GE Vernova's H-Class gas turbines to expand Qurayyah power plant
The two companies have signed, under a 50-50 joint venture, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project in the Eastern Province in Saudi Arabia.
This expansion project, a 3 gigawatt (GW) combined cycle gas-fired power plant with readiness to build a carbon capture unit, aims to bolster electricity production capacity and enhance operational efficiency in Saudi Arabia. Expanding Saudi Arabia's fleet of combined cycle power plants plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia's plan to generate half of its electricity from gas by 2030 and half from renewables, paving the way to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2060, a statement said.
Hajr Two Electricity Co, a company owned by ACWA Power, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the Qurayyah Independent Power Plant (IPP) Expansion Project with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC – Principal Buyer) in February 2025.
Hajr Two Electricity Co commented: 'The QIPP Expansion Project is a very ambitious project and we are proud to support its development. We look forward to working with TR & Orascom Construction and GE Vernova to contribute to Saudi Arabia's enhancement of its electricity supply as the Kingdom transitions its power generation mix to incorporate more renewable energy in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 and its ambitious sustainability targets.'
'QIPP project is evidence of Saudi Arabia's strong belief in the future of gas as it emits less CO2 and other pollutants than oil-fueled power plants,' said Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East & Africa. 'We have developed a productive and successful relationship with TR & Orascom Construction building on our proven expertise in natural gas combined cycle plant engineering, operability, and plant integration, and we are delighted to deploy some of our most advanced power generation technologies, with the potential to integrate carbon capture solutions to help significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in QIPP's and other gas power plants in Saudi Arabia.'
GE Vernova has been playing a pivotal role in fostering the evolution of the Kingdom's energy infrastructure for almost 90 years, supporting economic diversification, localization, high value exports, and talent development efforts and still does so today in support of Saudi Vision 2030.
The company currently employs approximately 850 people in Saudi Arabia. GE Vernova's investments in the Kingdom include the Khobar Integration Facility (KIF) for grid solutions, as well as the GE Manufacturing and Technology Center (GEMTEC) campus in Dammam, which encompasses a Services and Repairs Center for gas turbines, the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (GESAT) facility for the manufacturing of gas turbines, components and accessory modules, the GE MENA Decarbonization Center of Excellence, and a Monitoring & Diagnostics Center for the remote monitoring of power generation assets.

Egypt: Orascom- ENGIE-TTC-Eurus consortium begins full commercial operation of 650-MW Ras Ghareb wind farm
Arab Finance: The Red Sea Wind Energy consortium, comprising ENGIE, Orascom Construction, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Eurus Energy, has announced the full commercial operation of its 650-megawatt wind farm near Ras Ghareb, Egypt, four months ahead of schedule, as per an emailed press release. The final 150 MW phase was completed and commissioned in June 2025, following the early delivery of 306 MW in December 2024 and 194 MW in April 2025. The entire capacity is now connected to the national grid, making the Ras Ghareb project the largest operational wind farm in the Middle East and Africa. It is expected to power more than one million homes and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons annually. The project was developed on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis over a 25-year period by the Red Sea Wind Energy S.A.E. consortium. ENGIE holds a 35% stake, Orascom Construction 25%, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation 20% each. Beyond its investment role, Orascom Construction executed all civil, electrical, and EPC works for the plant without any loss of life during construction. The new facility adds to the consortium's earlier 262.5 MW wind project completed in 2019, bringing its total operational wind capacity in Egypt to 912.5 MW. The group has also begun evaluating a new 900 MW wind farm on adjacent land. © 2020-2023 Arab Finance For Information Technology. All Rights Reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Saudi Arabia's non-oil sector growth quickens in June on strong demand, PMI shows
ABU DHABI - The expansion in Saudi Arabia's non-oil private sector activity accelerated in May, driven by robust client demand and a surge in hiring, a survey showed on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted Riyad Bank Saudi Arabia Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to a three-month high of 57.2 from May's 55.8, putting it further above the 50-point line denoting growth. New order growth quickened to a four-month high, with the subindex rising to 64.3 in June from 62.5 in May. Domestic sales were the primary driver of this upturn, supported by successful client acquisitions and enhanced marketing strategies. However, export sales growth remained marginal. "Firms largely linked the pickup in activity to improving sales, new project starts, and better demand conditions, although the pace of output growth was softer compared to previous highs," said Naif Al-Ghaith, chief economist at Riyad Bank. Non-oil private companies hired staff at the fastest rate since May 2011, as firms expanded teams to manage increased workloads. Input prices also rose sharply, aligning with the second-quarter trend, leading firms to pass on higher costs to customers. Output prices increased solidly, the strongest rise in a year-and-a-half, following reductions in previous months. Despite cost pressures, Saudi non-oil firms remained optimistic about future activity, the survey showed, with the Future Output Index reaching a two-year high. Confidence was buoyed by resilient domestic economic conditions and robust demand. Last month, the International Monetary Fund raised its 2025 GDP growth forecast for Saudi Arabia to 3.5% from 3%, partly on the back of demand for government-led projects, and supported by the OPEC+ group's plan to phase out oil production cuts.

