BREAKING NEWS MLB pitcher out for the season after mysterious 'accident' leaves him needing surgery

Boston Red Sox are set to be without pitcher Kutter Crawford for the rest of 2025 after an accident left him needing wrist surgery. The Sox were coy over exactly what has happened to one of their starters. Crawford was already on the 60-day injured list with a knee issue but they were anticipating his return as a starter this season. 'He's down. It's been a tough year for him,' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before the team faced the Los Angeles Angels. 'It's just an accident.' Cora added that Crawford was not doing anything 'irresponsible' but did not say exactly how the 29-year-old got hurt. 'Kutter is going to have wrst surgery. When, we don't know yet,' he added. 'It is one of those that sucks, right? 'We were talking about how deep were in spring training, the options we had in the starting rotation and now it is getting thinner and thinner. 'From spring training to getting ready to this, it happened and now surgery. It hasn't been a great year for him.' Cora first made mention of Crawford's latest injury while the Red Sox were in San Francisco over the weekend, noting that the pitcher was flying to Boston for an MRI on his wrist. The Red Sox lost to the Angels 5-2 on Wednesday, leaving them 40-42 for the season ahead of a three-game series against AL East rivals Toronto Blue Jays. Crawford was one of baseball's most durable pitchers in 2024 despite pitching most of the season with patellar-tendon discomfort, leading the Red Sox with 183 2/3 innings pitched and 175 strikeouts, but he also gave up a major league-high 34 homers. Crawford hoped to recover with a full winter of rest and rehabilitation, but he suffered a setback during the offseason and was unable to pitch in spring training. He was placed on the 60-day injured list in March. Cora also said that third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been out since May 23 because of a quadriceps injury, probably won´t return until after the All-Star break.

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford likely out for the season after off-field ‘accident'

The depth of the Red Sox will continue to be tested. Starting pitcher Kutter Crawford will have what is 'likely' season-ending wrist surgery after an off-field 'accident,' manager Alex Cora told reporters Wednesday. Cora said the injury was not caused by doing anything 'irresponsible.' Advertisement 'He's down. It's been a tough year for him,' Cora said before Boston took on the Angels in Anaheim. AP Crawford was already on the 60-day injured list due to a right knee injury, which he played through during the entire 2024 season. Advertisement While Crawford expected he would be ready for this year, he suffered a setback in the winter. But now, it looks like his entire 2025 is in peril. Last season, Crawford went 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA, but what the right-hander importantly brought to the Red Sox's rotation was reliability. He made 33 starts, which was tied for the most in the American League, all while tallying 183⅔ innings. Without Crawford, the Red Sox starters have a 4.29 ERA this season, ranking 22nd in MLB. Advertisement The 29-year-old Crawford is far from the only player the Red Sox have lost this season. Slugging first baseman Tristan Casas, while running to first base, ruptured his left patellar tendon in May. On top of that, Alex Bregman will not return until the All-Star break with a right quad issue, while outfielder Masataka Yoshida has been out all season after undergoing labrum surgery in his right shoulder in the offseason and getting shut down in spring training. Through all of the injuries and the blockbuster trade, the Red Sox are sitting at 40-41 heading into Wednesday's game, though top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer are now being given a chance as the team looks to right the ship.

Red Sox RHP Kutter Crawford (wrist) 'likely' out for season

June 25 - A knee injury has kept Kutter Crawford from making his 2025 debut for the Boston Red Sox, but a more recent ailment is expected to keep the right-handed pitcher sidelined for the rest of the season. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ahead of his team's series finale at the Los Angeles Angels, Boston manager Alex Cora said that Crawford will undergo right wrist surgery and is "likely" out for the year. Crawford, 29, opened the season on the injured list with right patellar tendinopathy. He battled through a knee injury throughout the 2024 season, during which he made a career-high 33 starts and 183 2/3 innings pitched. The injury reportedly subsided with treatment over the winter before flaring up just before spring training. According to Cora, Crawford injured his wrist in an off-field incident, although the manager did not provide additional details other than emphasizing that it was not due to irresponsible activity. Cora first made mention of Crawford's latest injury while the Red Sox were in San Francisco over the weekend, noting that the pitcher was flying to Boston for an MRI on his wrist. In parts of four seasons with Boston (2021-24), Crawford has gone 18-31 in 86 games (69 starts) with a 4.56 ERA, 118 walks and 389 strikeouts, including a career-best 175 in 2024. --Field Level Media

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford's off-field 'accident' requires season-ending wrist surgery

