UK holidaymakers 'living like locals' want a more unique travel experience

A study of 2,000 adults found the vast majority try and 'live like a local' when abroad, with priorities now more focused on creating unique experiences rather than seeing the main sights
UK holidaymakers are searching for better ways to have a more 'authentic' experience while on holiday, rather than relying on visits to popular tourist hotspots. Research shows more than three quarters of holidaymakers attempt to 'live like a local' when they go abroad as priorities shift towards creating more unique experiences.

To do this, travellers are turning to locals for advice on dining recommendations to make sure they find the best options. They study shows travellers are also switching up their shopping habits, choosing to visit local grocery stores instead of familiar chains. Others are also choosing to cycle or walk rather than use public transport to better explore the area.


Nearly half of British holidaymakers on the search for a more local experience enjoy exploring smaller towns and villages, or browsing neighbourhood markets to escape the usual tourist traps. It comes after sunbed wars see Brits forced to queue for 'over an hour' just to get to the pool.

The study was commissioned by Skyscanner, which has developed a Road Trip Planner to assist travellers in uncovering local hidden treasures.
Laura Lindsay, travel trends and destination expert for the brand, said: "There's something truly special about stepping off the tourist trail and embracing the pace, traditions, and tastes of local life.
"Living like a local adds depth and colour to your holiday and creates a genuine connection with the destination. It's not just more rewarding - it's often more fun, too."

The research suggests that holidaymakers strive to 'live like a local' not only for a more authentic experience – 35 per cent said it helps them find the best spots for food and drink – but also because they believe it's more respectful, with a third stating they enjoy supporting the local economy.
Over four in 10 travellers are more inclined to try and 'live like a local' on holiday now than they were five years ago, possibly due to the influence of social media. Half of the holidaymakers surveyed said that social media has made it easier to discover hidden gems off the beaten path while on holiday.

When venturing beyond typical tourist areas, two thirds said they were taken aback by how different a country or place felt. Levelling up their 'local experience' a quarter of holidaymakers have specifically chosen accommodation because it resembled somewhere a local resident would live.
However, there are still certain obstacles prevent tourists from experiencing a true local lifestyle on their holidays. As expected, language barriers were a significant issue, followed by a lack of confidence or uncertainty about where to begin.
Meanwhile, the survey revealed that discovering new foods and flavours is the top priority for travellers, although 36 per cent simply yearn for a few moments of tranquillity.
To achieve this, 27 per cent prefer to hire a car for a more authentic local holiday experience, as it provides them with greater freedom to explore, be more independent and make spontaneous discoveries.
Laura Lindsay, from Skyscanner, added: "Living like a local doesn't have to mean going completely off-grid - it's about making small, intentional choices that enrich your travel.
"And best of all, it helps support the communities you visit, from independent businesses to artisans and family-run restaurants. It's a win for travellers and locals alike."

