1 dead, 1 missing, 1 swam to shore after canoe flips in Upper Peninsula
Three individuals were on the water in Copper Harbor in the Upper Peninsula when their boat flipped, according to Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office on Facebook. One individual made it to shore and contacted 911 around 3:50 a.m.
Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office, Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor Fire, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police dive team and U.S. Coast Guard with helicopters responded to the emergency, according to Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office.

The body of one person was recovered, while the other was unaccounted for as of last night, when the search and recovery efforts paused due to safety and operational considerations, according to Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office.
Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office said it and its partner agencies will continue the search for the third person today Sunday, June 29.
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the post says. "Thank you to all of the dedicated personnel and partner agencies working tirelessly on this challenging operation."
The sheriff's office asked the public to avoid the area and to honor the privacy of the families affected, the Facebook post also says.
Copper Harbor is at the top of Michigan's U.P. across Lake Superior from Isle Royale National Park.

'So much life left to live': Slaying of 16-year-old in Abbeydale remains under investigation
The 16-year-old Calgary boy found dead in Abbeydale was described by family friends as 'a light to everyone who knew him.' Following his death, which police have deemed to be a homicide, Calgary Search and Rescue teams have been combing through the community in search of evidence linked to his killing. Around 1:20 a.m. on Friday, Calgary police responded to an incident along the 300 block of Abergale Drive N.E. Upon their arrival, officers located a deceased teenage male who was later identified as Carter Spivak-Villeneuve. As of Saturday afternoon, acting Staff Sgt. Derek MacNaughton of the Calgary police operations intelligence group said the investigation is still in its early stages. 'There's no threat to the public, most of the police have left the area, and more updates will come through our media and (public affairs) sections,' he said. Abbeydale residents spoke with Postmedia about the homicide but wanted to remain anonymous in the event the incident was gang-related. 'It's just sad,' one resident said. 'I was born and raised in this community, and I've watched it over the years … but it's sad that someone passed away.' A homeowner in the area where the incident took place said he was out of town when it happened. Upon his return, he was approached by Calgary police for footage from his cameras. 'My grandson said (the victim) was actually in our house when they were younger,' said the homeowner. 'He said he hasn't seen him in three years, and I think he said he lived here in Abbeydale.' On Friday, another neighbour told Postmedia that she heard three gunshots sometime after midnight. An online fundraiser has been started by friends on behalf of the victim's family to support them following the loss of their son, with a goal of raising $22,000. 'Carter was more than just a teenager — he was a son, a brother, a nephew, a cousin, a friend and grandchild and a light to everyone who knew him,' said a written appeal on the fundraising page. 'Carter had so much life left to live and love left to give.' At this point, members of the family were not ready to make any public comment. 'What I can say is that the parents are trying to take this time to navigate this difficult loss,' said one of the organizers of the fundraiser. 'Carter was a sweet boy who just wanted to be loved by everyone.' After enough money has been raised, a private service will be held for Spivak-Villeneuve, the organizer said.

Michigan man sentenced for traveling with explosive devices to Massachusetts
A 31-year-old man has been sentenced for traveling with several explosive devices from Michigan to Massachusetts, federal officials said on Friday. A judge sentenced Luke Isaac Terpstra to three years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan. He pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered destructive device in April. Between late summer and early fall of 2023, Terpestra built several improvised explosive devices, also known as IEDs, the attorney's office said. In September of that same year, he traveled from Grant, Michigan, to Salem, Massachusetts, with the devices, multiple firearms and ammunition. One IED had coins attached to its side, while another had rifle ammunition attached. Both devices had a piece of cannon fuse on them, according to the attorney's office. Terpstra said he built the IEDs because he wanted to destroy a Satanic Temple by setting it on fire, officials said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation worked with the Grant Police Department, Kent County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police on the case. "The sentence in this case is significant and it reinforces that individuals who build bombs with the intent to injure innocent civilians and destroy property will be held accountable," U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey said in a news release on Friday.

Warren man charged with possessing child sexually abusive material
A 61-year-old Warren, Michigan, man is accused of possessing and sharing multiple images of child sexually abusive material, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said Friday. Michael Cristini is charged with three counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material, three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material and six counts of using a computer to commit a crime, court records show. He was arraigned on Friday at the 37th District Court in Warren. The prosecutor's office alleges that Cristini possessed and shared the child sexually abusive material around May 6. His bond is set at $500,000 cash or surety, according to court records. If released, Cristini won't be able to use the internet or a computer, can't have weapons, drugs or alcohol and will be required to wear a GPS tether. "The charges brought today represent some of the most serious offenses under the law involving the exploitation of children," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in a news release on Friday. A probable cause conference for Cristini is scheduled for Aug. 15, followed by a preliminary exam on Aug. 21.
