Is Visa's Tap to Ride in Shanghai More Than Just Transit Convenience?

Is Visa's Tap to Ride in Shanghai More Than Just Transit Convenience?

Visa Inc. V, a world leader in digital payments, is set to launch its 'Tap to Ride' service across the entire Shanghai Metro from June 28, following a successful pilot on the Shanghai Maglev Line on June 14. International travelers will be able to access any of Shanghai's 21 metro lines and 517 stations by tapping their Visa contactless cards to enter and exit the system.
Spanning 896 kilometers and serving more than 77% of Shanghai's daily public-transport users, the Shanghai Metro is among the largest and busiest urban-rail systems globally. With the rollout of Visa's 'Tap to Ride,' international cardholders will gain access to a secure, convenient and contactless way to pay for travel. This integration will enhance the transit experience, making journeys quicker and more efficient.
This move aims to connect 5 billion cardholders to the city's transit system, supporting Shanghai's growth as a global consumption hub. With contactless payments rising in popularity, Chinese users witnessed a 10% increase in Tap to Pay usage during the 2025 May Day holiday. Visa has launched more than 870 'Tap to Ride' projects globally, processing 2 billion contactless-transit payments in fiscal 2024.
Apart from boosting transit convenience, the expansion of 'Tap to Ride' is likely to enhance Visa's financial outlook by increasing transaction volumes, especially from international travelers, boosting cross-border revenues and strengthening its presence in key markets like China. It supports the global shift to digital payments and enables data-led partnerships that contribute to sustained business growth.
How Are Mastercard and American Express Keeping Pace in Transit Expansion?
Mastercard Incorporated MA has expanded its contactless-payment capabilities across the Beijing Metro, allowing international visitors to use their Mastercard-issued cards to pay fares directly at all metro stations. As the first global payment brand fully integrated into the city's transit system, this move highlights the growing push among major networks to enhance urban mobility and deliver seamless payment experiences for global travelers.
American Express Company 's AXP contactless cards have been accepted on Singapore's MRT and buses since May 15, 2025. American Express users enjoy standard fares, no registration and trip tracking via the SimplyGo app, enhancing convenience and transparency. This expansion strengthens American Express's position in global transit payments across key urban markets.

Tesla's V4 Chargers Hit China: Can They Outrun Fierce Competition?

Electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla TSLA just launched its first batch of V4 Superchargers in China — the world's largest EV market. These chargers offer faster charging speed, with compatible EVs achieving 168-200 miles of range in 15 minutes. The V4 Superchargers deliver peak charge rates up to 325 kW, higher than 250 kW offered by Tesla's V3 Superchargers. Additionally, the V4 chargers promise broader access. They would not just power Tesla vehicles, but also electric cars from other brands in China. These V4 Superchargers have been initially rolled out in Shanghai, Chongqing, Gansu, and Zhejiang provinces. Tesla plans to expand the deployment of these chargers to Beijing, Guangdong province, along with other Chinese localities, but there is no set deadline for the same yet. Tesla's Shanghai factory has begun manufacturing V4 chargers, so expansion wouldn't be much of an issue. Plus, thanks to the design of the chargers and economies of scale, installation costs are low (each V4 station costing less than $40,000). Tesla already has more than 11,000 charging stalls in China, and with the rollout of V4 chargers, it is strengthening its charging infrastructure in the country. With the V4 Supercharger available to third-party EVs, it could also evolve into a default public charging solution. Worldwide, Tesla has more than 70,000 Superchargers, making it the largest EV charging network globally. This leadership has made its charging connector the go-to choice for many EV makers in North America and Europe. Charging Wars: How Tesla's Rivals Stack Up in China The timing of this V4 Supercharger launch in China is interesting as competition is heating up in the country's charging corridor. China's BYD Co Ltd BYDDY is making the loudest entrance, touting 'megawatt' chargers that promise 400 km of range in just five minutes. BYD first talked up 4,000 of these units, then upped the target to 15,000 through partnerships, though it still hasn't shared a firm build-out timeline. Peak power looks dazzling on paper, but hardware costs and network density will decide who wins daily traffic. Meanwhile, another promising EV company, Li Auto LI is also making efforts to scale. As of May 2025 end, Li Auto operated 2,414 super-charging sites (13,195 stalls). It is targeting more than 4,000 stations live by year-end. Li Auto is focusing on highway access and aims to blanket 90% of China's main routes by 2025. Now, Tesla's V4 rollout indeed trails BYD in headline power yet beats it on installed base and cost efficiency. And while li Auto excels at highway coverage, Tesla's 11,000-plus stalls in China—and open access for rival EVs—give it a broader moat if it can keep pace on expansion. TSLA's Price Performance, Valuation and Estimates Shares of Tesla have lost around 21% year to date compared with the industry's decline of 19%. The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and Coinbase Global

