8 Ramps, 16 Bottlenecks: Is Bengaluru's Tunnel Project Headed For A Jam? Know More
The DPR reveals that already packed spots like Hebbal Flyover, IISc, Maharani College Junction, Wilson Garden, and Hosur Road could witness even more snarls.
Bengaluru's much-hyped tunnel road project, stretching from Hebbal to Silk Board and costing around Rs 22,000 crore, is now under scrutiny.
Promoted as a fix for the city's infamous traffic snarls, this underground road may end up doing the opposite.
Backed strongly by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, the tunnel was meant to ease congestion. However, the final Detailed Project Report (DPR) reveals a worrying detail: the entry and exit ramps — just eight in total — could give rise to 16 new gridlock points, as per The new Indian Express.
Where Will the Trouble Begin?
The entry and exit ramps are planned in already clogged areas such as:
While the tunnel's core length is 16.68 km, users will actually travel close to 18.91 km one way — thanks to the ramp distances. Depending on where one starts or ends the journey, additional travel on surface roads could further extend the route beyond 19 km.
This defeats the whole purpose of faster travel and instead adds time, fuel, and frustration.
Rajkumar Dugar, founder of Citizens for Citizens (C4C), warns the tunnel could worsen traffic even for those who don't use it. 'New U-turns, sharper merges, and narrower roads will choke the city even more," he said.
Urban planner V Ravichandar also pointed out that entry/exit bottlenecks might cancel out any real time savings.

Duty Cuts On Large Petrol, Diesel Vehicles, High-Priced EVs Under FTA: All You Need To Know
Last Updated: Officially called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, it protects sensitive segments of the domestic automotive industry for mid and small cars and low-priced EVs India has provided duty concessions to the UK auto exporters only on large petrol and diesel vehicles as well as high-priced EVs under the free trade agreement signed between the two countries on Thursday. Officially called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), it protects sensitive segments of the domestic automotive industry especially mid and small cars and low-priced EVs, officials said. According to officials, there are no concessions on electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles in the first five years of the CETA, which was signed earlier in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer. Here's all you need to know: As per the CETA, tariffs on automotive imports will go from about 110 percent at present to 10 percent under quotas on both sides. The offered quota and duty reduction are more for the large engine capacity categories (above 3,000 cc petrol/2,500 cc diesel). A government official said this will ensure that the domestic sector has sufficient time to expand, innovate, and enhance global competitiveness in small (up to 1,500 cc) and mid segment (1,500-3,000 cc petrol/up to 2,500 cc diesel. The duty reduction to 10 percent will be done in over five years with quota. Out of quota duty reduction is 50 percent over 10 years. As per the details of the trade pact, the number of vehicles from ICE (internal combustion engine) engines will be deducted by the number of EV vehicles getting concessions from the sixth year to maintain the total quota volume of 37,000 units at the end of 15 years of duty concession. For vehicles priced below British Pound 40,000 (CIF), no market access is provided, ensuring complete protection for the mass-market EV segment in which India seeks global leadership. Market access in EV is given mostly in high-priced vehicles priced above British Pound 80,000 (CIF). 'India has secured market access to the tune of four times of its concession given to the UK on EV in the UK market," the official said, adding India has extended a structured and balanced market access offer to the UK in the automobile sector under the trade agreement. Think tank GTRI said this is India's first-ever auto tariff concession in any FTA, and is likely to trigger similar demands from Japan, European Union, South Korea, and the US. Founder Ajay Srivastava told PTI that India has opened a dedicated Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) for passenger cars from the UK. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. EaseMyTrip co-founder shares update on Bengaluru traffic project to ease jams
Prashant Pitti, co-founder of EaseMyTrip, who earlier pledged Rs 1 crore to help fix Bengaluru's traffic woes, has shared a major update on the a post on July 24, Pitti said he is confident of improving Bengaluru traffic by 25–30% within a year using artificial intelligence, Google Maps data, satellite imagery, and large-scale collaboration with public and private this month, Pitti announced the initiative on X, calling it the 'Bangalore Traffic Project.' Within just ten days, he met senior officials from Bengaluru Traffic Police, BBMP, City Police, the Google team, professors from IISc, scientists, road engineers, and entrepreneurs working on traffic solutions. 'All three newly appointed commissioners were very kind to invite me to showcase existing capabilities and collaborate to work together. For the first time we are bringing all key public and private players - to the same table,' Pitti said in his the first set of projects underway are traffic simulation models that can process millions of re-routing options based on real-time data from platforms like Uber, Ola, Rapido, and Google. Some of these companies have already agreed to share their data. The goal is to predict gridlocks before they happen and take corrective steps in advance to avoid traffic component is upgrading the existing government app used to report potholes.'I will take ownership of that app, to increase its scope (report illegal parking, broken signal, wrong side driving, water logging, broken vehicle, etc). I will also increase accountability and recognition by showcasing all the complaints lodged AND action-taken (along with time-stamp) publicly,' he added. Pitti is also working on a hyperlocal rain prediction system to help authorities plan road maintenance more efficiently. 'The government starts infrastructure work, and then it rains on that stretch, halting everything,' he explained. This new tool could also assist in fixing drainage issues before they escalate.A pilot project is already testing "Green Wave Signals"—a system to sync traffic lights so that vehicles can move in waves instead of stopping at every junction. If the pilot succeeds, the concept may be rolled out to those who argue that Bengaluru's traffic issues stem from infrastructure problems, Pitti said, 'If we keep waiting for better infra, we'll always be catching up with the West. There's plenty we can do to optimise what already exists.'He concluded with a call to action, asking citizens to join a WhatsApp community where they can report major traffic trouble spots. 'The more support we get, the more people and institutions we can bring in. I'm in it for the long haul. Are you?'- EndsMust Watch

India-UK Free Trade Deal To Make British Luxury Cars Cheaper
British luxury cars like Jaguar and Rolls-Royce may soon become cheaper in India after a new trade deal slashes import duties. On July 22, India and the United Kingdom officially concluded their Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which will make luxury British cars more affordable in India. The announcement was made by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this deal, the import duty on cars from the UK could drop from over 100 per cent to just 10 per cent, significantly reducing the cost of high-end vehicles. However, this lower tax will only apply to a certain number of cars, as there will be a quota. The exact number of vehicles allowed under this benefit hasn't been shared yet. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the news on social media, posting on X (formerly Twitter): 'In a historic milestone, India and the UK have successfully concluded an ambitious and mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement, along with a Double Contribution Convention." A new chapter begins today in the India–UK economic partnership! The signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) reflects our shared commitment to enhancing trade, driving inclusive growth and creating opportunities for farmers, women, youth, MSMEs, and… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) July 24, 2025 In addition to the FTA, both countries also concluded talks for the Double Contribution Convention Agreement. However, discussions are still ongoing for a proposed bilateral investment treaty, according to Reuters. The new FTA is expected to significantly boost trade between India and the UK by 2030. Which British Cars Could Get Cheaper? The UK is home to some of the world's most well-known luxury car brands, such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, and Mini. Over the past few years, the demand for ultra-luxury vehicles in India has increased, especially among wealthy buyers and younger consumers. Most of these cars are currently brought into India as Completely Built Units (CBUs), meaning they are fully assembled before arriving. This usually attracts very high import taxes. But with the new FTA in place, even these fully built imported cars will be available at lower prices, although only a limited number will be eligible for the tax cut, based on the quota. With this agreement, more British cars are expected to enter the Indian market, and consumers may now be able to purchase them at more affordable prices than before. This move could boost luxury car sales and benefit both Indian buyers and UK car manufacturers. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
