Red Sox RHP Kutter Crawford (wrist) 'likely' out for season

Reuters4 days ago

June 25 - A knee injury has kept Kutter Crawford from making his 2025 debut for the Boston Red Sox, but a more recent ailment is expected to keep the right-handed pitcher sidelined for the rest of the season.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ahead of his team's series finale at the Los Angeles Angels, Boston manager Alex Cora said that Crawford will undergo right wrist surgery and is "likely" out for the year.
Crawford, 29, opened the season on the injured list with right patellar tendinopathy. He battled through a knee injury throughout the 2024 season, during which he made a career-high 33 starts and 183 2/3 innings pitched. The injury reportedly subsided with treatment over the winter before flaring up just before spring training.
According to Cora, Crawford injured his wrist in an off-field incident, although the manager did not provide additional details other than emphasizing that it was not due to irresponsible activity. Cora first made mention of Crawford's latest injury while the Red Sox were in San Francisco over the weekend, noting that the pitcher was flying to Boston for an MRI on his wrist.
In parts of four seasons with Boston (2021-24), Crawford has gone 18-31 in 86 games (69 starts) with a 4.56 ERA, 118 walks and 389 strikeouts, including a career-best 175 in 2024.

Chelsea agree £50m deal for Premier League star as Enzo Maresca closes in on second summer signing - but will he join Blues' Club World Cup squad?

Chelsea have reached an agreement worth more than £50million with Brighton to sign Joao Pedro, beating Newcastle to the 23-year-old Brazilian. Pedro was understood to have made it clear that Enzo Maresca 's side were his preference once senior officials at Stamford Bridge enquired on the versatile attacker. A seven-year contract is in the works. Pedro will follow a well-trodden path from Brighton to Chelsea, after Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez made the same move. Levi Colwill also spent time on loan with the Seagulls previously. Chelsea have until July 3 — the day before they play Palmeiras in Philadelphia — to make new additions to their Club World Cup squad in the United States. Pedro is admired by Maresca because he can play across a front line and is expected to fly to the US to join his new team-mates. Chelsea have already landed Liam Delap for £30m in this window, and are set to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for around £55m. Pedro missed the end of Brighton's season after a training-ground altercation with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke.

Chelsea did well after 'disruptive' delay

Chelsea captain Reece James has lauded his team-mates after the club survived a 'disruptive', nearly two-hour, extreme weather delay at the Club World Cup. James opened the scoring against Benfica in the 65th minute and the Blues looked on course to win before the lengthy stoppage, and Benfica returned to score a penalty through Angel di after a red card for Gianluca Prestianni, Chelsea then scored three goals in extra was critical of the difficult conditions in Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium but praised his team-mates: "It wasn't probably the most difficult [game] for 85 minutes and then we had to sit and wait for I don't know how long," James said."It took a lot out of the players. We cooled down and it was quite disruptive when you're in the flow of the game. We needed to restart the engine. "We were keeping the legs going on the bike - a little bit of stretching, some music to keep the vibes there. It was in the back of my mind that the game wouldn't be completed."It was difficult. The climate was very hot and humid. The pitch wasn't the best but we got the job done. "We came so close the end and it was difficult to get that kick in the teeth, but to go on and score three goals probably shows how far we have come. The red card probably helped with that, but we did well to get over the line."Chelsea next face Palmeiras in Philadelphia in the quarter-final on Friday and James added: "They're amazing players and a good side. We're going to set out to win.'We have confidence in what our goals are going into the game, how we want to play, our structure, defensively and offensively. I think that's more important to us. We have our structure right and we'll achieve what we want to achieve."
