Former team mate holds fitness fundraiser for family of Rochdale legend Joe Thompson
A friend and former teammate of the late Rochdale footballerJoe Thompson is holding a non-stop fitness session to raise money for Joe's family.
Simon Ramsden played at Rochdale FC with Joe for six years. He is taking on the massive challenge of a 37 hour non stop fitness session, accompanied by friends and former colleagues.
He said: "One of Joe's sayings in life is "don't live life to survive, live life to thrive' and I think that's absolutely right.
"I'm doing 37 hours, and seven rhymes with heaven, so I could have taken the easy option and done 27 or a lesser number, but Joe never did anything by half, so I don't think I should either."
Thompson - who battled cancer on three occasions - died at the age of 36 in April 2025.
He played more than 200 games for Rochdale, and was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 while playing for Tranmere.
He later signed for Bury and spent time on loan at Southport and Wrexham as he tried to build his match fitness following treatment.
He returned to Rochdale from Carlisle in 2016 but the disease soon returned, requiring extensive treatment.
Thompson announced he was cancer free in June 2017 and less than a year later scored the goal that kept Rochdale in League One, beating Charlton on the final day of the season.
However, he announced his retirement two years later, saying at the time his body had been pushed 'to the limit' by his two fights against Hodgkin lymphoma.
He started his career in the Manchester United academy as a forward, and later returned to the club as an Ambassador.
After he'd called time on his playing career, Joe took to fundraising and raising awareness of blood cancers, most recently completing a 21-mile walk from Old Trafford to Rochdale's Crown Oil Arena.
Simon's challenge will raise money so that Joe's wife Chantelle can take their daughters Lula and Athena Rae on a dream holiday to New York, something that Joe had promised 12 year-old Lula.
He said: "The donations are coming in left, right and centre from all over the country. It's been a crazy few hours with no sleep and we will be training through the night, but its all for an amazing cause."
"Joe was an amazing man and a great friend to me - we want to be able to give something back to his kids. Every penny will go to them."

Kieran Tierney roars the Celtic band is back together as Hoops tell cheeky transfer bidder it's double or nothing
Tierney is back in green and white and had a straightforward message after his first meeting with one familiar face 'The band is back together.' Those were Kieran Tierney's first words to one Celtic teammate after meeting him for the first time since returning to Parkhead. Tierney is officially checked back in after six years at Arsenal and it's almost as if he's never been away. He came through the academy with the likes of Callum McGregor, Anthony Ralston and Ross Doohan and those who have played with him before are grinning at the sight of him back in green and white. Keeper Doohan also returns to the club this summer after a spell away and he met Tierney for the first time since they both re-signed when he joined the Scotland camp for the trip to Liechtenstein last month. And he made a point to seek out his old pal – who had a simple message for him. 'KT was a year older than me growing up in the youth teams, but we obviously played together a lot," the returning keeper said. 'You obviously know the type of player KT is, what he's like and the type of person he's like, so it's another great addition to the squad. 'I spoke to him when I went away on Scotland duty, so we were both there together when I got the late call. He was there chatting, but I've known KT for years now, so I was just looking forward to getting back to it. I think he said to me when I saw him it was about getting the band back together. 'He said that to me when I saw him so it's obviously great coming back and then me and him in the same situation, leaving a few years then later both coming back. 'We've always had a good relationship. We spoke a lot, although, in the last few years, maybe not as much. But every time we see each other, we chat away and always had the conversation. 'I've got the relationship with Tony Ralston because he was in the same youth squad as me from 13, so we went right through it together. We're pretty close. 'One of my loan spells was at Ayr, so me and Luke McCowan played together for quite a bit. We played together for two seasons, so I still keep in contact with him, so it's good to come back to a good few familiar faces.' Elsewhere it's reported that the Hoops have told Bolton to double their money for Johnny Kenny – or risk missing out on the striker. Kenny is a target for the EFL League One side but their opening offer, believed to be in the region of £500,000, has been turfed out. Celtic found that bid to be a touch cheeky and, according to the Scottish Sun, have told them to double it and cough up £1m. The Irishman spent the first half of last season on loan at Shamrock Rovers and racked up the goals in Ireland, including five in six Conference League appearances, before returning to Parkhead in February. He scored his first goal for the club against Aberdeen, serving largely as the third-choice No.9 behind Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda. But with Callum Osmand set to come in from Fulham and another striker being chased beyond that, it's believed Kenny is surplus to requirements. Celtic however won't be selling him on the cheap even as Kenny enters the final year on his contract.

The transfer fee Celtic want for Johnny Kenny 'revealed'
The striker will be allowed to leave the Parkhead club for the right price. English League One side Bolton Wanderers recently had a £500,000 bid for Kenny rejected, although The Scottish Sun claims Celtic want £1m to part ways with the 22-year-old. Kenny joined the Scottish Premiership champions in 2022. He has since enjoyed loan spells at Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers, with him particularly succeeding at the latter. Read more: He played 10 times for Brendan Rodgers' first team in the second half of last season, scoring away to Aberdeen in the penultimate game of the league campaign. It appears Celtic could part ways with the attacker this summer, however, with a deal for Fulham's Callum Osmand said to be in the works. The club also secured the services of versatile Swedish attacker Benjamin Nygren on Friday. He joins on a five-year deal from Danish top-flight side Nordsjaelland. The 23-year-old was Celtic's third summer signing, following on from Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan. There have been no confirmed departures from Glasgow's east end yet, although Kenny could be on the chopping block, per reports.

Celtic's Johnny Kenny asking price revealed as English club told to increase bid to land for-sale star

Kenny will be allowed to go at the right price and if Brendan Rodgers finds a replacement. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 1 Johnny Kenny celebrates scoring against Aberdeen this season Credit: Kenny Ramsay League One outfit Wanderers are in at around £500,000 but Celts want them to double their offer before they consider letting the Irishman leave Parkhead. Kenny shone during a loan spell with Shamrock Rovers in the first half of last season and bagged 20 goals. He enjoyed a rich vein of form in the Conference League, which persuaded Rodgers to bring him back after January. The 22-year-old broke into the first-team squad towards the end of the season and scored his first Hoops goal in a 5-1 win at Aberdeen. But he is still behind Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah in the pecking order, with Celts also keen on a move for Kawasaki Frontale attacker Shin Yamada. New Swedish signing Benjamin Nygren, who arrived last week in a £2million deal from Nordsjaelland, can also play up top. Meanwhile, Liverpool are ready to throw former Celtic winger Ben Doak into a swap deal for England star Marc Guehi. The Anfield club's transfer team are focusing on centre-half Guehi as their next target, but Palace want in the region of £50m. Scotland star Doak is fancied by Palace and rated in the £25m bracket, despite his limited appearances outside a loan spell at Middlesbrough. Liverpool would send Doak and cash to Selhurst Park to get Guehi, but that will still take a great deal of negotiating. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Palace supremo Steve Parish is renowned for standing firm on his valuations, so the Kop would have to offer a significant amount of cash as an adjustment. Everton are also keen on Doak but not at the £25m mark, with the player waiting on word about his future. Meanwhile, Guehi is letting his deal run down but has been relatively lowly paid at Palace for some time — with money not his driving force.
