Orlando Pirates Ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED
Orlando Pirates beat Polokwane City 2-0 in the quarter finals of the MTN8 on Saturday, 02 August 2025.
So, let's take a look at the players who fired on all cylinders. As well as the players who performed slightly below-par.
Oswin Appollis – 8.5
Appollis kick-started his Pirates career off in fine fashion. So, he scored a goal and won a penalty to help inspire the Bucs to a 2-0 win. He remained a constant threat on attack. Furthermore, Appollis kept the Polokwane City defenders busy with his pace and skill.
Sipho Mbule – 7.5
Mbule is set to become a new Bucs fan-favourite. ' Master Chef ' cooked in the midfield on debut. He was composed and solid in the midfield. Thereafter, a solid 70-minutes ended with fans chanting ' Weh Mbule ' in appreciation for his first impressive debut.
Sihle Nduli – 7.5
Meanwhile, Nduli also had a very strong debut. The former Stellenbosch FC midfielder was like a magnet in the midfield with Nduli. He knew when to counter and when to play it back. Also, he was great defensively too.
Deon Hotto 7.5
Finally, the Bucs veteran showed why he is still highly rated at Pirates. Hotto hardly put a foot wrong and as he was solid at the back. The Polokwane Wingers were well marked by Hotto who stood his ground. He also knew when to make overlapping runs on the counter to offer himself as an attacking option.
Bandile Shandu – 6.5
Shandu didn't have a bad outing but it was far from his best. He was beaten on defence a couple of times and was not as sharp as he usually is on defence.
Relebohile Mofokeng – 6.5
There is no doubt that Mofokeng is one of the best young players in the PSL. However, on Saturday he was overshadowed by Appollis and Radiopane on attack. Most of the attacks came from the right side.

Mngqithi eyes explosive start with revamped Arrows squad
Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi gives out instructions to defender and captain Gladwin Shitolo as they plan an energetic approach to the season. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Manqoba Mngqithi is banking on speed, energy, and a younger Golden Arrows outfit to power the club into a bold new era, as the veteran coach prepares for his first full season in his third stint in charge of Abafana Bes'thende. After narrowly missing out on the top eight last term, Arrows have undergone a sweeping transformation, with Mngqithi taking a surgical approach to lowering the average age of the squad and raising the ambition. The Durban-based side kick off their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign with a tricky away clash against newcomers Siwelele FC on Saturday at 8pm. 'Our team was very old and no wonder we had a lot of unnecessary injuries (last season), we are hoping to have a team that's more energetic and more interesting in terms of play.' He added that while Arrows have historically leaned on experience, the new generation brings a fresh dynamic that he hopes will result in a more entertaining and resilient side. 'This is a totally different team in profile and personnel so I'm just eager to see everything come together now.' The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor — who famously led Arrows to MTN8 glory in 2009 — is no stranger to building under pressure. But he admitted that unlike that championship run, this time pre-season results have given him reason to be optimistic. 'I remember when I won the MTN8 with Arrows, I didn't win a single game in pre-season but this time we've had a good pre-season so I'm upbeat about the new season.'

Tinkler gives update on Chiefs-linked Makgalwa
'If a club wants Keletso and makes the right offer, the club will not stand in his way,' said the Sekhukhune head coach. Sekhukhune head coach Eric Tinkler says the club are prepared to let winger Keletso Makgalwa leave – but only at the right price. ALSO READ: Nabi promises better Chiefs season The 28 year-old had a superb 2024/25 campaign at Sekhukhune, and was nominated for both the Footballer of the Season, and Players' Player of the Season Awards. Tinkler – 'Keletso has a job to do' The former Sundowns player scored 6 goals and provided 11 assists in 32 appearances for Babina Noko last season. Kaizer Chiefs have been linked with a move for Makgalwa but according to Tinkler, the club have yet to receive an acceptable offer from any team. 'Keletso has a job to do at Sekhukhune,' said Tinkler on Tuesday at the launch of the new Betway Premiership season in Sandton. 'Whether there was an offer or not it doesn't meant the criteria that the club wants. He is a professional footballer and he needs to move on now. 'I explained to Keletso – he had the top assists in the league last season. Now if he wants people to be serious he must do it again. 'If a club wants Keletso and makes the right offer, the club will not stand in his way. But if it is not beneficial to the club, why should the club release the player? It doesn't make sense.' A fine start Makgalwa already has one assist for Sekhukhune in the new campaign, Bradley Grobler heading home his corner in the 3-2 MTN8 quarterfinal win against TS Galaxy last weekend. Mamelodi Sundowns star at centre of multi-million bidding war
Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has found himself at the heart of a transfer tug-of-war, with lucrative interest pouring in from North Africa, the Persian Gulf, and Sudan. The only hurdle remains the hefty price tag the Tshwane club has placed on the Namibian star. The 30-year-old, who no longer features in head coach Miguel Cardoso's plans, has attracted concrete interest from Esperance de Tunis, an unnamed Qatari side, and Al Hilal of Sudan, who have entered the race late but with serious intent. Shalulile, who joined Sundowns from Highlands Park in 2020, wasted no time in becoming the club's top marksman, consistently delivering goals across all competitions. However, his form and influence appear to have meant little to Cardoso, who has sidelined the forward during pre-season and excluded him from Sunday's MTN8 quarterfinal against Richards Bay. The writing appeared on the wall when Shalulile, along with Lucas Ribeiro and Khuliso Mudau, failed to make the squad. A club insider confirmed. 'It became crystal clear that he would not be part of the way forward.' Cardoso, when quizzed about Shalulile's absence, dodged the question and pointed to the club's hierarchy for clarity, further fuelling speculation over the striker's future. While Shalulile has reportedly received verbal offers from all three interested clubs, the stumbling block remains Sundowns' valuation. According to a source close to the negotiations, personal terms will not pose a challenge, but the club must agree to the right transfer fee. Despite his recent exclusion, Sundowns activated Shalulile's one-year option after his participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, signalling their intent to either cash in or retain control over the situation. With just one year left on his contract, Sundowns are under pressure to offload the player or risk losing him for free. The coming days will be crucial, as Esperance, the unnamed Qatari outfit, and Al Hilal continue to jostle for his signature. Unless Sundowns reduce their asking price, Shalulile's potential exit could remain in limbo. However, all signs point towards an imminent move. And possibly one of the biggest headlines of the South African transfer window. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
