IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Under grey skies, Akash Deep shines bright
Birmingham:
Akash Deep tends to get excited at the prospect of representing the country and playing on the biggest stage, getting to run in and bowl at venues he has only heard of in stories while growing up.
Last Sept, ahead of a Test match against Bangladesh, he said he was thrilled to be playing a match at Green Park in Kanpur, since it was the first stadium he had ever heard of. Similarly, he had pre-conceived notions about traditional bowling conditions here in England.
'I'd imagined that I'd get conditions where the ball swings and seams,' Akash had said after his four-wicket haul in the first innings here at Edgbaston.

Hailing from a small town in
Bihar
, Akash Deep sure has come a long way. On Sunday, when proceedings began after lunch on Day 5, the announcer at the ground mentioned Akash by name. Immediately, the Indian fans — who comfortably outnumbered the England supporters — started chanting his name wildly.
After his match-winning 10-wicket haul in the second Test, the humble, small-town boy is the toast of
Indian cricket
at one of the most celebrated venues in the world.

Perhaps Akash Deep's humility is what helps him stay flexible and be effective in varied conditions. 'The coaches have always encouraged me. They tell me that even I don't realise the things I am capable of,' Akash said.
'Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere': Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win
When he found out that conditions in England this summer didn't exactly resemble the stories, Akash Deep immediately decided to stick to his natural lines and lengths. He has enough miles in his legs at the domestic level and that showed as he ran in tirelessly, seamlessly, in both innings here.
'I trusted my experience and stuck to the line and lengths that I bowled in India. On these kinds of pitches, you need to be disciplined.,' Akash said.
He consistently out-bowled everyone on this relatively docile Edgbaston track and kept coming at the batters. It's remarkable considering he was off-colour in the IPL following a side injury and subsequently carried a niggle while travelling with the India 'A' team preceding this Test series.
'Akash is an attacking bowler who asks questions by bowling at the stumps a lot. That's one of the golden rules here in England. Coming back from injury and seeing him running in and bowling at a high pace is a a nice sign for us,' India's bowling coach
Morne Morkel
said after Akash Deep produced a dream spell to get rid of the in-form Ben Duckett and Joe Root late on the fourth day on Saturday.
Not surprisingly, he got the ball rolling immediately on the final morning by knocking over
Ollie Pope
, followed by trapping Harry Brook in front of the stumps with balls that jagged back remarkably off the seam.
For now, Akash Deep is on a roll. India will be hoping for more such performances from him in this series.

‘I saw Virat Kohli crying in the bathroom': Chahal lifts lid on when India star broke down and 'had tears in his eyes'
Yuzvendra Chahal's recent interview on a YouTube podcast show with Raj Shamani has been grabbing eyeballs. The India spinner spoke on a variety of topics, and much of the attention fell on his divorce saga. He opened up about what went wrong in their five-year marriage which ended in divorce recently. Yuzvendra Chahal spoke about the former India captain's heartbreaking moment. But Chahal also reflected significantly on his international career, and spoke about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, ending up comparing their captaincy on the podcast. 'I love how Rohit bhaiya carries himself on the ground. He's a very good captain. With Virat bhaiya, it's the energy he brings, the same energy every day. It will only go up and never down. Same energy. Every day,' he said. Yuzvendra Chahal lifts lid on when he say Virat Kohli 'crying in the bathroom' Chahal also spoke about India's heartbreaking 2019 World Cup semi-final exit at the hands of New Zealand, where the match stretched to the reserve day. The host asked Chahal if he had ever seen Kohli cry, and pointed out the recent IPL 2025 final, where the batter was in tears after RCB wn the title. '2019 World Cup, I saw him crying in the bathroom,' he said. 'And then I was the last batter, when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes. In 2019, I saw everyone crying in the bathroom,' he added, revealing how shellshocked the Indian team were on that day. During his interview, Chahal revealed that divorce talks with Dhanashree had been going on for sometime, but it wasn't mentioned to the public. Chahal was also accused of cheating on Dhanashree, and the spinner revealed that it was a lie, and he never cheated in his entire life. 'I think when my divorce happened, people alleged me of being a cheater. I have never cheated in my life. I am not that kind of a person. You won't find anyone more loyal than me. I think from my heart for my closed ones, always. I do not demand, I always give. When people don't know anything, but they keep blaming me, so you start thinking [otherwise],' he said.

