Jofra Archer primed for Test reward after four years of 'heartache and pain'

Jofra Archer has been included in the England squad for the second Test of the summer against India after bowling just 18 overs in red ball cricket for the first time in four years England supremo Rob Key says Jofra Archer's Test comeback after a four-year intermission will be his reward for fighting through the 'heartache and pain.' Archer was included in the squad for the second Test against India, starting at Edgbaston on Wednesday, after bowling just 18 overs in red-ball cricket since 2021. ‌ And managing director Key insists he never gave up hope of seeing England's 2019 World Cup final super-over hero unleashed on the Test stage again - despite his litany of elbow and back injuries. ‌ Archer bowled 18 overs for Sussex in their county championship draw with Durham earlier this week, taking 1-32, and that was enough to convince the England think-tank it was time to recall their Barbados-born warhead. Speaking at an event for Test sponsors Rothesay, Key said: 'I've never been worried that he wouldn't be back because he's always shown that he wanted it. "I'm no expert on the medical side, but we've got some brilliant physios and doctors who use the best specialists in the world, whether it was his elbow, his back or whatever. 'So if you go on what they say, and if they think there's a chance, Jofra's always been adamant that he's wanted to play Test cricket again. 'He could have been tempted to go down other routes (like franchise cricket) and he's never once done it. I've always had faith in Jofra, he'a always wanted to do it. 'Bowlers do go through a bit of heartache and pain, but you hope at some point they find a period where they can just play. ‌ 'Is 18 overs enough? I think you watch and see how it's coming out, you can see how he's bowling and track everything he's doing and how he feels. 'And I think he just found it mentally more challenging, just adapting to it than anything else, and he'll get better and better throughout the Test series. ‌ 'For any fast bowler, not just Jofra, you want to be at the stage where they can impact the game. 'I don't really think in terms of whether it might too much too soon - Jofra is one of the best bowlers in the world, Just think he'll bowl a decent pace and ask a few questions along the way. ‌ 'Hopefully for the next few years we'll be fortunate enough to see Jofra have a chance to stake that claim. He ain't going to forget how to bowl, so when we make that call we're not concerned. 'He's 30 years old now, he knows exactly what he's doing and what he's about. He's got a few more years to come.' Former England captain Michael Vaughan called the five-wicket win at Headingley, where England chased down 371 with 14 overs to spare on the final day to go 1-0 up in the series, 'Bazball with brains.' But Key admitted: 'I'm still not mad on the Bazball thing so I wouldn't call it anything. But the message is the same - if someone bowls poorly, you put them to the sword, and if they bowl well you find a way to get through it.'

'How many dams will Jasprit Bumrah be able to construct?': R Ashwin tears into Mohammed Siraj

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised concerns over Mohammed Siraj 's performance in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, urging the pacer to focus on controlling the flow of runs rather than solely aiming for wickets. Siraj endured a tough outing, conceding runs at an economy rate of 4.05 and taking just two wickets across both innings. On a surface that offered little assistance to bowlers, Siraj gave away 122 runs in 27 overs in the first innings while claiming two wickets. His struggles continued in the second innings, where he went wicketless in 14 overs and conceded 51 runs. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "My only question to Siraj is... can you dry up the run flow? You don't have to pick up wickets. But can you not give away 4-5 runs every over? If runs are being leaked, then you have to bring Bumrah back into the attack. How many dams will Bumrah be able to construct?" Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Jasprit Bumrah stood out as India's best bowler in England's first innings, claiming a five-wicket haul. Prasidh Krishna also picked up three wickets but was expensive, conceding runs at an economy of 6.40. Spotted in Leeds! Indian Cricket Team Hits the Streets Ahead of 1st Test vs England "Also, he gets tired, and his spells are pushed, and by then, partnerships are forged. Or you'd have to go with Jadeja, who has to step in and stem the flow of runs. Prasidh is playing for the first time, and he is inexperienced. So Siraj has to play the bankable role. Remember how Morne Morkel used to bowl 2/43 in 20 overs? That should be his role. In Bazball, you could go for 2/58, I guess. Siraj has to play that role, and if he is effective in it, then it would make a huge difference," said Ashwin. The veteran spinner further emphasized that Test cricket is as much about support roles as it is about individual brilliance. Team India Reach Birmingham | Updates on Arrival & Schedule "I agree that wicket-taking is important in Test cricket. But in Test cricket, you also bowl for one another. Ishant Sharma used to do it wonderfully. He played the Morkel role very well. He would hold the pressure on one end, and would have given just 40-odd runs after an entire day's play. Of course, I am not asking Siraj to do the same, but regulate the leakage of runs," he added. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

