Weather: Make the most of sunny weather while it lasts, forecaster says

New Zealanders should make the most of the good weather over the next couple of days as it is expected to take a turn towards the end of the weekend.
MetService is expecting settled and mostly sunny weather heading into the weekend, thanks to a high-pressure system.
"After some cold nights and frosty mornings recently, temperatures are expected to go up a few notches over the next few days," the forecasting agency said.
Friday morning may begin frosty, or foggy, with some temperatures in Canterbury in low single-digits, MetService said.
In the North Island, temperatures are forecast to hit double-digits on Friday afternoon and could persist overnight.
There is a chance of showers for the west, especially in the South Island, while the rest of the country should stay mostly clear with sunny skies through the weekend.
"People should enjoy the sunny weather through the weekend while they can, it's great for outdoor activities, but things may change toward the end of the weekend," MetService meteorologist Oscar Shiviti said.
On Sunday, MetService forecasts clouds to increase over the South Island, mostly in the west, as a rain-bearing front approaches from the northwest, possibly bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
"This system brings the potential for severe weather, so we encourage people to keep an eye on the MetService website for updates," Shiviti said.
"By early next week, the front will move north and may bring severe weather to those areas too. Warmer air with this system means nights will likely not be as cold as the new week begins."

MetService said there was a front moving east across the country which was expected to bring heavy rain, and strong north to northeast winds. Orange rain warnings were in place for the Tasman region from Motueka westwards, Tasman east and south of Motueka, Nelson and Marlborough west of Havelock and north of the Wairau River, Taranaki Maunga and the ranges of the Westland District. The warning for Tasman from Motueka westwards would be in place from 2am to 6pm on Tuesday, 29 July, and had a moderate chance of upgrading to a red warning. People in the region were to expect between 130mm and 150mm in a strong northerly flow. Rainfall intensities could reach 15 to 20mm per hour, especially from mid-morning until early afternoon, MetService said. Tasman east and south of Motueka, Nelson and Marlborough west of Havelock and north of the Wairau River would be under orange warning from 5am on Tuesday until 9pm, again with a moderate chance of becoming red. There, 100mm to 130 mm of rain in a strong northerly flow was expected, with rainfall intensities of 15mm per hour possible, especially during the afternoon. The Nelson Tasman region has already been gutted by two major floods since late last month and is in an official recovery period. Residents were advised to clear their drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain, and to avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously, MetService said. Taranaki Maunga was under orange warning from 7am on Tuesday to 1am Wednesday, while the ranges of Westland District were under the same from 1am to 5pm Tuesday. Both warnings had a minimal chance of upgrading to red. Heavy rain watches would also be in place for many regions around the motu between Monday and Tuesday, and in some cases through to Wednesday. Watches for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and an area about and within 15km east of the Divide from Arthur's Pass to the Dart River had a high chance of upgrading to a warning, while those for for the Central North Island mountains, Northland and Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, all had a moderate chance of upgrading. Along with their rain watches, Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island would be under a strong wind watch from Monday evening, with both watches given a moderate chance of upgrading to warnings. Strong wind watches would also be in place for The Coromandel Peninsula, eastern Waikato and the Bay of Plenty for most of Tuesday, and about and south of the mountains and high-country from Taranaki to the Central Plateau from late Monday evening through to Tuesday evening. The Coromandel Peninsula, eastern Waikato and the Bay of Plenty had a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning, while the areas about and south of the mountains and high-country from Taranaki to the Central Plateau had a high chance of upgrading, MetService said. Canterbury scrub fire contained by FENZ

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) was called to the blaze at Waimakariri riverbank, near the Gorge Bridge, at 9pm on Saturday. Incident Controller Graeme Knight said the fire was about 60ha in size and had burnt through gorse, broom and pine trees. Three helicopters had been assisting firefighters on Sunday morning. A cause has not yet been determined but a fire investigator has been notified. Police were also investigating a flurry of fires in other parts of the district on Sunday morning, including Darfield and Rolleston, all of which are being deemed suspicious. Three helicopters fight vegetation blaze in Sheffield, Canterbury

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) was called to the blaze at Waimakariri riverbank, near the Gorge Bridge, at 9pm on Saturday. Due to its location and it burning through gorse, it was too dangerous to fight the blaze on Saturday. FENZ could not say how big the fire was, but at 2am on Sunday it was 300 by 50 square metres. A spokesperson said three helicopters and more firefighters would go to the scene at sunrise on Sunday to fight the blaze.
