Pirates poke fun at Chiefs over MTN8 failure
Orlando Pirates have started the banter ahead of the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League season, releasing a video taking aim at Kaizer Chiefs for not qualifying for the MTN8.

In the video, an Amakhosi player arrives at the airport brandishing a Nedbank Cup winners, and strides confidently past a queue of MTN8 qualifiers. However, he is stopped by a customs official, who points out that there is priority boarding for the sides playing in the MTN8.
Chiefs' embarrassment
Chiefs finished 9th in the Betway Premiership last season, meaning they failed to qualify for the MTN8 for the second season in a row. The PSL season will kick off this weekend with the MTN8 quarterfinals.
Amakhosi did beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final to win their first trophy in a decade, and it remains to be seen if Kaizer Chiefs' own media team hits back in the coming days.
A mixed pre-season
Chiefs have had a mixed pre-season, and lost the Toyota Cup for the second season in a row on Saturday, going down 3-2 on penalties to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has confirmed that new signing Abdoulaye Mariko made a strong first impression, but insists the young forward must quickly learn English to fully settle into life in South Africa. Mariko, 22, came off the bench during Pirates' 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 opener, producing a lively second-half cameo that thrilled the crowd and sparked growing excitement around his potential impact in the upcoming season. The former Djoliba forward arrived at Mayfair with high expectations after a stunning campaign in the Malian Ligue 1, where he claimed both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season awards. His namesake, also Abdoulaye Mariko, joined Pirates from Djoliba as well but will spend the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Chippa United. Ouaddou recognised the potential in his new recruit but stressed the importance of adapting both on and off the pitch. 'Mariko is a very interesting young player, he was the top scorer in Mali, he took the award as the best player in the league and top scorer, he's come in a new environment in a big club,' Ouaddou said. While praising Mariko's talent and debut display, the coach underlined the challenges of adapting to a new culture, environment and team dynamic. 'He has lots of quality, as you may have seen today, but we still need to improve him and bring him to the high level. 'Losing Appollis is like losing a family member' — Mohafe
Image: ANTONIO MUCHAVE Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has likened losing talismanic winger Oswin Appollis to Orlando Pirates to the passing of a family member, suggesting it'll be very hard for Rise and Shine to replace him. In his Pirates debut, Appollis haunted his former team in the MTN8 quarterfinals at Orlando Stadium on Saturday by winning a penalty that was converted by Patrick Maswanganyi, to give Bucs a 2-0 win. Polokwane sold Appollis to Pirates last month. 'It's always difficult to lose a family member. I lost a family member [in Appollis], so I am grieving,' Mohafe joked. 'He left for a bigger team, and all I can do is wish him well. I am feeling the pinch ... he left a big hole in my team and for me, and for us to replace him, it's going to take some time.' The 23-year-old Bafana Bafana ace's cool, first-time finish in the 13th minute left Mohafe proud. 'No man, that [Appollis's move] shows that I taught him well,' Mohafe said.
