The Switch 2 is off to a speedy start for big third-party games

With the Switch 2, Nintendo seems to be closing the release date gap with some of its third-party games. It's a problem that plagued previous Nintendo consoles, which often received games years after other platforms, if at all. While today's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase may have lacked the splash of anticipated third-party games like Hades 2 or FromSoftware's The Duskbloods, what was on display offered some interesting insight. Showcases like this one offer Nintendo's second- and third-party development and publishing partners the chance to show off what they've got on the way. In the original Switch days, multiplatform games like Control would get Switch release dates months or even years after their initial launch, if they came to the Switch at all. And even then, the game might sometimes be the cloud version, requiring it to be streamed on the console, and these were generally hated for their inconsistent graphics and performance issues. With this Direct, it seems like Nintendo is working to bring third-party games to the Switch 2 faster and, hopefully, with gameplay experiences similar to the other consoles. During this Direct, we got a look at Cronos: The New Dawn, a new game from Silent Hill 2 remake studio Bloober Team. Cronos looks like the kind of game that would have struggled on the original Switch, but it's releasing across all three consoles and PC on September 5th. Madden NFL 2026 is also launching across the Big 3 at the same time — August 14th — a feat of note considering the last time a Madden title was on a Nintendo console was Madden NFL 13 more than a decade ago. Star Wars Outlaws has been out since August of last year. Its arrival on the Switch 2 in September represents Ubisoft's most graphically and technically complex game on the platform since the Assassin's Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle. (And the most recent game in that collection was released more than 10 years ago.) Borderlands 4, while not launching exactly day and date, will come out on the Switch 2 a mere three weeks after its PC/Xbox/PlayStation launch. Even the third-party games that weren't shown today still represent exciting new prospects for the Switch 2. During the Switch 2 Direct in April, Elden Ring was shown as one of the games coming to the new console. With the way the original Switch struggled with more complex games, even ones designed with that console in mind, a big-ass, pretty-ass, particle-y effect-ass game like Elden Ring running on it was unthinkable. But Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, along with The Duskbloods, a totally original FromSoftware multiplayer joint, are both coming to the Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Remake, a game with the same kind of, if not higher, technical complexity as Elden Ring, is on the way too. Nintendo's always been the kind of company to do what it wants rather than chase market trends, and that strategy has served the company very well. The original Switch wasn't at the bleeding technical edge and, because of the high quality of its games, it didn't have to be. The Switch 2, similarly, isn't pushing the same kind of power as Xbox and PlayStation, but the console has evolved just enough that it can support some of the still-popular recent games of its competitors. And even if not everything new will come to the Switch 2, the console still has a robust back catalog to bring forward. During today's Direct we saw that Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is bringing the Yakuza Kiwami series to the Switch 2. We don't know how any of these games will perform when they're finally released on the Switch 2. We'll have to wait and see if the console fulfills the promise of bigger and better games running on improved hardware. We also don't know if the trend will continue beyond the initial excitement of a new console's launch window. But if the critical acclaim of the Switch 2 edition of Cyberpunk 2077 is anything to go by, the ports won't just be coming faster; they'll be good, too. Anime Food Just Reached Mouthwatering New Heights in ‘Dan Da Dan'

