I have been a fan of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's writing since the days of Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, so a new novel after a 10-year gap from this Nigerian/American author is something to celebrate. Here she focuses on four women: three living in America and one in Nigeria.
The novel opens with Chiamaka, a travel writer who lives in America, contemplating her life at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown. We learn about her background — she is the Nigerian equivalent of a trust-fund kid, the child of very wealthy parents, who likes her travelling to be luxurious and glamorous — and her past romantic entanglements. She is kind, funny and always seems to be searching for something that is just out of reach.
Next we meet Zikora, Chiamaka's best friend, who also lives in America and is a lawyer, searching for love, only to be disappointed. She is also wealthy and successful, as is Omelogor, Chiamaka's cousin, who is still based in Nigeria and has risen up the ranks of Nigerian finance — a not-always-honest sector. But having got to the top through fair means and foul, she decides to attend an American university to study, of all things, pornography, and to set up a website to 'educate' men on the subject.
The fourth woman, Kadiatou, is somewhat different. She is also based in America, but grew up in rural Guinea, poor and less educated than the three Nigerians. She works as a domestic and as a hotel chambermaid to earn money to give her young daughter a better chance in life than she has had. And here Adichie shifts away from exploring the lives and choices of wealthy, successful women on the cusp of middle age and still uncertain of what they really want, to something rather different.
Drawing on the real-life case that concerned the chief of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who was accused of rape by an immigrant hotel worker, Adichie, having given Kadiatou a backstory, has her at the mercy of the American judicial system, having been raped by an influential man, a guest in the hotel where she is working. And, while the telling of Kadiatou's story is powerful and poignant, to some extent it throws the rest of the book out of balance.
There are times when Dream Count feels like two different novels that have been strung together. The one deals with women who on the surface are successfully competing in a world where they could have been seen as alien, but who are still searching for more than they seem able to reach — a search for the kind of success in their private lives that they have managed in their public ones. And on the other hand, we see a woman who has all the odds stacked against her and while — without wanting to give spoilers — she can be counted as having been treated horribly in her public life, she will ultimately achieve a personal catharsis.
Adichie's writing is compelling, and Dream Count always holds one's attention. There is humour, outrage and wit, but Kadiatou's life experience is so removed from that of the other characters, however much they interact with her, that it makes for a slightly uneasy blend.

DA NCOP member welcomes reports NPA to charge Nigerian rapper for crashing luxury car in CT

CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Security and Justice, Nicholas Gotsell, has welcomed reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to charge a Nigerian rapper for crashing his McLaren in Sea Point in March. The musician, known as 3GAR Baby, is expected to appear in a Cape Town court soon for crashing his luxury supercar at high speed. ALSO READ: NPA confirms Nigerian rapper 3GAR Baby will face charges of reckless driving The NPA said the musician would be summoned to appear in court soon to face charges of reckless or negligent driving. It's believed that the Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, was driving at over 200km/h when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pavement on High Level Road on 1 March. Photos of him with blood gushing down his face circulated on social media shortly after the crash. Gotsell said the wheels of justice were finally turning after months of pressure on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter. "Over the past months, Cape Town and surrounds have been plagued by serious incidents involving luxury vehicles. Nobody, not even a so-called celebrity, is above the law." It's understood that a passenger was also injured in the accident.

US star Donell Jones to headline Ndlala Mall opening in Pretoria

After a brief postponement, the highly anticipated grand opening of Ndlala Mall is set to dazzle Pretoria on August 23 — and it's bringing international star power with it. American R&B star Donell Jones will headline the launch event at the state of the art Ndlala Arena, a 550-seat venue in the new retail and lifestyle development in Arcadia. The multi-platinum artist is best known for his 1999 classic album Where I Wanna Be and hit single U Know What's Up, which topped charts and still pulls in more than 1.2-million monthly Spotify listeners. Ndlala Mall CEO Thami Ndlala said securing Donell Jones is a major coup: 'It is an honour to have an artist of such a great calibre in the music industry to be the main performer at the opening.' Jones won't be alone on stage. He'll be joined by South African music heavyweights Zonke Dikana and Vusi Nova, renowned for their chart-topping ballads and contributions to the R&B and soul scenes. Thami Ndlala — the billionaire and visionary behind Ndlala Mall and the Ndlalayesizwe Real Estate empire — has transformed Arcadia's retail landscape with this project. The mall, adjacent to the Ndlala Oligarch Hotel & Apartments, merges shopping, lifestyle and entertainment into one luxury precinct. With a star-studded line-up and a sleek new venue, August 23 is set to mark a new chapter in Pretoria's entertainment and retail scene.

Tyla's chart-topping hits 'Jump' and 'Push 2 Start' earn Gold certification in the US

Tyla has achieved Gold certification in the US for her hit singles 'Jump' and 'Push 2 Start.' Image: X Tyla's international success continues to soar! The South African songstress has once again made waves in the American music scene. Her chart-topping hits 'Jump' (with Gunna and Skillibeng) and 'Push 2 Start' have officially achieved the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Gold certification in the US. According to RIAA, the two singles from Tyla's self-titled debut album were certified gold on July 29, 2025, after surpassing 500 000 units in sales and streaming equivalents in the US. The new certifications mark the 23-year-old singer's third song to reach Gold status in the US. Her breakout hit 'Water' is currently 3x Platinum in the country, while 'Truth or Dare' is gold. It also became the very first Gold certification for Jamaican DJ and rapper Skillibeng. He was featured on the song and added his dancehall flair to the hit. 'Push 2 Start' first appeared as an additional song on the deluxe version of Tyla's self-titled album 'Tyla +'. It has been a standout hit, soaring up the charts and becoming a fan favourite. The song's popularity also skyrocketed after the release of its music video, which currently has 102 million views, and with the release of a remix featuring dancehall legend Sean Paul. It achieved platinum status in Brazil and New Zealand. It was also certified gold in Canada and Greece then silver in the United Kingdom. The collaboration brought together Tyla's signature sound with Sean Paul's nostalgic vibe, which is perfectly in line with Tyla's aesthetic. It further cemented 'Push 2 Start' as a chart-topper. 'Jump', another significant success for Tyla, reached No 3 on the Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart and No 42 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Furthermore, it spent several weeks in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, peaking at No. 38. Earlier this year, both songs were featured on Spotify's Global Impact List, where Tyla was leading the pack with 12 songs on the South African edition. The list showcased the top artists making waves outside of Mzansi, solidifying the global reach of local artists and their music. The talented singer-songwriter dominated the list with an impressive 12 songs in the top 25. From collaborations to solo work, her unique 'popiano' sound struck a chord with listeners around the world. Most of her songs from her debut self-titled album made it to the list, and 'Jump', along with 'Push 2 Start', were among the songs mentioned. The RIAA awards a Gold record for sales of 500 000 units (records, tapes, and compact discs). Platinum status is granted for sales exceeding one million units, while Diamond status is reserved for 10 million or more albums or singles sold.
