KUALA LUMPUR: Most Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are still trailing behind larger enterprises in their digitalisation journey, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
He adds that to address the issue, the ministry is working hard through initiatives like the Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI), recently launched by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, to help SMEs accelerate the adoption of digital technology in their operations.
'The Madani Government has also set aside RM50 million for digital matching grants for SMEs and digital grants for vendors.
'Global technology companies based in Malaysia, such as Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud, are working closely with the government to assist SMEs through multiple programmes,' he said in his keynote address at the CTOS SME Biz Day 2025 yesterday.

Explaining further, Gobind said the government was also committed to ensuring that SMEs would be prioritised in navigating current geopolitical challenges, with funds allocated for this purpose, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Monday.
He said the government's initiatives have always been designed to provide SMEs with the resources, knowledge, and support they need to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
'Our vision is to create a digitally empowered Malaysia – where every business, regardless of size, can thrive in our national digital ecosystem.
'We are committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation, digital adoption, and ultimately, building up Malaysia as a strong digital nation,' added Gobind.
On Monday, Anwar announced that the government had agreed to increase government guarantees under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme by RM1 billion to assist SMEs affected by the recent US tariff announcement in securing loans from commercial banks.
Additionally, another RM50 million would be allocated to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) to expedite efforts for SMEs to explore new markets through participation in international trade expos and exhibitions, as well as facilitating business matching with foreign buyers. – Bernama digitalisation Gobind Singh Deo small medium entreprises tariffs

Ahmad Zahid wants Malaysia's rural agenda to serve as regional model for Asean
PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that Malaysia's rural development agenda can serve as a model for the Asean region. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry would continue to elevate the rural development agenda to the regional stage when it hosts the Asean Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Asean Master Plan on Rural Development again this October. In addition, Malaysia would host the Asean+3 Forum on Empowering Rural Women and Digitalisation. "Let us use this platform to showcase our best practices and position Malaysia's rural development agenda as both a regional aspiration and reference point. Malaysia must set the example for the entire region," he said at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's monthly assembly here on Tuesday (July 1). Ahmad Zahid said his ministry has been given the mandate to plan rural community development, with an allocation of nearly RM12bil, of which RM3.37bil has been spent to date. He said the recently launched Desa Kirana initiative was being hailed as a game changer in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. According to him, the initiative aims to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy by empowering cultural heritage, natural attractions, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and a variety of rural-based activities. "I hope to one day see our rural gems - from Arau to Kudat, from Sabah's interior to the coast of Sarawak - emerge as world-class tourist destinations. Just like Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Shirakawa-go in Japan, or Ubud in Bali - places that were once quiet but now stand proudly on the global tourism map," he said. Ahmad Zahid also said that his ministry would organise a three-dimensional Mega Carnival, which will bring together three major events simultaneously: the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival, Felda Settlers' Day, and the One District One Industry initiative. "This marks another major shift - a strategic effort to elevate rural entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the national and international levels," he said. Meanwhile, he also called on the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, to review the existing training system. During the assembly, Ahmad Zahid expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the ministry's staff throughout his 940-day leadership of the ministry. – Bernama

UMS to expand reach via Bursa secondary listing
An SGX sign at the Singapore Stock Exchange. — Reuters KUALA LUMPUR: Slated to be listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia on Aug 1, high-precision engineering and manufacturing company UMS Integration Ltd – currently listed on the Mainboard of the Singapore Exchange (SGX) – says it will continue to expand its role within the semiconductor and aerospace value chains. Chief executive officer Andy Luong said the Singapore-headquartered company's impending secondary listing will enhance the group's visibility across the South-East Asian region and boost its position as an integrated service provider for global chip companies. 'Within the semiconductor space, we see opportunities in manufacturing high-precision components used in advanced packaging solutions, which play a vital role in enabling next-generation artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications,' he said at a press briefing here yesterday. Given current global trade tensions, Luong added that Malaysia and Singapore are well-positioned to benefit from various outsourcing opportunities. 'We have the resources to serve the people as well, ' he said. Executive director, group financial controller and senior vice-president of operations Stanley Loh Meng Chong said Malaysia is a suitable place for the company's secondary listing due to several factors, including its plant located in Penang. He said UMS had pursued a dual listing in South Korea in 2010, but the plan fell through after the stock exchange regulators clamped down on overseas secondary listings following a fraud case involving a Chinese company. Loh added that Malaysia 'is a better place to raise funds and grow the business.' He believes that UMS is better run compared to its Malaysian peers, with stronger profit margins and dividend yields. 'In Singapore, typically our valuations are lower. We hope that by coming to Malaysia, it will help us to be valued more fairly versus our peers,' Loh said. UMS yesterday issued its prospectus for the secondary listing, which will be undertaken by way of introduction and will not involve any issuance or offering of shares. UMS shares will be fully fungible, meaning shareholders can transfer their shares between the SGX Mainboard and Bursa Malaysia's Main Market for trading. TA Securities Holdings Bhd is the principal adviser, while CGS International Securities Malaysia is the financial adviser for the exercise. At last look, UMS's market capitalisation was approximately S$945mil (equivalent to about RM3.13bil). It recorded revenue of S$242.1mil for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, while profit after tax stood at S$40.6mil, translating into a margin of 16.8%.

JS-SEZ, RTS link to boost Johor property market
JOHOR BARU: Johor's property market is expected to enter a new phase of growth following the signing of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement and the ongoing development of the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Real estate services company Nawawie Tie said in a statement that residential property demand is expected to grow gradually particularly in the rental market. 'Residential property demand in Johor is led by locals, Malaysians working in Singapore, and Singaporeans with the JS-SEZ poised to attract greater foreign interest 'While residential property demand is expected to grow progressively, owner occupiers are likely to remain cautious until there is greater clarity on supporting policies and infrastructure rollouts. 'Landed properties continue to be the preferred choice for buyers, representing 65% of total transactions in Johor and the Johor Baru district accounted for 60% of these transactions,' according to the statement. Meanwhile, the industrial property market in the Johor Baru district is projected to thrive, driven by the expansion of the manufacturing sector and rising foreign direct investment. Johor is also emerging as a key regional hub for data centres, further boosting demand for industrial properties. In the first quarter of this year, a total of 353 housing units were transacted in Johor, with terraced units and semi-detached units being the most prominent. Johor Baru remains the preferred location for industrial players. — Bernama
