Elite Rowers Face Lasting Atrial Fibrillation Risk

Former world-class rowers have an elevated risk for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the years after retirement, according to an observational case-control study.
Researchers found 1 in 5 former Olympic, world, or national-level Australian rowers aged 45-80 years had the heart rhythm anomaly. The ex-rowers, who had competed for at least 10 years, were nearly seven times more likely to have been diagnosed with AF compared to a control group. During a follow-up period of around 4 years, new cases of AF were also higher among the ex-rowers (6.3% vs 2.3%), according to the researchers, who published their findings last month in the European Heart Journal .
'As a clinician, I was not surprised that rowers experienced more AF,' said André La Gerche, PhD, MD, a cardiologist and head of the Heart Exercise And Research Trials Lab at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and senior author of the study. 'However, I was very surprised by the magnitude of the difference. Furthermore, I learnt that the risk persists years after retirement and is not just due to genetic factors.'

The findings are 'consistent with prior research demonstrating that endurance athletes — especially highly trained endurance athletes — seem to have this higher risk of AF,' said Gregory Marcus, MD, MAS, a cardiac electrophysiologist and the inaugural Endowed Professor of Atrial Fibrillation Research at the University of California, San Francisco.

'These numbers nudge me in the direction of more aggressively screening for AF specifically in masters-aged rowers, such as with the use of Holter monitors or wearable devices approved to detect AF,' said Jeffrey Hsu, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

La Gerche and his team captured data from 121 former rowers — 75% men, all White, with a median age of 62 years — who were matched with more than 11,000 control individuals from the UK Biobank who had never rowed and had varying fitness levels. The ex-rowers had similar rates of ischemic heart disease and diabetes as did the control individuals, but lower blood pressure. They also were less likely to have ever smoked.
The athletes showed persistent changes in cardiac function after retirement. Ex-rowers had larger left ventricles, lower heart rates, longer PQ intervals, and longer QT intervals compared to control individuals.
The research, 'raises the question of whether certain types of intensive exercise — like elite-level competitive rowing — leads to long-lasting, perhaps even irreversible, enlargement of the cardiac chambers,' Hsu said.
Genetics factored into the risk for AF among both groups. While the prevalence of rare variants in genes associated with cardiomyopathy was low across the study, the combined risk for individual genes associated with AF was a strong predictor of the disease in both athletes (odds ratio [OR], 3.7) and nonathletes (OR, 2.0). The proportions were similar between them ( P = .37), indicating genetics did not fully account for the increased risk in the ex-rowers, La Gerche said.
Marcus flagged a few factors that may have skewed the results. The former athletes tended to be tall, White, and in many cases, drank more alcohol than control individuals — all of these factors increase the risk for AF.
Because the ex-rowers volunteered for a cardiovascular study, selection bias could have skewed prevalence higher, Marcus said. After a sensitivity analysis, ex-rowers still had a 2.5-fold higher risk for AF in the case of a 100% selection bias.
La Gerche emphasized the findings shouldn't dissuade clinicians from encouraging regular exercise or high-level sports training.
'The overall health outcomes of these rowers are generally superb,' La Gerche said. 'Rather, this highlights an important 'Achilles heel' that requires attention and, ideally, effective prevention strategies so that sports can be enjoyed by more people, more often.'
The study was funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council. La Gerche, Hsu, and Marcus reported having no relevant financial conflicts of interest.