Ricky Ponting would have punched Akash Deep had India pacer given him a Ben Duckett-like send-off: ‘You don't see that…'
Not always do you see a bowler getting severely criticised for his arm around an opposition batter, that too with a smile on his face. Then again, not often does a bowler do that immediately after dismissing him in a hard-fought series. The bowler in question here is India pacer Akash Deep. The batter to receive Akash Deep's arm was Ben Duckett. India's Akash Deep reacts with England's Ben Duckett after taking his wicket(Action Images via Reuters) It happened in the 13th over of the England innings when Duckett, in his attempt to play another reverse ramp, got an outside edge to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This was the fourth time Duckett was dismissed by Akash Deep but for the first time, it was after the left-hander had given a fair bit of tap to the Indian pacer. Duckett hit four fours and a six off Akash Deep in his blazing innings of 43 off 38 balls before getting dismissed. Akash Deep had the last laugh for sure but what he did after getting the wicket of Duckett became a talking point. The Indian pacer wrapped his arm around Duckett's shoulder and had a few words of wisdom, which were not received well by former cricketers Ricky Ponting, Michael Atherton and Dinesh Karthik. Ponting, in fact, agreed that he wouldn't have shied away from landing a right hook if Akash Deep had done something similar to him during his playing days. "I can think of a few batsmen down the years that would take umbrage at this, and I'm looking very much in your direction. That would have been a Ponting right hook, wouldn't it?" asked sports presenter Ian Warnd in a Sky Sports Lunch break show on Day 2. "Probably yeah, probably," replied Ponting. Thankfully, Duckett didn't see things like Ponting. The England opener took Akash Deep's send-off rather sprotingly before walking off. Ponting said his respect for Duckett grew after seeing how the attacking opener handled things after getting dismissed. "Although I mean, when I saw it, I just thought they must have been mates or played against each other somewhere or together. I would like to have something like that. I mean, you don't see that every day, maybe in a local park game or not in a test match that's been played as fiercely as this series has been played. I love the way that Ben Duckett plays his cricket. I think I like him more now to not to be able to react to that," Ponting added. Yashasvi Jaiswal's fortuitous half-century turned India's slender first-innings deficit into a 52-run lead on a dramatic second day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. On a pitch offering unpredictable bounce, 15 wickets fell on Friday as bowlers held sway. India, resuming at 219-7, added just five runs in the morning to be bowled out for 224. England responded with an explosive start, racing to 100 in just 13 overs, but collapsed to 247 all out, taking a slim 23-run lead. Jaiswal, dropped twice, counterattacked with an unbeaten 51 off 49 balls to lift India to 75-2 before bad light ended play early. With England leading the series 2-1, both sides have a strong chance, as a result, it now looks likely in the series decider.

The Oscar-nominated actress, who stunned fans in three elegant gowns during their wedding weekend at the picturesque San Ysidro Ranch, has been making wellness a personal priority off the red carpet. Hailee Steinfeld flexes her fitness grind in latest photos before Bills' big year Even with a demanding schedule, Hailee Steinfeld remains deeply committed to taking care of her body and mind. In her recent Beau Society newsletter, she described emerging from a whirlwind trip to New York City, yet still ensuring her workouts weren't sacrificed. 'I work out to stay fit, but it's almost the last reason I do it anymore,' she wrote candidly. 'I love it because it's the only time of day that I can check out entirely. ' Her approach isn't simply about staying camera-ready — it's about emotional resilience and self-care. The 28-year-old actress, who starred in Sinners, emphasized the mental clarity her workouts provide. 'We often work out early so we finish before the rush of the day sets in. Hailee wrote, 'I never get tired of hearing my dad talk about the thing he loves most in this world: wellbeing.' That mindset has shifted with wisdom and time. 'I don't do that anymore because I enjoy sweets and snacks, and the company,' she admitted. But a quote from her father helped anchor this change: 'You can't change your body overnight, and you can't mess it up overnight either.'
