Real reason Natalie Portman quit US to live in France

Courier-Mail19-05-2025
Natalie Portman has shed light on her decision to leave the US and move to France, where she is raising her family.
The Oscar winner ditched Los Angeles and moved to Paris when her then-husband Benjamin Millepied accepted a job as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
The 'Black Swan' actress shares two children, Aleph, 13, and Amalia, 8, with Millepied.
Speaking with Marie Claire, Portman said Paris was 'one of the most exciting places to be in the world,' while praising the city's impressive art scene.
'It's really central in terms of the arts. It feels like things are happening in L.A., you know?' she said.
'New York is more where art is bought than where art is made.
'When Ben asked me if I wanted to go to Paris, I freaked. Everyone dreams of living in Paris.'

The couple ended up calling it quits after Millepied had an alleged affair with a 25-year-old climate activist named Camille Étienne.
The New York native stayed in Europe following the break-up with Millepied, revealing the Parisians understand her boundaries.
'They're very good at privacy here,' she told Net-a-Porter.
'I feel like the biggest compliment is 'elle est très discrète' ['she is very discreet'].'
The Hollywood starlet said she also enjoys soaking up all the culture the European city has to offer.
'Even when it's cold and grey, there's always some incredible exhibit or concert or dinner party or writers in town; something fascinating and stimulating happening … and the frequent vacations are so clutch!' she said.
The 43-year-old pushed back on a stereotype that Parisians are 'rude', pointing out the 'weird' social differences between the US and France.
'I find the people here are actually incredibly friendly – you just have to know how to interact, so that we're not the ones being rude,' she said.
'Now, when I go back to the US, I'm like, oh, I would go into a store and not say hello to everyone there? It's weird.'
'I think we have an assumption that Western cultures are all the same, and kind of evened out by all this pop culture that everyone consumes. It's not true: it's extremely specific here.'
However, Portman has not cut all ties with the US.
The 'Star Wars' actress retained residence in Los Feliz, Los Angeles she purchased in 2009 for $US3.3 million.
Eight years later, Portman purchased a second California property in Montecito, which she picked up for $US6.5 million in June 2017.
However, she quietly offloaded the home in an off-market deal in 2021 for $US8 million after relocating to France.
According to Realtor, the sale netted the 'V for Vendetta' star a tidy profit, with $US1.5 million more than she bought it for.
Portman's career has continued since she moved to Europe.
The actress racked up numerous credits since she relocated in 2014, including roles in Marvel's blockbuster 'Avengers' series.
She'll make her next appearance in the Guy Ritchie-directed heist movie, 'Fountain of Youth,' in which she stars alongside John Krasinski.

Ex-MasterChef Australia judge George Calombaris opens up about alcohol struggles and former business woes

Former MasterChef Australia judge and hospitality entrepreneur George Calombaris has spoken of his battle with alcohol addiction after a series of scandals rocked his empire. Appearing on the podcast Ouzo Talk, Calombaris detailed his spiral after his MAdE Establishment group had payroll issues, underpaying staff more than $7 million over a six year period. The celebrity chef and Melbourne personality paid back all the staff's wages and superannuation, including a fine of $200,000. It wasn't the only controversy to snag the disgraced star, in 2017 he was charged with assault following an altercation with a fan at the A-League grand final. The conviction was overturned on appeal and the judge imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond while striking the criminal conviction from his permanent record. Calombaris told the podcast it had been a difficult time. 'It was six months of pain you know, I had to go in and out of court three times, hire one of the best KC's of the time,' he said. It was also around this period that he and fellow MasterChef judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan left the Channel 10 show due to contract negotiation breakdowns. Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Calombaris found himself at rock bottom. 'After COVID hit, I'm suddenly sitting in Melbourne, which is shut for now two years, sitting with my pyjamas on … looking at my phone going there's no emails, there's nothing to do (and I) start drinking daily,' he said. The 46-year-old told of how around three months in, he got in his car and drove down the road, and was found by his brother 'pissed as a fart'. 'And that was a moment, he really slapped it out of me and went enough is enough.' But, it appears that the setbacks have not dampened the entrepreneurial spirit in Calombaris as he moved his successful venture Gazi from Melbourne to Sydney, where it looks likely to stay. 'Sydney's truly an international city, I've travelled everywhere in the world with my job and Sydney's in the top five cities in the world,' he said. 'I feel that there's this buzz here and I'm a part of this buzz and we've got lots of good plans here.'

