Big question remains over wind farm 'risk' as major projects begin in Australia

As Australia prepares to massively expand offshore wind farms across six priority zones, a group of researchers is racing to unlock the mystery of how much of a risk their blades pose to migratory seabirds.
During high winds, 100 to 200-metre-long wind farm blades can rotate at 290km/h, theoretically making mincemeat out of anything that collides with them. While this sounds alarming, it's not known whether seabirds are actually flying at the height they operate at.
Monash University's Dr Mark Miller and his team studied how high, fast and at what time of day iconic migratory species like albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters and storm-petrels tend to fly. And while there's still more work to be done, their newly published study indicates the risk could be low.
'These offshore wind turbines are huge, and the distance between the bottom of the blade and the sea surface is around 35 metres. So if you could say all the birds fly under 35 metres, then that's mitigating a lot of the collision risk,' he told Yahoo News.
'What the evidence is telling us is that seabirds fly quite low to the water, but the point is that the evidence is very limited.'
If it's confirmed that all birds in their path fly low to the water, then raising the height of turbines could provide a simple solution that reduces collision risk.
But more research would be required to better understand the flight paths of other birds, like the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot and swift parrot, which migrate from Tasmania to the mainland.
The impact of turbines is likely to be lower than other threats like plastic ingestion, commercial fishing, habitat destruction and climate change, which are thought to be contributing to the deaths of over a million seabirds a year.
But migratory seabirds cannot afford to face any new dangers. Around a third are threatened with extinction, and populations have reduced by 70 per cent in just 50 years.
Not only is seabird flight data limited, but so is information about how many birds offshore wind farms kill.
'Onshore, if something gets hit, you have people doing surveys. But at the moment, if a bird collides with an offshore turbine, it falls in the sea, and you have no evidence of that mortality,' Miller said.
While there are plans to install cameras on offshore turbines, once the farms are installed it will be too late to modify them. And they'll sit in place for 20 to 40 years.

The Monash team is hoping their study, which was published in the Journal of Applied Ecology will help guide policymakers and the wind farm industry before construction begins.
Study co-author Associate Professor Rohan Clarke said it's possible to ensure that new renewable energy projects are good for both humans and wildlife.
'One of the key challenges we face is what's known as the 'green-green dilemma', where initiatives designed to reduce environmental impact, such as renewable energy development, can unintentionally harm other ecological values,' he said.
'But we must identify evidence-based solutions to these competing priorities, because climate change remains the single greatest threat to biodiversity. The energy transition isn't optional, it's essential, and finding solutions that support both climate goals and nature is critical.'

In response to the Trump administration's wide-ranging science cuts and grant cancellations, researchers and scientists staged a 'science fair' in the lobby of a Congressional building in Washington D.C. to bring awareness to what potential knowledge the United States could miss out on as a result. The fair is being held just days after Trump signed the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' into law, which codifies many spending cuts and funding cancellations for scientific endeavors of all types—from climate research to medical trials. Billions of dollars that were destined for researchers and scientists in the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other organizations. In effect, the U.S. is ceding its place as a leader in research and development—a role it has held for decades, and which has led to the development of cures for diseases and disorders, advanced military technology, and, of course, put a man on the moon. The funding cuts and cancellations are widespread, and it's difficult to lasso them all. But even with what's been cancelled or clawed back so far, Trump is looking to reduce spending on science further. In the budget request he released in May, billions more would be cut from NIH, NSF, the Department of Education, and completely eliminate funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, and more. In response, Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), released a statement saying just how dangerous the cuts could be. 'If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America's global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation's future health, security and prosperity. This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President's call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership,' he wrote. 'Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President's call. That's all to say that despite the demonstrations by scientists, and the potential long-term economic effects of cuts, the Trump administration may still not be done. Just within the past couple of days, Trump cut off researchers in the U.K. from utilizing data collected by U.S. satellites to study pollution and climate change, according to reporting from the U.K.-based The i Paper. Per that report, Rachel Cauley, OMB communications director at the White House, responded to worried scientists by saying that 'President Trump ran on defunding woke, weaponized, and wasteful government and his budget proudly does that by cutting funding for the Green New Scam, projects like 'gender-responsive agricultural adaptation' in Guatemala and Mexico, and 'Equity Climate and Health' workshops for 'transgender women, and those who identify as non-binary.' Under Trump's leadership, the US is funding real science again.'

Surprise Discovery Could Rewrite What We Know About Alzheimer's

A new study just uncovered a surprising link between how brain cells manage sugar and the progression of Alzheimer's disease—and the implications could reshape future treatments. Researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging have discovered that stored glucose, in the form of glycogen, may not be the passive energy reserve scientists once assumed. Instead, it may actively contribute to the buildup of tau proteins, a hallmark of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Tauopathies like Alzheimer's are characterized by toxic tangles of tau inside neurons. But this study, published in Nature Metabolism, found that those tangles may form, at least in part, because of disruptions in how glycogen is processed in the brain. 'Stored glycogen doesn't just sit there in the brain,' said Buck Institute biologist Pankaj Kapahi. 'It is involved in pathology.' Using fruit fly models and postmortem brain cells from people with Alzheimer's, scientists found elevated levels of both tau and glycogen. The buildup appeared to be driven by a breakdown in how glycogen is metabolized, specifically through the enzyme glycogen phosphorylase (GlyP), which normally helps convert glycogen into usable fuel. When researchers increased GlyP activity in the flies, they saw significant benefits. Brain cells reduced oxidative stress, protected themselves better, and even lived longer. The team also tested whether a low-protein diet, already linked to improved brain health, might produce similar effects. It did. Fruit flies fed this restricted diet showed fewer signs of damage and extended lifespans, suggesting that dietary changes could naturally shift brain metabolism in a protective direction. Even more intriguing, the researchers developed a drug that mimicked the effect of dietary restriction. It worked. And they noted potential crossover with medications like Ozempic, which may also support brain health by targeting glycogen-related pathways. 'By discovering how neurons manage sugar,' said lead researcher Sudipta Bar, 'we may have unearthed a novel therapeutic strategy—one that targets the cell's inner chemistry to fight age-related decline.'