As Australia prepares to massively expand offshore wind farms across six priority zones, a group of researchers is racing to unlock the mystery of how much of a risk their blades pose to migratory seabirds. During high winds, 100 to 200-metre-long wind farm blades can rotate at 290km/h, theoretically making mincemeat out of anything that collides with them. While this sounds alarming, it's not known whether seabirds are actually flying at the height they operate at. Monash University's Dr Mark Miller and his team studied how high, fast and at what time of day iconic migratory species like albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters and storm-petrels tend to fly. And while there's still more work to be done, their newly published study indicates the risk could be low. 'These offshore wind turbines are huge, and the distance between the bottom of the blade and the sea surface is around 35 metres. So if you could say all the birds fly under 35 metres, then that's mitigating a lot of the collision risk,' he told Yahoo News. 'What the evidence is telling us is that seabirds fly quite low to the water, but the point is that the evidence is very limited.' If it's confirmed that all birds in their path fly low to the water, then raising the height of turbines could provide a simple solution that reduces collision risk. But more research would be required to better understand the flight paths of other birds, like the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot and swift parrot, which migrate from Tasmania to the mainland. The impact of turbines is likely to be lower than other threats like plastic ingestion, commercial fishing, habitat destruction and climate change, which are thought to be contributing to the deaths of over a million seabirds a year. But migratory seabirds cannot afford to face any new dangers. Around a third are threatened with extinction, and populations have reduced by 70 per cent in just 50 years. Not only is seabird flight data limited, but so is information about how many birds offshore wind farms kill. 'Onshore, if something gets hit, you have people doing surveys. But at the moment, if a bird collides with an offshore turbine, it falls in the sea, and you have no evidence of that mortality,' Miller said. While there are plans to install cameras on offshore turbines, once the farms are installed it will be too late to modify them. Study co-author Associate Professor Rohan Clarke said it's possible to ensure that new renewable energy projects are good for both humans and wildlife. 'One of the key challenges we face is what's known as the 'green-green dilemma', where initiatives designed to reduce environmental impact, such as renewable energy development, can unintentionally harm other ecological values,' he said. 'But we must identify evidence-based solutions to these competing priorities, because climate change remains the single greatest threat to biodiversity. China wants AI in expanded trade deal with Australia

Strengthening ties between Chinese and Australian artificial intelligence researchers could be on the agenda when the prime minister visits China this week, as Beijing seeks to capitalise on trade tensions with the US. With President Donald Trump's tariffs straining relations with Australia's traditionally closest ally, China's top diplomat in Australia Xiao Qian has called for greater collaboration in fields like AI, healthcare and green energy under a revised free-trade deal between the two nations. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit to China on Saturday comes as the Sino-Australian relationship continues to build following a downturn in relations under former Liberal prime minister Scott Morrison. "China and Australia are natural partners with complementary economic strengths," Mr Xiao wrote in an opinion piece published in the Australian Financial Review on Monday. "Standing at a new historical starting point, now is the time to advance bilateral relations with steady progress." Trade volumes between the two nations have bounced back after China lifted sanctions on Australian exports. The ambassador believes Mr Albanese's visit marks an opportunity to broaden the terms of the 10-year-old free-trade agreement. "We are willing to review the agreement with a more open attitude and higher standard, further consolidate co-operation in traditional areas such as agriculture and mining, and actively explore new growth areas in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, healthcare, green energy, and the digital economy, elevating practical co-operation to new heights," Mr Xiao wrote. The promotion of AI ties, amid the Albanese government's agenda to boost productivity, follows similar provisions in recently signed trade deals between Australia and partners such as Singapore, the UK and the UAE. These clauses encourage sharing AI research and commercialisation opportunities between the countries, as well as promoting its responsible use. There are attractive opportunities to deepen research collaboration in the fundamental science of AI, even though there are challenges to expanding the use of Chinese AI programs in Australia, said UNSW Professor Toby Walsh. "It's going to be very hard for us to have too deep relationships within terms of AI, because you can touch upon things like data sovereignty and various other things that we value," the AI expert told AAP. "It's not like just sending them gold and they take it, and that's the end of the partnership. "Sharing technologies like AI could pose significant national security and other risks." Allowing Chinese tech companies access to the Australian market has been a sore spot in the bilateral relationship. In 2018, then-Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull banned the Chinese tech giant Huawei from developing 5G infrastructure in Australia over concerns the Chinese government could force the company to hand over Australians' data or interfere with the network. The decision prompted strenuous protests from Beijing and was a factor behind a subsequent diplomatic fallout. Prof Walsh said there were still areas where collaboration could be beneficial without forfeiting Australian security. "It's about exchanging people, it's training, it's us going to work with them and them coming to work with us," he said. "So it's things that we've always done in terms of scientific exchange, supercharging our science, supercharging their science, and then building our own business off the back of that scientific knowledge. "China will be interested in partnering with us. "We have wonderful medical data, and we have a joined-up healthcare system. "There's huge value in those national data sets we have that no one else has." As the US drives a wedge through a fragmenting global order, Mr Xiao framed China as a like-minded partner for Australia - one that shares Australia's interests in pushing back against unilateralism and protectionism. China is willing to work with Australia to strengthen multilateral organisations like the United Nations and ASEAN, safeguard regional peace and the international rules-based order, and advocate for free trade, the ambassador said. Assistant Trade Minister Matt Thistlethwaite said the government was seeking to strengthen access to China - Australia's largest trading partner - in the best interests of Australians.
