'Fairytale' city is also one of the 'cheapest' holiday locations in the UK

Daily Mirror14-05-2025
Experts from Holiday Extras named a 'fairytale' UK city as one of the most affordable destinations for a staycation in 2024 - and Brits can even bag bargain hotel stays
Nestled within ancient city walls, historic York is renowned for its Roman heritage, eerie encounters, and charming uneven Shambles. According to experts from Holiday Extras, it's a city that seems like it could be plucked straight from the "pages of a dark fairytale", yet it's also a place where Brits can enjoy a budget-friendly city break this year.
York offers a wide range of options, including high-end hotels and upscale restaurants. However, there are opportunities to cut back on expenses. The city is easily accessible by train, thanks to the bustling York station. Booking in advance or using a railcard can reduce costs, with train fares available for as little as £30.

In terms of budget accommodations, booking in advance and choosing off-peak times can result in significant savings. Most hotels operate on a supply-and-demand basis, which means they increase prices during peak times.

Budget-friendly hotels such as Premier Inn offer affordable options in the city. Premier Inn has six locations that range from the city centre to the outskirts of York, reports the Express.
Based on a quick search, Premier Inn's York City (Blossom St North) hotel has availability in September, with approximately £67 per night. If two people share a room the cost would be £33.5 per person per night.
York boasts a treasure trove of B&Bs, ranging from chic boutique stays to wallet-friendly accommodations. Kayak's latest figures reveal that some of the most affordable B&Bs can be found from just £52 per night.
The city is steeped in history, offering a plethora of ancient sites and museums at no cost. The National Railway Museum, delving into York's railway heritage, welcomes visitors free of charge – an ideal outing for families.
Art enthusiasts will be thrilled to discover that York Art Gallery's permanent collections are accessible without an entry fee, including two galleries dedicated to the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA).

Behind the gallery, guests can meander through the Artists Garden and Edible Wood, then venture out to the stunning York Museum Gardens.
York is dotted with numerous medieval churches throughout its centre, many open for daytime exploration. Visit York recommends St Michael le Belfrey in the heart of the city and Holy Trinity, nestled behind Goodramgate's shops in a verdant retreat.
For those keen on discovering York's narrative on foot, Visit York's Visitor Information Centre provides a variety of self-guided walking tours.
"Many cover hidden histories and niche interests in the city and are perfect for experiencing the city in a different light at your own pace," says Visit York.

As well as strong gusts, torrential rain is also expected to fall across huge sections of the country. Scottish coastlines and high ground may even see wind gusts of up to 85mph. A yellow wind warning has been issued for Scotland, Northern England, Northern Ireland, and north Wales on Monday. The warning is expected to stay in force until 6am on Tuesday. "Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties," said the weather agency. Brits have also been warned of property damage such as "tiles blown from roofs" and risk of injury from "flying debris". "Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage," the warning added. Disruption to public transport services and delays on the roads are also predicted. The strong winds will first begin to ease in the west on late Monday, but remain very strong until early Tuesday in the east. Ireland set for major weather shakeup over Bank Holiday as storm to bring 'unseasonably' high winds & potential warnings Matthew Lehnert, a Met Office Chief Meteorologist, said: 'Across the warning area, many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40-50mph, with 60-70mph more likely at higher elevations and around exposed coasts in Scotland. "There is a small chance that some locations here could even record gusts of 85mph.' A spokesperson for the weather agency added on X: "Storm Floris has been named. "Unseasonably strong winds, gales in the north, locally severe and accompanied by heavy rain. Disruption possible." RAC breakdown service's Rod Dennis said: 'This unseasonable bout of stormy weather will mean drivers in the north and west of the UK need to take extra care at the start of next week. 'It's the height of the holiday season, so those towing trailers and caravans, as well as those with roof and tent boxes, must ensure their loads are properly secured.' He advised motorists driver slower in poor conditions and leave later if the weather is too bad. The expert also urged drivers to avoid exposed highland and coastal routes. Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of this Storm Naming season. It comes after Storm Éowyn which hit in late January and sparked several weather warnings. Gusts of 100mph were recorded at Drumalbin in Scotland, the Met Office said. 4 Most of the country will be affected by the brutal weather 4 The weather is unseasonable for this time of year Credit: LNP