For Immediate Release Chicago, IL – July 1, 2025 – announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: PayPal PYPL, Visa Inc. V, Mastercard Inc. MA and Coinbase Global COIN. Here are highlights from Monday's Analyst Blog: What Does -13% YTD Drop for PayPal Mean: Buy, Hold or Sell? PayPa l shares have dropped 13.7% year to date, largely due to intensifying competition in the fintech sector. Rivals like Visa Inc., Mastercard Inc., Apple Pay and Adyen continue to expand their offerings, challenging PayPal's dominance in digital payments. Broader macroeconomic pressures and uncertainty surrounding the tariff policy have also dampened investor sentiment. Compared to its peers, PayPal's performance has been notably weaker. While PYPL has struggled, Visa shares have climbed 10.3%, and Mastercard has risen 4.5% over the same timeframe, highlighting PayPal's relative underperformance in a competitive and uncertain market environment. However, before rushing to sell this stock or capitalize on the dip, it's crucial to assess whether PayPal has the growth potential and determine if the current challenges could meaningfully affect its performance. Tailwinds and Challenges That Could Shape PayPal's Outlook PayPal's evolution from a payments provider to a comprehensive, end-to-end strategic commerce partner, focusing on personalized experiences and leveraging data to create a dynamic smart wallet for consumers, marks a pivotal shift in its business model. The company is converging into a single PayPal platform to harness the full potential of its two-sided network, supporting both consumers and merchants. PayPal is positioning itself as a comprehensive commerce partner for merchants, expanding its role beyond that of a traditional payments processor. PayPal's focus on enhancing branded checkout, person-to-person (P2P) services and Venmo has supported growth in active user accounts. In the first quarter of 2025, transaction margin dollars rose 7% year over year to $3.72 billion, driven by strong performance across omnichannel commerce, Venmo and Payment Service Provider ("PSP"). Venmo revenues surged 20%, contributing 18% to the total payment volume. The company remains on track with its intention to extend its successful U.S. omnichannel strategy to global markets, with NFC functionality scheduled to roll out in Germany during the second quarter and in the U.K. in the third quarter. PayPal's Buy Now Pay Later ("BNPL") business is gaining strong traction, with first-quarter volume rising more than 20% and monthly active accounts up 18% year over year. BNPL users spend 33% more and make 17% more transactions, on average, highlighting its effectiveness in driving consumer engagement. To build on this momentum, PayPal is rolling out targeted awareness campaigns across key markets, including the U.K., Germany, Australia, France, Italy and Spain, aiming to drive broader adoption and reinforce its position in the BNPL space. This augurs well for long-term growth. PayPal's growing network of strategic partners, including Coinbase Global, Fiserv, Adyen, Amazon, Global Payments and Shopify, is bolstering its growth outlook. Earlier this year, PayPal deepened its collaboration with Coinbase to accelerate the adoption, distribution and usage of its PayPal USD ("PYUSD") stablecoin, giving Coinbase users direct access to PYUSD. However, while necessary, investments in product modernization (branded platform, AI), Venmo expansion and geographic rollout (NFC in Germany, UK omnichannel) are likely to keep weighing on margin improvement in the near term. Moreover, despite a strong first quarter, PayPal held steady on its full-year outlook, pointing to macroeconomic uncertainties such as geopolitical tensions and tariff-related risks as reasons for caution. PayPal Shares Trading Cheap PayPal shares are trading cheap, as suggested by the Value Score of B. In terms of forward 12-month P/E, PYPL stock is trading at 13.74X compared with the Zacks Financial Transaction Services industry's 22.48X. The stock is cheaper than competitors, including Visa and Mastercard. Shares of Visa and Mastercard are currently trading at P/E of 28.11X and 31.82X, respectively. PYPL's Estimate Revisions Exhibit Positive Trend PayPal's estimate revisions reflect a positive trend for the second quarter, as well as for the full years 2025 and 2026, though the same for the third quarter is not that impressive and is going south. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is pegged at $5.08 per share, suggesting 9.25% growth over 2024. The consensus mark for second-quarter 2025 earnings is pegged at $1.30 per share, calling for 9.2% growth over the figure reported in the year-ago quarter. Final Take on PYPL Stock PayPal's strategic transformation is underway, supported by a broad user base, a trusted brand and a revitalized leadership team. Execution across core initiatives, from branded checkout and Venmo to BNPL and international omnichannel, demonstrates early success. However, stiff competition, a challenging macroeconomic environment and margin trade-offs temper the near-term outlook. The stock is currently trading at a discount compared to its peers, but it may be wise to hold off on any decisions until there is more clarity on macroeconomic conditions and policy changes, as well as their potential effects on PayPal. So, it seems prudent for investors to wait for a more favorable point to start accumulating the stock. For existing shareholders, staying invested could be a reasonable choice, given the company's robust portfolio, expanding partner base and growth opportunities in the evolving fintech space. PayPal currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. Why Haven't You Looked at Zacks' Top Stocks? Tesla shares take a hit as feud between Trump and Musk reaches a boil