Donald Trump includes himself in Club World Cup trophy celebration with Chelsea

Cole Palmer has produced a scintillating first-half masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris St Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided Club World Cup final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Strangely though, it was US President Donald Trump who took centre stage during the trophy presentation. The 79-year-old put medals around the players' necks and handed trophy over to the EPL club, at which point it seemed a natural time for him to exit stage left — literally. Palmer appeared to say something in Trump's direction as FIFA boss Giovanni Infantino attempted to lead the President away from the stage. But Trump stayed, including himself in the iconic trophy lift, which set social media alight. 'Donald Trump has celebrated more international trophies than Arsenal,' one person quipped. 'Reece James asking Donald Trump 'are you gonna leave' and Trump just not moving for the trophy lift is mental,' another said. 'This is a simulation we are living in we now have Chelsea trophy lift pics with Donald Trump in the middle celebrating with the team,' an incredulous third joked. Back on the field, Palmer scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked. Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto. While his initial effort was blocked by Mendes, Gusto collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post. Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th-minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner. Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG's misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG's players grew in frustration as the match progressed. The encounter turned into an ill-tempered match at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea's players went to celebrate with their fans. 'It's a great feeling. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it's good,' Palmer told DAZN. 'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.' Chelsea arrived in the US after winning Europe's third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish. Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a 'game of chess' against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but it was a quick checkmate for the Italian who gave a tactical masterclass. Maresca's team employed a relentless high press and emulated the tactics used by Brazilian outfit Botafogo, who had beaten PSG 1-0 in the group stage and were the only team to score against Luis Enrique's side in the previous eight games. Their press caused PSG all sorts of trouble and when Maresca's side couldn't regain possession, they sat deep, frustrating the European champions, who were unable to play their usual game. The direct and pacey football we had become used to seeing from PSG was Chelsea's game on Sunday, with Palmer, Gusto and Joao Pedro picking apart the PSG defence, especially on the left side. Other than an early golden opportunity for PSG's Desire Doue that was wasted, the first half was all Chelsea's and, after they opened their three-goal lead, the French side could never recover.

Fashion fault: The Wimbledon rule ignored by Princess Catherine

A controversial error at the Wimbledon men's singles final by the usually faultless Princess Catherine could force the hand of fashion umpires. At the women's singles final Catherine's cream dress from Self-Portrait, accessorised with a tote from Anya Hindmarch (not from the handbag designer's collection for Woolworths supermarkets) was a flawless example of day dressing. The streamlined silhouette was repeated at the men's final in a cornflower blue dress by Roksanda, where Catherine presented the winner's trophy to Jannik Sinner, but it was her choice of accessory that challenged tennis club etiquette. Catherine arrived at Wimbledon clutching a wide-brimmed, ribbon-trimmed hat from LK Bennett. During the final, Catherine wore the hat when the sun hit the royal box, while waving a fan to combat the effects of the London heatwave. Having set the tone, Catherine was joined by Australian Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman, covering up in a panama hat from Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli. Kidman's neighbour in the royal box, outgoing US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, relied on her signature bob and sunglasses for sun protection. Loading The dress guide for the royal box at Wimbledon advises: 'Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them.' This is the second time that Catherine has ignored the advice of the club, which she became patron of in 2016. In 2022, in a yellow dress from Roksanda, the Princess of Wales also wore the LK Bennett straw hat. 'Rules like not wearing hats are outdated and dangerous,' says Australian model Deborah Hutton, who founded the sun smart hat collection Canopy Bay in 2021, following her own experiences with skin cancer. 'Melanoma rates are on the rise in the UK. At the tennis the sun is baking you. It's insanity not to wear a hat of some description.'
