Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has expressed strong disappointment over the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) decision to rename the India-England Test series trophy from the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Engineer, a close friend of the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, called the move "disrespectful" and described the newly introduced Pataudi Medal for the winning captain as a mere afterthought to appease supporters like him.
The ECB had introduced the Pataudi Trophy in 2007 for the Test series played in England between India and England. However, ahead of the ongoing five-match series, the name was changed to honour two modern-day greats-Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. The decision has been met with criticism from several quarters, including legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Speaking to PTI, Engineer said, "Well, Tiger Pataudi was a great friend of mine. Great colleague of mine. We played a lot of Test cricket. Great heritage, great family. I was most happy when the trophy was named after him back in 2007."
"On one hand I was very disappointed that the Pataudi name was removed. I would love Tiger's name to go on but instead powers that be decided with Anderson and Sachin who are legends of the game."
While acknowledging the stature of both Tendulkar-the highest run-getter in Test cricket-and Anderson-the most successful fast bowler in terms of wickets-Engineer stressed that Pataudi's legacy deserved to be preserved.
"It (introducing the Pataudi medal) was obviously an afterthought, they should have announced it in the beginning. That would have more credibility, but at least they have done something. Common sense has prevailed and I hope the Pataudi name always remains."
Engineer also revealed that the Pataudi Medal was introduced after Tendulkar requested the ECB to do so. The medal, now named the Pataudi Medal, will be awarded to the winning captain of the Test series.
"That must be a second choice to appease a lot of Pataudi supporters of which I am one, but you can't blame them for naming the trophy after Sachin and Anderson."
The former wicketkeeper-batter also underlined the Pataudi family's deep-rooted ties with both English and Indian cricket. He said that while the situation remains debatable, a degree of balance has been restored with the introduction of the medal. He further urged the ECB to include Pataudi's family in the ceremonial aspects.
"I hope they call Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan to present the medal, which they have not done before. That would give them the due credit they deserve."
England currently leads the series 1-0. The second Test will begin on July 2.

Former England batter Mark Butcher could not wrap his around the probablity of India's seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah missing the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston, starting Wednesday. Butcher felt that Bumrah has had an adequate break since India's series-opening five-wicket defeat to England in Headingley last week and said the team's requirement was more important than the pacer's wish to return to play at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in the third Test, scheduled to begin next week on June 10. 'Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches. I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays. I know he wants to play at Lord's but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord's,' Butcher said on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast. 'And who knows, he might get through this one okay and be fine for Lord's, and then you take your chances at the back-end,' Butcher added. Bumrah was head and shoulders above his bowling peers at Leeds when he claimed a superb first-innings five-wicket haul while the rest of the pacers were slammed left and right by England batters. While he went wicketless in the last innings, Bumrah's pace partner Prasidh Krishna ended the match with woeful figures of 5/224, his 6.40 economy the worst of all pacers in history to have conceded as many runs in a match. Butcher said that it was imperative that India consider bringing in a left-arm pace or spin option in Arshdeep Singh or Kuldeep Yadav to replace Prasidh. 'First and foremost, depending on what you've got in you squad, you try and pick bowlers that the opposition – England, with their shot-making preference – would like the least. What they would very much enjoy are mid to low eighties seam bowlers. What they would enjoy much less than that is left-arm leg spin, if you have one – and India do have one. That would be the starting point,' said Butcher. 'A left-arm swing bowler is also perhaps an option. If Arshdeep [Singh] comes in, I think Prasidh Krishna was found wanting…. If you can manage it, you go Siraj, Bumrah, Arshdeep, Kuldeep, Jadeja, and you take the cards where they fall with your batting. Simply because – I said it at the time during the first Test match – I couldn't see how Shardul was going to make enough runs to make up for his lack of potency with the ball,' he added.

Gill turned up, addressed an intriguing press conference, went back to the field to go through an intense batting session before breaking away from the pack and getting busy with sprints and other fitness drills. The batting ability of the second spinner could be a big factor in selection. Washington, having batted long in the nets on Monday, didn't turn up for the optional training session. Kuldeep focused on his batting in the nets on Tuesday. Interestingly, this bunch of boys have played decisive parts in India's finest overseas Test victories in the last seven-eight years. Playing bold and fearless cricket was at the core of those victories. Leading into this Test, one gets the feeling that they are getting into a safety-first approach against an England team which thrives on no-holds-barred cricket. With Bumrah almost certain to take a break in this match and the lower middle-order batters the soft underbelly of the lineup, decision making has been difficult. Gill spelled out his preferred combination, which will give him steady batting options till No. 8 with three frontline pacers, two spinners and one bowler who can chip in. That the team management under Gambhir is fond of utility players is no secret now. The sudden ascension of Nitish Kumar Reddy in the last Test series in Australia is a reference point.