Lower consumption, fewer emissions, quieter ride: New e-POWER is a game-changing technology
Nearly a decade after its global debut, Nissan is launching the most advanced form of its unique e-POWER technology. First launched in Europe four years ago, e-POWER was developed to deliver an electric- drive experience without the need to plug in – combining the smooth, effortless acceleration and refinement of an EV with the everyday convenience of traditional combustion power. This next-generation system has been comprehensively re-engineered for even better fuel efficiency, lower emissions and elevated refinement. New e-POWER will further smoothen the transition from fuel towards zero emissions. The refinement and responsiveness of an EV At the heart of the e-POWER is a unique principle which delivers real customer benefits: the petrol engine is used only to generate electricity which is distributed directly to the electric motor to drive the wheels, as well as to charge the battery if needed. Unlike traditional hybrids, there is no complicated gearbox and coupling to combine petrol power and electric energy to drive the wheels, meaning response is instant and the drive is always smooth, just like an EV. And like an EV, the regenerative braking system on e- POWER converts kinetic energy into electrical energy, fed back into the battery. New e-POWER takes this concept and elevates it further to deliver a best-in-class balance of performance, EV-like refinement and real-world fuel efficiency – but with the range and flexibility of a traditional combustion engine vehicle. At the core of New e-POWER is a newly-developed 5-in-1 modular powertrain unit, which integrates the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser into a compact and lighter package. David Moss, Senior Vice President, Region Research & Development, Nissan AMIEO, said 'This new version of e-POWER reflects everything we've learned from developing electric motor drive systems for Europe. We've analysed what worked in our previous generations, what appealed most to customers, and re-engineered the system to deliver maximum efficiency, lower emissions and a quieter, more refined drive. We are proud that New e-POWER now offers best-in- class fuel efficiency and emissions.' A smarter step towards electric For many drivers, moving to a fully electric vehicle still comes with questions – about charging, range, infrastructure, and habit change. That's where e-POWER comes in. With its fully electric motor drive and no plug-in requirement, new e-POWER offers a clear, confident step into electrified driving – combining the smoothness and instant response of an EV, with the familiar range and convenience of an ICE. It delivers the experience of electric, without the perceived challenges and common misconceptions that can still hold some drivers back from switching to fully electric. And because the engine never powers the wheels, the driving feel is entirely electric, with no gear shifts, no power lag, and minimal engine noise at low speeds. Yet, unlike a battery electric vehicle, refuelling takes place at any petrol station. By removing the complexity of change, e-POWER acts as a true transition technology – giving customers the benefits of electric mobility with none of the friction. It's built for drivers who want something better, but not something unfamiliar. Clíodhna Lyons, Region Vice President, Product & Services Planning, Nissan AMIEO, added 'This generation of e-POWER is the result of combining our customer insights with Nissan's vision for electrified powertrains. It takes further the promise of e- POWER by delivering much better efficiency without any compromise on performance. Best fuel efficiency and range – even on the highway – with a pleasant, refined, everyday EV driving. And all that, without changing the way we are used to live with a traditional vehicle. More than ever, it represents a seamless transition for our customers towards full EV and a key pillar of our electrification strategy.' New e-POWER comes to Qashqai from September 2025 Technology improvements include increased driving intelligence with enhanced ProPILOT driver assistance features such as improved multi-lane autonomous drive interfaces for better traffic monitoring and awareness of surrounding environment. Meanwhile, new e-POWER customers can expect lower total cost of ownership (TCO) thanks to service intervals which have been extended from 15,000km to 20,000km. The latest Qashqai equipped with new e-POWER, which is built at Nissan's state-of-the-art factory in Sunderland, UK will be available in European markets from September 2025.
