Hurling star DJ Carey has admitted falsely claiming he had cancer and defrauding people into paying him for treatment.
The former Kilkenny player (54) pleaded guilty to 10 deception charges when he appeared in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today.
He had been due to stand trial but entered the plea when he was formally arraigned before the court this morning.
Judge Patricia Ryan remanded him on continuing bail for a sentence hearing to take place on October 29 Carey pleaded guilty to dishonestly by deception inducing victims to make monetary payment to him after he fraudulently claimed to have cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment.
The charges are under Sections 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act.
Carey, from a large sporting family, is regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the game's history, winning five All-Ireland senior medals with Kilkenny, including 2003 when he captained the team.
He was twice named Hurler of the Year and won nine All Star awards.
After retiring from play in 2006, he managed the Kilkenny U21 hurlers and was a selector for the county senior team.

A woman in her 70s has died after a crash on Thursday morning. The collision involving a car and a truck happened around 10.30am at Platin Terrace, on the outskirts of Drogheda , Co Meath . The woman, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Her body has been moved to Our Lady's Hospital, in Navan. Gardaí and emergency services are attending the scene. READ MORE The road remains closed to allow forensic collision investigators to conduct examinations. Local diversions are now in place, a garda representative said. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them. Drivers with camera or dashcam footage from the area between 10am and 11am this morning are asked to make this available to Gardaí. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ashbourne Garda station (01 801 0600), or any Garda station. They can also call the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.

A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the death of an woman in Co Tipperary last summer. Josephine 'Joan' Ray (89) was found dead in her home at St Joseph's Park in Nenagh on August 4th of last year. She was last seen alive the previous day. In a statement on Thursday, gardaí said a man had been arrested in relation to the investigation. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Gardaí said their investigations are ongoing. READ MORE At the time of her death, Ms Ray was predeceased by her husband Paddy and daughter Joan. She was survived by her daughters Sarah, Frances, Mary and Carmel, as well as extended family. Gardaí immediately preserved the scene following the discovery of Ms Ray's body and members of the Garda National Technical Bureau travelled from Dublin to examine the scene. A senior investigating officer was appointed to lead the investigation, while a Garda family liaison officer was also assigned to support the family. Ms Ray was a native of Carney, 15km north of Nenagh. Paying tribute at the time, Tipperary Independent councillor Seamie Morris said she was 'a real character, who loved her fashion'. Ms Ray's neighbour, Michael O'Brien, described her as having a 'heart of gold, and I will dearly miss her and so will her many friends in St Joseph's Park and beyond'.

The defamation case taken by Ryan Casey, partner of murdered schoolteacher Ashling Murphy , against the BBC following comments made about his victim impact statement during a live broadcast has been settled, the High Court has heard. In a statement released after the settlement on Thursday, Mr Casey said the resolution of the case marked 'the end of a long and difficult chapter of frustration and censorship'. The BBC said it was 'happy to clarify' it does not consider Mr Casey to be 'someone guilty of, or attempting to, incite hatred'. Mr Casey had taken the case in relation to a BBC Northern Ireland broadcast of The View programme in November 2023. It related to Mr Casey's victim impact statement at the sentencing of Ms Murphy's murderer Josef Puska. READ MORE Ashling Murphy was killed at Cappincur, Tullamore, Co Offaly in January, 2022. At the High Court on Thursday, Alan Keating SC, for the BBC, read out a statement on the settlement of the case on behalf of the broadcaster. 'In the BBC's November 30th, 2023 episode of its live political programme The View, Mr Ryan Casey's victim impact statement at the sentencing of his late partner's murderer was discussed,' it said. 'The BBC stands by the journalism involved in this episode which debated serious issues of public interest. [ Who was Ashling Murphy? The 'shining light' teacher Opens in new window ] 'The BBC is happy to clarify that it does not consider Ryan Casey to be a criminal or a racist or someone guilty of or attempting to incite hatred, or someone seeking to pose as a hero of the far right through his victim impact statement. This statement clarifies any unintentional inferences that could have been drawn from the broadcast and has enabled the BBC and Ryan Casey to resolve this matter amicably.' It is understood the settlement is a six-figure sum. Mr Justice Alexander Owens then struck out the case and made no order. Jozef Puska (35) killed Ms Murphy (23) on January 12th, 2022, by repeatedly stabbing her in the neck after attacking her while she exercised along the canal towpath outside Tullamore. He was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence. Originally from Slovakia, he had lived in Offaly since 2015 with his wife and five children.
