Backpacker lost in Wheatbelt lands back home in Germany

Backpacker Carolina Wilga has flown back home to Germany in business class, spotted being pushed in a wheelchair to a hospital.
German newspaper BILD reported that the 26-year-old touched down at Düsseldorf Airport after a stop-over in Dubai on Sunday afternoon local time — a 20-hour journey from Perth.
Ms Wilga was assisted by medical personnel in business class during the plane journey.
After arriving at Düsseldorf, she was taken in a civilian ambulance to the Evangelical Hospital in Castrop-Rauxel.
She was met by a nurse who, with the assistance of bodyguards, helped Ms Wilga into a wheelchair. A man was seen carrying an orange trekking backpack towards Ms Wilga. The backpacker, who survived nearly two weeks lost in the West Australian outback, farewelled Perth in a heartwarming Instagram post at the weekend.
'Reunion with the ocean and a great goodbye to Perth with loooots of hugs ❤️ love you all,' she captioned the since deleted post.
She shared several photos of her time in the hospital — at Cottesloe Beach with friends and last Monday's front page of The West Australian that featured her ordeal.
Ms Wilga was lost for 12 days by herself in the Wheatbelt in July, sparking a missing persons search that had the entire country on alert.
She had last been seen on June 29, travelling through Beacon, before she was found alive by a passing motorist on July 11.
Ms Wilga's bogged Misubishi Delica van was found by police just one day before her rescue.
After she met with police, the young traveller was flown to Perth and admitted to Fiona Stanley Hospital dehydrated, traumatised and 12kg lighter.
Ms Wilga was discharged on Wednesday after five days recovering in hospital.

Councillor Jane Agirtan turns her sights on CBD columnist

Our item about independent Kingston councillor (and former Liberal Party member) Jane Agirtan receiving back pay after her council suspension was rescinded, hit a nerve with one reader … Jane Agirtan herself. Regular readers will recall the recent news Agirtan was allowed back on council after escaping conviction in Moorabbin Magistrates' Court. A magistrate ordered that the Liberal-turned-independent councillor make a $2000 donation to the Royal Children's Hospital as punishment for breaching an intervention order. Agirtan was in hot water after she allegedly doxxed a lawyer who had posted anonymous criticism of her online. The breach occurred when the post in question was not removed within 24 hours as per a court order. After our item, which detailed that Agirtan had exposed the lawyer's name and work firm, and urged her followers to help the lawyer overcome their 'Aunty Jane derangement syndrome', the councillor and tax manager responded in a social media post by … doxxing your columnist in an Instagram post. Loading 'Can't talk, too busy collecting backpay… and receipts,' Agirtan wrote, with a screenshot of our attempts to reach out. She followed up with what we took was criticism of our attempts to get in contact with her (none of which were responded to). 'Frantically ringing my council phone like it's Triple J's Hottest 100 vote line is giving … unpaid intern,' she wrote over a screenshot of this columnist's phone number.

Car flies into barn roof after veering into yard and hitting little boy in Germany

Several people have been injured by a car veering off a road, hitting a seven-year-old boy on a trampoline and flying into a barn roof on its side. The car first collided with a parked vehicle, broke through a hedge and drove into a garden where it hit the boy on Sunday in the town of Bohmte, in northwestern Germany. The car then went over uneven ground and it was apparently catapulted into the air and ended up crashing into the roof of a neighbouring barn about 3m off the ground. The boy was seriously injured, German Police said. The 42-year-old driver only suffered minor injuries, but his wife was seriously injured. Their two sons, aged 11 and 12, and a 13-year-old passenger were also in the car and suffered only minor injuries. Dozens of firefighters, as well as a dozen ambulances and two rescue helicopters were among the emergency services deployed in response. Images from the scene showed rescuers cutting through the roof, and wreckage of a playground that the car ran through. The car had to be removed from the roof with a crane and was carted away by police. An investigation is underway.
