A huge explosion at a petrol station in a Rome suburb on Friday injured nearly 30 people, two of them seriously, and rattled windows across the Italian capital.
The blast around 8:20am (0620 GMT) was preceded by a fire caused by a gas leak during refuelling, according to Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who provided the toll of injured.
Gualtieri visited the charred and smoking remains of the petrol and liquified natural gas (LNG) station and an adjacent sports centre in the Prenestino neighbourhood of eastern Rome.
Gas explosion
The explosion sent a fireball and thick black smoke into the air, and was heard on the other side of Rome, shaking windows and causing some residents to worry that a bomb had gone off.
'The explosion was really powerful. I felt my skin burning,' Michele Seco, a 23-year-old who worked at the now-destroyed sports centre, told AFP.
Before the explosion, emergency services and police were called to investigate the gas leak and had evacuated the immediate area, including a children's summer camp.

Police and civilians injured
Police said 10 of their officers and one member of the fire service were injured, in addition to 16 civilians, two of whom were in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
Fabio Balzani, head of the sports centre, said if the fire had occurred just a bit later it could have been disastrous, with 60 children expected at the camp and around 120 people booked to use the pool.
'It would have been a massacre, a catastrophe,' he told AFP.
Andrea Quattrocchi, the local chief of the Carabinieri police force, said the timely intervention of his team was crucial.
'They extracted a person alive from a burning car,' who was taken to hospital and is in a serious but stable condition, Quattrocchi told reporters.
Witnesses said an ambulance exploded in the fire.

Cause of the explosion
Ennio Aquilino, regional director of the Lazio fire department, said the petrol station explosion was caused by a 'BLEVE' — a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion — of the liquified natural gas.
A BLEVE is caused by the rapid vaporisation of a pressurised liquid, normally when the vessel containing it is ruptured in some way.
'The effect is as if a bomb has gone off,' Aquilino told reporters.
He said the first call to firefighters had been for a gas leak, then shortly afterwards came the explosion.
He said they did not have time to stop it, only to clear the area.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was following the situation, and offered her support for all those injured.

MMA star Conor McGregor loses appeal in rape civil case
Irish professional mixed martial artist and businessman Conor McGregor (L) speaks from the White House briefing room podium with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Photo: Jim Watson/AFP Image: Jim Watson/AFP Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor lost an appeal in Ireland on Thursday over a civil court ruling last year awarding damages to a woman who accused him of rape. Three judges at the Court of Appeal in Dublin dismissed all the grounds for appeal raised by McGregor, 36. Jurors at Dublin's High Court in November awarded damages of almost 250,000 euros ($258,000) to Nikita Hand, 35, who alleged that McGregor raped her in a hotel in the Irish capital in 2018. The court heard allegations that McGregor "brutally raped and battered" Hand. The Irish sports star has insisted they had consensual sex. Following the November ruling, McGregor was ordered to pay the entire costs of the case, estimated at around 1.5 million euros ($1.58 million). He appealed the jury's decision, seeking a re-trial of the civil case against him. McGregor, a vocal figure in the Irish anti-immigration movement who in March met US President Donald Trump in the White House during a Saint Patrick's Day visit, was not in court during a month of appeal hearings. His legal team argued that judicial errors occurred in the original trial, including in how he was cross-examined. After the ruling, Hand told reporters that the appeal had "retraumatised" her but that she can now "finally move on and try to heal". "To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please don't be silenced, you deserve to be heard, you also deserve justice," she said. Nicknamed "The Notorious," McGregor is one of the biggest stars in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial arts circuit, formerly holding the featherweight and lightweight titles. The Irishman was sued in a US court in January, accused of sexual assault at an NBA game in Miami in 2023. He has announced plans to run in Ireland's presidential election this year. The vote to elect the country's next president – a largely ceremonial role without executive power – must be held by mid-November but he faces a number of steep hurdles to get on the ballot. West Ham's Paqueta cleared of betting charges
West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission, the club announced on Thursday. The Brazil international was charged with four alleged breaches of Football Association (FA) rules in relation to matches involving the Premier League side. It was alleged the 27-year-old directly sought to influence games by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the "improper purpose of affecting the betting market". The four charges against Paqueta related to a game against Leicester in November 2022 and matches against Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth in 2023. He was facing the prospect of a lifetime ban if found guilty. The Brazilian denied the charges and the independent regulatory commission found them not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta, related to a failure to cooperate with its investigation, had been found proven. It said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches "at the earliest opportunity". The Brazilian, who joined West Ham in 2022, said in a club statement that he had always maintained his "innocence against these extremely serious accusations". "I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face," he said. "To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me." West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady said: "We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the outset, and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process." Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: "Few cases carry the gravity of this one -- professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. "Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience." The FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was given a suspended two-month ban in May last year over breaches of betting rules. It came as the Italian international was serving a 10-month ban handed down by the Italian authorities for betting offences.

Senior advocate Seth Nthai convicted and sentenced for soliciting R5m bribe
The High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, in Johannesburg, convicted and sentenced former senior counsel Seth Nthai yesterday, after he pleaded guilty to corruption charges relating to a 2009 bribery scandal involving an international arbitration case. Sandton Chronicle reports that Nthai admitted to soliciting a R5m bribe from Italian businessman Mario Marcenaro during a meeting in Sandton on October 10, 2009. At the time, Nthai was representing the South African government in the high-profile Piero Foresti and others v The Government of the Republic of South Africa case. The bribe was intended to influence the outcome of the arbitration in favour of Marcenaro and his co-claimants. As part of a plea and sentence agreement, the court imposed a fine of R500 000 or two years' imprisonment. Additionally, Nthai received a five-year sentence, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence during the suspension period. The court noted the severity of the offence, particularly given that the complainant in the matter was the South African government itself. The judge also considered Nthai's guilty plea, co-operation during proceedings, and his age when delivering the sentence. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said the investigations revealed that Nthai had disclosed confidential and strategic information about the case to Marcenaro without authorisation in exchange for the promised bribe. 'Although the R5m was never paid, the court found that the mere solicitation of such a bribe constituted a serious breach of legal and ethical duty,' said Mjonondwane. 'The case had a complex legal history, including extensive trial proceedings and the recusal of the initial presiding judge after several state witnesses had already testified. This led to the matter being restarted before a new judge, ultimately resulting in the current plea agreement.' She added that they have welcomed the conviction as a significant victory in their ongoing efforts to root out corruption. 'This conviction affirms our commitment to fighting corruption, especially within the legal profession and among public office bearers. The abuse of public trust and the justice system by legal professionals is a serious threat to the rule of law. Mr Nthai's actions were a betrayal of that trust, and this sentence sends a clear message that no one is above the law.' Mjonondwane explained the importance of maintaining integrity within state institutions. 'This outcome demonstrates that unethical behaviour, regardless of one's status or position, will be prosecuted vigorously. We will continue to act without fear or favour to protect the public interest.' The NPA has reiterated its ongoing commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability across all sectors, particularly in cases involving the manipulation of justice for personal enrichment.