"If Runs Are Being Leaked...": Mohammed Siraj Asked Tough Questions By Ravichandran Ashwin

Mohammed Siraj had a poor outing in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. On the surface that had no help for bowlers, the right-arm pacer struggled to pick wickets and also leaked runs at an economy of 4.05. Siraj bowled 27 overs in the first innings and picked up two wickets while leaking 122 runs. During the second innings, he bowled 14 overs and gave away 51 runs while failing to pick a single wicket. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the pacer to understand his role. "My only question to Siraj is... can you dry up the run flow? You don't have to pick up wickets. But can you not give away 4-5 runs every over? If runs are being leaked, then you have to bring Bumrah back into the attack. How many dams will Bumrah be able to construct? " Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout India bowler during England's first innings, picking up a five-wicket haul. Krishna too accounted for three wickets, but he leaked runs at an economy of 6.40. "Also, he gets tired, and his spells are pushed, and by then, partnerships are forged. Or you'd have to go with Jadeja, who has to step in and stem the flow of runs. Prasidh is playing for the first time, and he is inexperienced. So Siraj has to play the bankable role. What to expect from Gautam Gambhir & Shubman Gill ahead of Edgbaston?

CHENNAI: During the journey from England's north to the midlands, the Indian management will have been deep in thought with respect to the situation surrounding Jasprit Bumrah. He's the ultimate plug and play operator in world cricket but there's also the question about his workload. The allure of a Lord's Test may see Bumrah missing out from featuring at Edgbaston in the second Test, beginning next Wednesday. Even otherwise, Edgbaston has become a very Bazball ground. Since the beginning of 2022, teams average over 35 while scoring at 4 runs per over (average below 29 and 3.72 are the corresponding Lord's numbers). So, the smart money is on the management giving their star pacer a break as they manage his workload and fitness. It's kind of understandable why they want to be extra careful with him: he's already had a couple of big injuries, with the one in Sydney coming earlier this year. "I think for us to manage Bumrah's workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward and we know that what he brings to the table as well," coach Gautam Gambhir had said after the first Test. "So before he came on this tour, it was already decided that he's going to play three Test matches, but let's see how his body turns up. But we haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play." If Edgbaston, the venue where Bumrah captained India in a Test in 2022, is where he will get one of his two breaks, the one obvious question pertains to the make up of the bowling unit. The closest like for like replacement in terms of taking the new ball is Arshdeep Singh but they are different bowlers. But that will just be the one of the many jigsaws the think-tank will have to think about.

Brutal! 'We could've chased even 450': England batter over the moon after 1st Test victory

Jamie Smith of England is congratulated by captain Ben Stokes after winning the 1st Test Match against India at Headingley (Image by) England star Jos Buttler and former pacer Stuart Broad unpacked England's remarkable chase against India in the first Test at Headingley, suggesting the hosts could have overhauled an even steeper target than the 371 they eventually chased down. Speaking on their YouTube podcast 'For The Love of Cricket ', the duo praised England's aggressive intent and pinpointed key moments that turned the tide. India, powered by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, had set the tone with a commanding 471 in the first innings. But England hit back hard, wiping out the lead with a response that left them just six runs behind. India then added 364 in the third innings, only for England to chase down the 371-run target in style, thanks to a scintillating 149 from Ben Duckett and a composed finish from Jamie Smith. Reflecting on the effort, Buttler made a bold assertion. " I think it would've come down to time, but even if they were chasing 450, they'd have given it a go. They cruised that 370 ," he said, underlining how fluent and in-control England looked in the final innings. What India are doing in Birmingham today, practice schedule, plan and more He added that while the risk factor would naturally increase with a higher target, England's batting lineup, particularly their top seven, had the firepower and belief to back themselves. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo ' They'd have had to take more risks, but they'd definitely have had a go at it ,' Buttler stressed. The statement is in line with captain Ben Stokes' often-repeated mantra of not settling for draws, which is a hallmark of England's Bazball philosophy. Under coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes' leadership, England have routinely pursued challenging fourth-innings targets with unflinching drive. Poll Do you think England could have chased down a target of 450 runs? Yes, they would have succeeded No, that's too steep With a 1-0 lead and momentum firmly in their favour, England head to Edgbaston with a statement win and unmistakable intent to keep pushing boundaries.
