaging contexts as signalling bluntness or finality. 'A simple reply like 'Okay.' can be read as passive-aggressive or cold, depending on the social context, which is a sharp contrast to the more friendly 'Okay!' 'Linguistically, this shows how punctuation is now carrying emotional and social meaning, not just serving a grammatical function. 'Ellipses (...), once used to indicate omitted text or a trailing thought, now often convey hesitation, awkwardness or emotional nuance, for example, 'I guess… we'll see.' Wolf explained that even basic forms of grammar, such as the comma, are also developing to have different meanings. He said, 'Even the humble comma is being manipulated to mimic speech patterns or pacing. 'For example, 'So, um, that happened,' the comma creates rhythm and mimics the cadence of spoken language.' Elsewhere, Gen Z are embracing dashes and maximising their use, according to the expert. He said, 'Meanwhile, dashes (-) are thriving as versatile punctuation for emphasis, interjections or sudden tonal shifts: 'She said she was 'fine' - and then blocked me.' 'Their growing popularity may even be influenced by tools like ChatGPT, which frequently rely on em dashes to signal tone shifts, pauses or emphasis in text.' Wolf concluded, 'What we're witnessing is a form of punctuational code-switching. In formal contexts, most people, including Gen Z, revert to conventional usage. But in digital spaces, punctuation becomes part of a rich, multimodal communicative system. 'Tone, intent and identity are all being conveyed through tiny textual signals. The rise of informal, digital-first writing styles has certainly influenced this shift. 'On platforms like X, where brevity is key or in WhatsApp chats, punctuation often carries emotional weight as much as syntactic structure. 'In this sense, we're seeing the emergence of a functional punctuation dialect - one that's intuitive, adaptive and highly expressive. 'So, far from fading into obsolescence, punctuation is thriving, just in new and sometimes unexpected ways. As always, language adapts to fit the needs of its users.' Meanwhile, Gen Z are also changing the way they use the emojji. In an attempt to confuse the older generations, Gen Z are ditching 'mainstream' emoji in favour of bizarre alternatives. 'For the predominantly younger-skewing 'chronically online,' riding the wave of emerging trends helps forge identity and create distance from the 'out-of-touch' older generations,' explained Emojipedia. 'In a culture shaped by brainrot, post-irony, and existential dread, avoiding the mainstream is a badge of honor. 'Creating underground memes and micro-viral moments that distinguish an in-the-know in-group from outsiders can be mini-milestones in establishing a generation's internet identity, leaving others on the outside feeling confused and out of the loop, often intentionally so.'