UK holidaymakers 'living like locals' want a more unique travel experience

A study of 2,000 adults found the vast majority try and 'live like a local' when abroad, with priorities now more focused on creating unique experiences rather than seeing the main sights UK holidaymakers are searching for better ways to have a more 'authentic' experience while on holiday, rather than relying on visits to popular tourist hotspots. Research shows more than three quarters of holidaymakers attempt to 'live like a local' when they go abroad as priorities shift towards creating more unique experiences. ‌ To do this, travellers are turning to locals for advice on dining recommendations to make sure they find the best options. They study shows travellers are also switching up their shopping habits, choosing to visit local grocery stores instead of familiar chains. Others are also choosing to cycle or walk rather than use public transport to better explore the area. ‌ ‌ Nearly half of British holidaymakers on the search for a more local experience enjoy exploring smaller towns and villages, or browsing neighbourhood markets to escape the usual tourist traps. It comes after sunbed wars see Brits forced to queue for 'over an hour' just to get to the pool. British man claimed 'I moved from UK to Benidorm – price of a pint and Full English left me floored' ‌ The study was commissioned by Skyscanner, which has developed a Road Trip Planner to assist travellers in uncovering local hidden treasures. Laura Lindsay, travel trends and destination expert for the brand, said: "There's something truly special about stepping off the tourist trail and embracing the pace, traditions, and tastes of local life. "Living like a local adds depth and colour to your holiday and creates a genuine connection with the destination. It's not just more rewarding - it's often more fun, too." ‌ The research suggests that holidaymakers strive to 'live like a local' not only for a more authentic experience – 35 per cent said it helps them find the best spots for food and drink – but also because they believe it's more respectful, with a third stating they enjoy supporting the local economy. Over four in 10 travellers are more inclined to try and 'live like a local' on holiday now than they were five years ago, possibly due to the influence of social media. Half of the holidaymakers surveyed said that social media has made it easier to discover hidden gems off the beaten path while on holiday. ‌ When venturing beyond typical tourist areas, two thirds said they were taken aback by how different a country or place felt. Levelling up their 'local experience' a quarter of holidaymakers have specifically chosen accommodation because it resembled somewhere a local resident would live. However, there are still certain obstacles prevent tourists from experiencing a true local lifestyle on their holidays. As expected, language barriers were a significant issue, followed by a lack of confidence or uncertainty about where to begin. Meanwhile, the survey revealed that discovering new foods and flavours is the top priority for travellers, although 36 per cent simply yearn for a few moments of tranquillity. To achieve this, 27 per cent prefer to hire a car for a more authentic local holiday experience, as it provides them with greater freedom to explore, be more independent and make spontaneous discoveries. Laura Lindsay, from Skyscanner, added: "Living like a local doesn't have to mean going completely off-grid - it's about making small, intentional choices that enrich your travel. "And best of all, it helps support the communities you visit, from independent businesses to artisans and family-run restaurants. It's a win for travellers and locals alike."

New £11.7billion bridge set to connect one of Europe's most beautiful islands to the mainland for the first time

Plus, how to get there now from the UK in under three hours BRIDGE THE GAP New £11.7billion bridge set to connect one of Europe's most beautiful islands to the mainland for the first time Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A HUGE new 2.2mile bridge connecting a beautiful European island to the mainland is to finally get the go-ahead. The plan to link Sicily with mainland Italy has been on the cards for years and now, the Italian government is expected to give the green light next week. The Strait of Messina Bridge is something that has actually been talked about since the Roman times, but has never come to fruition. It came very close to becoming a reality back in 2009, but was stopped in 2013 when the company created to oversee its construction closed down. Talking to Reuters, a source said the Italian government is expected to give the go-ahead for the project next week. The source added that the meeting of the Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS) to approve the bridge had yet to be scheduled but was expected to take place by August 7. The bridge will be costly, and the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has set aside €13.5 billion (£11.7 billion) for the project. Once it's finished, the Strait of Messina Bridge will be the longest suspension bridge in the world. It will be 2.2 miles long and designed to withstand earthquakes and strong winds. The project isn't going to be a quick build though as it's estimated it won't be completed until 2032. Currently, to get to and from Sicily to the Calabria region, travellers have to get on a ferry, take a train, or plane. Discover Europe's Secret Isles: Top 8 Underrated Destinations 4 Sicily has beautiful beaches and lots of history Credit: Alamy A regular ferry route operates between Messina in Sicily and Reggio Calabria in Calabria, and it takes around 30 minutes to do the crossing. You can also get a train from Sicily direct to Rome and Naples that boards its own ferry. The journey takes between eight and 12 hours depending on the starting city. To reach the island by plane, visitors can fly from Milan, Rome, Venice, Bologna and Verona. From the UK, you can fly directly to the island from London and Bristol and be there in under three hours. Sicily is one of Europe's most ancient inhabited islands and is now home to around five million people. Often named one of the world's most beautiful islands (most recently by Conde Nast Traveler), the most popular cities on the island are Palermo and Catania. One writer who visited Palermo delved deep into the island's mafia past and discovered a striking cathedral, food markets and beautiful sandy beaches. Another writer went to Catania taking a look at its Hollywood history, found the best views and tasted delicious desserts. For an Italian escape, here's a Mediterranean island that Brits don't know about with spectacular beaches and it's loved by Italians. And another tiny Italian island set to be 'turned into an oasis' to escape hoards of tourists.