Anime has had a storied relationship with making food look more appealing than in real life. The most prominent example of this is the legendary Studio Ghibli, which has made a career of putting painstaking work into creating its fluid animation of food, practically wafting smoke from behind the screen and beckoning viewers to lean in closer. Dan Da Dan, ever the rebel, has opted for the opposite route in its latest episode by going full live action with its culinary the fifth episode of the second season of Dan Da Dan, titled 'We Can All Stay There Together,' Okarun, Momo, and their crew continue a tradition made famous by One Piece. After a harrowing battle, they celebrated their hard-earned victory with a feast of delicious foods. This victory involved stopping a raging volcano from setting fire to a nearby village and capturing Evil Eye, who resides in Jiji Enjoji's body. The otherwise pretty chill episode's biggest plot development is the discovery that Jiji and Evil Eye switch personalities whenever cold water is poured on him, reminiscent of Ranma 1/2 (which Dan Da Dan references explicitly by having him sing the original anime's theme song). However, we're not here to discuss the plot. We're here to talk about food. And this episode is chock-full of it in its opening and closing moments. The first is the presentation of a stuffed-to-the-brim bowl of hot pot. Of course, when the characters interact with the communal meal, the live-action food turns into 2D before getting nommed into their mouths. Regardless, Dan Da Dan's decision to drop all pretenses and post a photo of food instead of animating it was equal parts hilarious and mesmerizing. In fact, the feat was so surprising that even manga creator Yukinobu Tatsu voiced his surprise during his live Twitter reaction to the new episode. The episode doubles down on the visual gag with another live-action shot of some food in the episode's final scene as well, making it exceedingly clear that their inspired gastronomic animation decision was no fluke. THE REAL LIFE PIC OF THE MARINATED CHICKEN IS SO UNHINGED AND CREEPY WTH — Hikaru 🖤 Yoshiki (@hikayoshilover) July 12, 2025Dan Da Dan isn't the only Netflix anime that has dipped its toe into showcasing live-action food in its episodes as of late. Cyangames Pictures' anime adaptation of horror manga The Summer Hikaru Died did so as well, though for more shock-horror purposes. Inverse to Dan Da Dan showcasing food so delicious it'll make you want to open up your food delivery app and make some knee-jerk disposable income decisions, The Summer Hikaru Died showed a jumpscare frame of marinated raw chicken to exaggerate the feeling of sticking one's hand inside their demonic, puppeteered friend's body. (Note: If you like Dan Da Dan, take this as a recommendation to watch The Summer Hikaru Died as well.) — 土屋晶治 (@tsuchi31478044) July 12, 2025While The Summer Hikaru Died's gnarly implementation of live-action anime food succeeded in being unnervingly macabre, the anime's production crew assured fans that their live-action implementation of food was put to good use when they turned it into chicken karaage after the episode ended and shared it with the staff. Hopefully, the folks over at Science Saru got to dig in on their live-action anime food too once they finalized episode five of Dan Da Dan. New episodes of Dan Da Dan air every Thursday on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu. Want more io9 news? GODZILLA MINUS ONE Sequel Gearing Up for Filming, Koichi and Noriko Might Return — GeekTyrant

Godzilla Minus One isn't done stomping through theaters as a sequel to the critically acclaimed monster film is reportedly gearing up to shoot, and there's strong reason to believe that two major characters from the first film will return. The scoop comes from the website yamakazimovie-extra, which recently launched a casting call for background actors for a new Toho production helmed by director Takashi Yamazaki. He directed Godzilla Minus One , so we know this sequel is going to be just as great as the first film. The project is listed under the working title Masterpiece Monster Movie (tentative title), and it's already in the production phase. Filming is scheduled to begin on August 30 and will run into September in Tsukubamirai City, Ibaraki Prefecture, just outside of Tokyo. The casting call is looking for people aged 18 to 70 to portray 'townspeople, people fleeing, etc.' Digging even deeper, kaiju sleuth Kaiju No. 14 uncovered something pretty exciting. By poking around in the source code of the casting site, they found the names Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, who played Koichi and Noriko in the first film. If that holds true, the sequel might pick up right where the first left off, continuing their emotionally charged storyline. While the official casting description keeps things vague, it does tease 'a cast of some of Japan's most impressive actors' and 'an all-star cast representing Japan,' so the studio is definitely aiming high. Godzilla Minus One was a standout hit, not just for its jaw-dropping kaiju destruction but for its grounded, strong human story. The film centered on Koichi, a kamikaze pilot battling PTSD while trying to rebuild his life in post-war Japan — until Godzilla arrives to ruin everything. There's no official title or release date yet for the sequel, but with production underway and potential character returns, this could be another exciting chapter in Toho's Godzilla legacy.
