India captain Shubman Gill became the first batsman in Test history to make scores of 250 and 150 in the same match before Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep again struck with the new ball as the tourists pressed for a series-levelling win at Edgbaston on Saturday.Gill followed his first-innings 267 in the second Test with another superb knock of 161 off just 162 balls.He eventually declared India's second innings on 427-6 after tea on the fourth day.That left England needing a mammoth 608 runs to go 2-0 up in this five-match series.No side in 148 years of Test cricket have made more to win in the fourth innings than the West Indies' 418 against Australia at St John's in 2003.England's corresponding record is the 378 they made against India at Edgbaston three years ago.But at Saturday's close in Birmingham they were 72-3, needing a further 536 runs on the final day to achieve a win that would be remarkable even in their current 'Bazball' era of aggressive batting.But Harry Brook, who helped keep England afloat in the first innings with 158 in a total of 407, was still there on 15 not out.Siraj, who led India's attack with 6-70 in the first innings, struck an early blow Saturday when he removed Zak Crawley for a duck as a loose drive went straight to backward point.Deep, given the unenviable task of replacing Jasprit Bumrah, the world's number one ranked fast bowler, then carried on from his four-wicket haul first-time around by bowling left-hander Ben Duckett (25) with a nip-back ball.He then clean bowled Joe Root for just six as the world's number one-ranked Test batsman was undone by a superb full-length ball that moved away late.Earlier, by taking his tally in this match to 430 runs, the 25-year-old Gill became only the fifth batsman to score 400 or more runs in a single Test.Gill, thrust into the captaincy following Rohit Sharma's shock retirement from Test duty in May, has scored three hundreds in his first four innings as skipper following his 147 during India's defeat in the first Test at Headingley.He was ably assisted earlier Saturday by Rishabh Pant, who made England pay dearly for dropping him twice, including a poor miss by Crawley at mid-off when the wicketkeeper had made just 10.Pant cashed in with a typically dashing 65 during a fourth-wicket partnership of 110 in just 103 balls with his skipper.But Gill, often a classical stylist, showed he could bat just as aggressively as Pant by hitting fast bowler Josh Tongue for three consecutive boundaries, with a superb hooked six followed by a swiped four over mid-on and a scorching pull that England captain Ben Stokes could not stop.Gill, batting in the number four slot previously occupied by India star Virat Kohli, who retired just days after Rohit, hooked another six off Tongue.Pant's dashing display ended when, trying to smash off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, he lost control of his bat, which flew to midwicket while the ball went to deep mid-off -- where Duckett made no mistake with the catch.Pant faced just 58 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.After tea, Gill piled on the runs with a brilliant straight six and two fours off consecutive balls from Chris Woakes, before slog-sweeping part-time off-spinner Root for six to go to 150 in superb style.There was a comical moment next ball when Ollie Pope, with sunglasses on top of his cap rather than over his eyes, lost sight of a chance in the deep.Gill's brilliant display finally ended when he spooned a simple return catch to Bashir, having hit 13 fours and eight sixes in his latest masterclass.There were crowd chants of "Boring, boring India" as the tourists batted on before Gill finally called a halt, with Ravindra Jadeja 69 not out.

"I met him a few days ago and we were just chatting generally. And this topic about captaincy came up," Karthik said on the Sky Cricket podcast. "And he said, you know, people think I'm a great Test cricketer and I enjoyed my Test batting — which I did. But the fact is that me getting my captaincy was the best thing to happen to my batting," he added. Karthik then compared Kohli's remark with what India's new Test captain Shubman Gill had said about batting and captaincy. Shubman Gill Filling In 'Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar's' Spots: England Made Aware Of Target No. 1 After Loss
Shubman Gill 's technically sound game and serene temperament has left quite an impression on former England opener Mark Butcher, who feels the Indian Test captain has taken ownership of Virat Kohli 's number four spot quite comfortably despite the "enormous scrutiny". Butcher, who has been commentating in the ongoing India-England Test series, has been left in awe of the visitors' batters especially Gill, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. All three go to Lord's for the third Test starting July 10 with hundreds against their names. Gill's staggering performance includes three hundreds and has catapulted his average into the 40s from mid 35s in just two Tests. Speaking to PTI, Butcher said what Gill has done in his first series as captain is beyond special. "There aren't many jobs in world sport that come with as much pressure and scrutiny as being Indian cricket captain, right? Not to mention you're filling in Kohli's spot in the order, or Tendulkar's spot in the order (both held number four spot). "So the pressures were enormous. And so far, he's taken to it like a duck to water. He's just looked very, very comfortable, very serene in terms of his temperament," said the 52-year-old, who played 71 Tests for England between 1997 and 2004. There were some questions over Gill's temperament and technique ahead of the series but the 25-year-old shut that debate for the foreseeable future with 585 runs in four innings. "And technically, he's played beautifully as well. So what a great start to the series. I mean, he might have some records in his side by the end of it. He's passed enough already. So what's he got? 600 already in the series. It has been an incredible start. "And England will have to come up with an answer for him in that middle order, because they obviously feel, that you get past the top three or then there are bounties to be had a bit further down the order,' he said referring to India's brittle lower-order. Love watching KL Rahul, Jaiswal obsessed with batting Butcher eyes widen while talking about Rahul, who has performed well at both up and down the batting order over the past 24 months. Following Rohit Sharma 's retirement, the opening pairing of Jaiswal and Rahul has been an instant hit. "Every time I've seen KL play, so we go back to the 2021 series here in England, and he batted at the top of the order with Rohit," said Butcher. "So technically, he just looks very, very suited to top-order batting, really. And the fact that he's now going to have a long run, hopefully, in that position, his average will go upwards of 40 very, very quickly because technically he's fabulous. He's a great player to watch. "I really love watching him bat. And Jaiswal is just a generational talent. The number three thing is a little bit sticky for India. It was a bit harsh on (Sai) Sudharsan after the first Test for him to find himself on the outside. And now Karun Nair 's had, sort of three, four failures over the course of the series." Butcher said India must decide on a number three and stick to him for a while. "...you have to kind of make your choice and stick with it for a while because clearly, facing the new ball is difficult. People are going to get out for low scores. But you have to make your decision on who you think is the guy that's going to fulfil that position." On Jaiswal, Butcher said that he has an apparent weakness against the short ball into the body but he has somehow dealt with it effectively. "Jaiswal just loves batting by the looks of it. I was talking to Kumar Sangakkara about him, obviously knows him from time at the IPL. And he just says he's obsessed by batting and scoring runs. "And he does it in a beautifully pleasing way. For somebody who's so young and so relatively inexperienced to sort of look as comfortable at the top of the order in all these different conditions, is magnificent. Is his short-ball play in need of improvement? "Yeah, possibly (he has a short ball weakness). It hasn't cost him his wicket as yet. But it'll be something that he'll work on, I'm sure. And England have had a little bit of success against him around the wicket as well," he pointed out. "But as I've said, he's so sort of obsessed with batting and with improving. I'm sure he'll come up with an answer for it," said Butcher. Butcher the musician and songwriter Besides cricket, Butcher loves his music that includes song-writing. He draws inspiration for his music from the happenings in the world. One of his albums was inspired by experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Does he love his music more than cricket? "I've been very lucky. Since I was 17 years old, I haven't had to do what I would class as a proper day's work. I've been a cricket player, musician, songwriter, commentator. And all of those things are passions of mine. I love them all equally. "And I've been very fortunate to have made a living out of doing it. I'm touching wood that I'll continue to do that until I can no longer," added Butcher.