Vancouver is, of course, one of many locations in North America you can visit to watch the biggest sporting event on the planet, live and in person, in less than 12 months. But it's safe to say most Brits will feel more at home here than in the United States or Mexico. The Canadians have the same sense of humour as us. They have the same King as us. They even seem to have the same appreciation for Oasis, given their songs seemed to be played whenever my accent is heard in a bar. If you're planning a football holiday, there is so much to do here. And, as a nervous flyer, I was a little terrified when I saw it was the first activity on our itinerary. My heart was pounding ahead of our flight with Harbour Air, but I had nothing to worry about. The take-off and landing felt smoother than a regular plane, and the views were nothing short of remarkable. If taking the skies isn't your bag, one of the coolest things to do in Vancouver is on the water: whale watching. On a tour with the Prince of Whales, you have the chance to spot orcas and humpback whales, as well as bald eagles soaring overhead, with marine mammal experts on hand to guide and answer questions. There's also canoeing with Takaya Tours, where you can paddle tranquil waters with Indigenous guides from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. It's a memorable experience; they'll sing traditional songs and tell tales from their dark but fascinating past. Back on dry land, Vancouver's most visited year-round attraction is Grouse Mountain, where you can enjoy panoramic views from the gondola. At the top, you'll be on the lookout for grizzly bears and a slightly less thrilling lumberjack show. As Brits, we've come to associate Canada with ice hockey and freezing temperatures. But that certainly isn't the case during summertime in Vancouver, where the beautiful game is thriving. Don't be put off by the fact they call it soccer , because there is not one but three Vancouver-based football teams to get behind at various levels. Watching Vancouver FC was the highlight of my trip. They had a hype man called 'Crazy P' leading chants from fans with a drum; one is sung to the tune of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics. It was a little like an English non-league match, but with a lot more emphasis on entertainment. Then there's Vancouver Rise, one of six founding clubs in a new Canadian professional women's football league. Their president, Sinead King, is a Brit who played in the academies of Chelsea and Southampton. You also have the city's biggest club, the Vancouver Whitecaps, who play in Major League Soccer and regularly pull in crowds of more than 20,000. The Whitecaps play at the same stunning stadium, BC Place, as Canada's national side. That's where I met ex-player and manager Bob Lenarduzzi, who regaled me with stories of playing against Pele, Johan Cruyff and George Best. During the World Cup, Vancouver will have a FIFA Fan Festival site at Hastings Park featuring live entertainment in a world-class amphitheatre. Much like London, Vancouver is famous for its multiculturalism, which means there are incredible food options to suit every taste and budget. For a little bit of everything, there's nothing I recommend more than Vancouver Foodie Tours. It's widely rated as one of the world's greatest food tours, for good reason. It includes some of the best bread, cheese, meats and chocolate you'll ever put into your mouth. My favourite part was the sugar doughnut at the end. If you like Japanese food, one place you can't miss is Tojo's. More Trending A lot of Olympians have eaten there, as has the Toronto Raptors basketball team. Chef Hidekazu Tojo is even credited with inventing the California roll. For drinks, head for Havana, a cosy bar serving quirky cocktails and British Columbia craft beers. As she stepped onto a fishing boat that waited in a tiny cove on the Solway Firth, Mary, Queen of Scots - with her shorn auburn hair, plain dress and panic in her heart - set sail on the worst decision of her life. As she sought sanctuary in England and the help of her cousin, Elizabeth I, following her forced abdication from the Scottish throne, she set the route to her long captivity of 19 years and, ultimately, her death. Each location drew Mary further from the Border and any hope of her release and return to Scotland as Elizabeth I and her advisers kept the threat to English rule and of a broader Catholic rebellion at bay. 'For me, that becomes absolutely riveting. You see the power of the English state secret service working against Mary. And there she is, keeping up her own end towards the great finale of her life.' Mary, as she set sail on the Solway Firth looking for help, never fully assessed the threat she posed to Elizabeth I or the country at large. Devout Catholics believed she had a stronger claim to the English throne than Elizabeth, given her grandfather James IV was married to Margaret Tudor, the older sister of Henry VIII. PIC:. | Getty Images Despite initial warm words between Elizabeth and Mary - and the suggestion that Mary would be returned to Scotland if her innocence in the plot to kill her second husband Lord Darnley was proven - Elizabeth and her advisors quickly poured their energies into containing the exile. Goring said: 'From that point, Mary became a much more thoughtful personality and, actually, even though she could be quite Machiavellian, my respect for her is absolutely enormous given the way she coped with the conditions of her captivity, Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'She often goes for months without any contact with the outside world or knowing what was happening with her son James VI while believing, misguidedly, that he was on her side.' As her captivity and isolation deepened, Mary showed herself a 'natural when it came to the black arts of subterfuge and dissemblance'. She spent much of her time at her desk writing letters and petitioning diplomats and potential allies, both at home and abroad. She became immersed in cryptology to an 'unhealthy degree', with some believing that her obsession with secret communications and its methods hastened her death. The correspondence, which was believed to have been lost, was found in the National Library of France in Paris by a group of cryptographers. The letters date from 1578 to 1584 and chart the mindset of an increasingly desperate queen. They include the details of her role in the 1583 Throckmorton Plot, which planned for a French invasion of England, the assassination of Elizabeth I and the arrival of Mary, Queen of Scots on the English throne. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Goring said; 'Mary was not just aware of the Throckmorton Plot, but offered money to her Guise relatives in France to help them be part of this plot. So she was completely complicit in that as well as many other machinations as she tried to be part of the incredibly complicated European politics of the time.' After the Throckmorton Plot, Mary was returned to Tutbury Castle, a place of 'soaring curtain walls and solid towers, the definition of a prison'. Her son James VI, now ruling Scotland in his own right, dismissed an ongoing notion presented by his mother that they could jointly head the country. Mary turned in earnest to plot against Elizabeth as her only route of escape. Mary wrote the 'Gallows Letter' on July 17, 1586, authorising the plot and making recommendations. Fatefully, she agreed to Elizabeth's assassination: 'sett the six gentlemen to work'. The letter was intercepted in a beer barrel, decoded and used to seal her execution on February 8, 1587. Goring said: "The people of Scotland were outraged and, particularly in the Borders, there was talk of marching into England and confronting the English for what they had done. 'They felt there had been a terrible deed committed. That shows, at a popular level, people's interest in her had never diminished or died.' A RUSSIAN volcano has erupted for the first time in centuries, sending ash surging 29,000ft into the sky. Pilots have been warned of flight dangers with a red aviation alert after the eruption of Krasheninnikov. While it is listed as an active stratovolcano, it has not erupted for around 600 years - before observations were made. New footage emerged today of tsunami waves climbing up the land in the remote Kuril Islands. A man and his dog retreating could be seen fleeing as a fresh warning was issued following another earthquake of 7 on the Richter scale in eastern Russia. The dramatic footage was captured on Shumshu Island, just off the southern coast of the Kamchatka peninsula. Vsevolod Yakovlev, head of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, said today: "Its eruption is not something out of the ordinary for a region with high volcanic activity. "During satellite monitoring, thermal spots have been repeatedly noted in the area of the Krasheninnikov volcano. "This is a significant increase in temperature on the Earth's surface compared to neighbouring areas." Tsunami warnings following last week's quake have since been lifted. It is also home to the Valley of the Geysers, and has one of the world's largest concentrations of brown bears. Russian volcanologist Alexei Ozerov said: "A crack opened up along the volcano from the top of the crater, and a steam-gas mixture is currently rising from this crack. "Emissions are occurring, and a large amount of ash was ejected during the opening of the crater crack. "This ash reached the Valley of Geysers, and …the smell of gas… "A question is immediately raised about the evacuation of the Valley of Geysers, those tourists who are there." But according to Russian officials, there was no immediate threat to life or wildlife. The response team said: "The explosive eruption of the volcano continues. "Ash explosions up to 10 km (32,800 ft) above sea level could occur at any time. "Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft."