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Kutter Crawford had an off-field 'accident' that requires season-ending surgery on his right throwing wrist, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said on Wednesday, adding that the 29-year-old wasn't doing anything 'irresponsible.' 'It hasn't been a great year for him,' Cora said. 'It (stinks) that it happened this way, but it's just an accident.' Crawford has been sidelined all season by a right-knee injury that he initially suffered in his third game of 2024, a season in which he went 9-6 with a 4.36 ERA in 33 starts, tied for the most starts in the American League. 'It (stinks) because we were talking about how deep we were in spring training, and the options that we had in the rotation,' Cora said before the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. 'And now it's getting thinner and thinner.' Crawford was one of baseball's most durable pitchers in 2024 despite pitching most of the season with patellar-tendon discomfort, leading the Red Sox with 183 ⅔ innings pitched and 175 strikeouts, but he also gave up a major league-high 34 homers. Crawford hoped to recover with a full winter of rest and rehabilitation, but he suffered a setback during the offseason and was unable to pitch in spring training. He was placed on the 60-day injured list in March. Cora also said that third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been out since May 23 because of a quadriceps injury, probably won't return until after the All-Star break. Bregman, who was batting .299 with a .938 OPS, 11 homers, 17 doubles, 35 RBIs and 32 runs in 51 games when he suffered the injury, has been running but has not resumed baseball activities. ___ AP MLB:

Kutter Crawford to have wrist surgery, ‘likely' out for the season

Boston Red Sox right-hander Kutter Crawford's 2025 season is likely over before it even begins. Manager Alex Cora told reporters in Anaheim on Wednesday that Crawford, who's been on the injured list since the start of the season, will have right wrist surgery and is 'likely' out for the season. RHP Kutter Crawford will undergo what will likely be season-ending surgery on his right wrist. Stemmed from something off the field, which Red Sox wouldn't specify, but Alex Cora said it was an 'accident,' and not irresponsible behavior. — Sean McAdam (@Sean_McAdam) June 25, 2025 The 29-year-old began the season on the IL with right patellar tendinopathy. Crawford, who made a career-high 33 starts and 183 2/3 innings pitched last season, battled a knee injury throughout 2024. The issue subsided with treatment over the winter, but then flared up again before spring training. Advertisement However, the wrist injury is a more recent development. Cora told reporters Crawford injured his wrist in an off-field incident, but wouldn't elaborate other than to say it was not from irresponsible activity. Cora had first revealed Crawford's setback over the weekend in San Francisco, noting that Crawford was flying from Fort Myers, Fla., where he'd been rehabbing, to Boston for an MRI on his wrist. In addition to Crawford, the Red Sox have had six other starters spend time on the IL this season. Lucas Giolito (hamstring) and Brayan Bello (shoulder strain) missed the start of the season, and Walker Buehler missed a few weeks in May with shoulder bursitis. Richard Fitts, who started on Wednesday in Anaheim, missed six weeks with a right pectoral strain. All four starters, along with Garrett Crochet, currently make up what has been a revolving door rotation this season for the Red Sox. The injuries extend beyond that group, as well. Right-hander Tanner Houck has been out since May 14 with a flexor pronator strain, while right-hander Hunter Dobbins landed on the IL this past weekend with an elbow strain. Houck has been roughed up in two rehab starts with Triple-A Worcester, allowing five earned runs across 2 2/3 innings combined. The loss of Crawford doesn't immediately impact the Red Sox as he had not been a part of the rotation mix this season and there had been no timetable for his return. But it does further dig into the team's pitching depth. Left-hander Kyle Harrison, acquired in the Rafael Devers trade last week, is set to make his first start for Worcester on Thursday and will be an option for the big-league rotation, if needed. Prior to the trade, he appeared in eight games, making four starts, for San Francisco this season, posting a 4.56 ERA. He has a 3.46 ERA in 26 innings over six Triple-A starts, as well. Once tabbed as the best left-handed starting pitching prospect in the game, Harrison, 23, didn't reach his full potential with the Giants, but has been working in Worcester to regain his form. Advertisement Right-handers Cooper Criswell and Robert Stock have bounced back-and-forth between Boston and Worcester this season and represent the most immediate depth starter options should the need arise. Further down the depth chart, right-hander David Sandlin started a combined no-hitter in Double-A Portland this week and has a 3.90 ERA in 12 games, 11 starts. Left-hander Payton Tolle, a 2024 second-round pick, was recently promoted to Double A after a 3.62 ERA in 11 games, 10 starts, for High-A Greenville. Sandlin and Tolle likely aren't options for the big league rotation this season, but it's possible they see time in the majors late in the second half.