Shares of electric vehicle maker Tesla, which is headed by Elon Musk, slumped Tuesday as the war of words between billionaire and President Donald Trump over the big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts heats up again, with Musk saying he may form a new political party. Shares of Tesla have already tumbled more than 20% this year as sales of the company's vehicles erode amid a backlash against Musk and his association with the Trump administration. Tesla sales are plummeting in Europe and China as well. Tesla's stock fell nearly 6% in early trading. The resumption of hostilities between Trump and Musk, also the CEO of SpaceX, is always bad news for investors in Musk's companies. 'This BFF situation has now turned into a soap opera that remains an overhang on Tesla's stock with investors fearing that the Trump Administration will be more hawkish and show scrutiny around Musk related US government spending related to Tesla/SpaceX and most importantly the autonomous future with the regulatory environment key to the future of Robotaxis and Cybercabs,' wrote Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives on Tuesday. 'We would expect the stock to be weak to kick off trading this morning as the Street will show concern that the Trump and Musk once BFF relationship now backfires and turns into a junior high school friendship gone bad into an enemy.' The most prominent divide in the relationship between Musk and Trump is the president's big bill. Musk ramped up his criticism of the bill over the weekend, arguing the legislation that Republican senators are scrambling to pass would kill jobs and bog down burgeoning industries. Musk posted on X on Saturday that the bill would be 'political suicide for the Republican Party.' With the Senate working its way through a tense overnight session that dragged into Tuesday, Musk suggested he will work to get members of Congress who vote for the bill out of their seats next year. 'Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame,' he wrote on X. 'And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.' The post was viewed 26 million times on the social media platform. A few hours later, Musk followed up with a post claiming he will create a new political party if the bill passes. 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,' he wrote. "Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE." Musk's post about the America Party was viewed 32 million times on X. Trump focused some of his criticisms of Musk on EV mandates and subsidies. In a post on Truth Social early Tuesday, Trump said Musk has known that he's against an EV mandate and that people should not be forced to own electric vehicles. 'Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,' Trump wrote. Trump also suggested that the U.S. could cut back on spending by targeting segments of the economy in which Musk plays a significant roll. 'No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!' Trump posted, alluding to the cost-cutting entity that until recently, was headed by Musk. Several hours later, while standing on the White House lawn before heading to Florida, Trump continued to take shots at Musk and what he believes to be his biggest grievance, the billionaire's displeasure over potentially losing EV subsidies. 'He's very upset. You know, he can lose a lot more than that, I'll tell you right now," Trump said. "Elon can lose a lot more than that.' When asked by a reporter if he was going to deport Musk, Trump warned that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, could come back to hurt the billionaire. 'We'll have to take a look," Trump said. "We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies." Musk responded on X by saying he would refrain from escalating the conflict, but he took another shot at Trump and Republicans anyway. 'What good is Doge saving $160B when this bill increases the debt ceiling by $5T? It makes mockery of the work,' he wrote.
