Pataudi Trophy row: Engineer criticises ECB, calls medal a mere afterthought

Calls Pataudi Medal an 'afterthought' to appease critics of the trophy change
The ECB had introduced the Pataudi Trophy in 2007
Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has expressed strong disappointment over the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) decision to rename the India-England Test series trophy from the Pataudi Trophy to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Engineer, a close friend of the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, called the move "disrespectful" and described the newly introduced Pataudi Medal for the winning captain as a mere afterthought to appease supporters like him.
The ECB had introduced the Pataudi Trophy in 2007 for the Test series played in England between India and England. However, ahead of the ongoing five-match series, the name was changed to honour two modern-day greats-Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. The decision has been met with criticism from several quarters, including legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Speaking to PTI, Engineer said, "Well, Tiger Pataudi was a great friend of mine. Great colleague of mine. We played a lot of Test cricket. Great heritage, great family. I was most happy when the trophy was named after him back in 2007."
"On one hand I was very disappointed that the Pataudi name was removed. I would love Tiger's name to go on but instead powers that be decided with Anderson and Sachin who are legends of the game."
While acknowledging the stature of both Tendulkar-the highest run-getter in Test cricket-and Anderson-the most successful fast bowler in terms of wickets-Engineer stressed that Pataudi's legacy deserved to be preserved.
"It (introducing the Pataudi medal) was obviously an afterthought, they should have announced it in the beginning. That would have more credibility, but at least they have done something. Common sense has prevailed and I hope the Pataudi name always remains."
Engineer also revealed that the Pataudi Medal was introduced after Tendulkar requested the ECB to do so. The medal, now named the Pataudi Medal, will be awarded to the winning captain of the Test series.
"That must be a second choice to appease a lot of Pataudi supporters of which I am one, but you can't blame them for naming the trophy after Sachin and Anderson."
The former wicketkeeper-batter also underlined the Pataudi family's deep-rooted ties with both English and Indian cricket. He said that while the situation remains debatable, a degree of balance has been restored with the introduction of the medal. He further urged the ECB to include Pataudi's family in the ceremonial aspects.
"I hope they call Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan to present the medal, which they have not done before. That would give them the due credit they deserve."
England currently leads the series 1-0. The second Test will begin on July 2.

‘India's need more important than Jasprit Bumrah's wish to play at Lord's': Former ENG batter says star pacer must play Edgbaston Test

Former England batter Mark Butcher could not wrap his around the probablity of India's seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah missing the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston, starting Wednesday. Butcher felt that Bumrah has had an adequate break since India's series-opening five-wicket defeat to England in Headingley last week and said the team's requirement was more important than the pacer's wish to return to play at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in the third Test, scheduled to begin next week on June 10. 'Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches. I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays. I know he wants to play at Lord's but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord's,' Butcher said on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast. 'And who knows, he might get through this one okay and be fine for Lord's, and then you take your chances at the back-end,' Butcher added. Bumrah was head and shoulders above his bowling peers at Leeds when he claimed a superb first-innings five-wicket haul while the rest of the pacers were slammed left and right by England batters. While he went wicketless in the last innings, Bumrah's pace partner Prasidh Krishna ended the match with woeful figures of 5/224, his 6.40 economy the worst of all pacers in history to have conceded as many runs in a match. Butcher said that it was imperative that India consider bringing in a left-arm pace or spin option in Arshdeep Singh or Kuldeep Yadav to replace Prasidh. 'First and foremost, depending on what you've got in you squad, you try and pick bowlers that the opposition – England, with their shot-making preference – would like the least. What they would very much enjoy are mid to low eighties seam bowlers. What they would enjoy much less than that is left-arm leg spin, if you have one – and India do have one. That would be the starting point,' said Butcher. 'A left-arm swing bowler is also perhaps an option. If Arshdeep [Singh] comes in, I think Prasidh Krishna was found wanting…. If you can manage it, you go Siraj, Bumrah, Arshdeep, Kuldeep, Jadeja, and you take the cards where they fall with your batting. Simply because – I said it at the time during the first Test match – I couldn't see how Shardul was going to make enough runs to make up for his lack of potency with the ball,' he added.

India vs England: Cagey India may adopt safety-first approach against rampaging England as second Test begins

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. (Pic credit: BCCI) The Times of India in England: A day before the second Test begins against England, the skies were grey and overcast above Edgbaston, mirroring the dark clouds of uncertainty hovering over the Indian dressing room. Upon reaching the stadium, head coach Gautam Gambhir , chief selector Ajit Agarkar, selectorial colleague Shiv Sundar Das, bowling coach Morne Morkel and captain Shubman Gill were seen assembling at the pitch and indulging in an animated discussion for a good 45 minutes. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! It was an optional practice day. Gill turned up, addressed an intriguing press conference, went back to the field to go through an intense batting session before breaking away from the pack and getting busy with sprints and other fitness drills. Amid all this, Gambhir was seen walking up and speaking to him even as Gill was doing his fitness drills. Poll Should India play two spinners in the second Test against England? Yes, to strengthen the bowling attack No, stick to pace bowlers Depends on pitch conditions Only if one of them can bat well India are going into this Test a game down in the series after the loss at Headingley. These are not exactly desperate times yet but somehow the anxiety in the camp is palpable. The playing combination has taken centre stage. It's not just about star bowler Jasprit Bumrah's likely unavailability for this match. It's about how India want to approach the Test. When Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir looked at the pitch to decide India Playing XI Playing two spinners on this relatively dry surface is the only thing that they have been clear about. Going by Gill's statements on the eve of the match, India are still unsure about the role they would want the second spinner to play. It has come down to choosing between Washington Sundar's off-spin and Kuldeep Yadav 's left-arm spin. It's obvious that India are rattled by the high rate of scoring of the English batting lineup. 'Containment' was the operative word used by Gill on Tuesday. 'In the last Test our bad phases were so bad that the game got away from us. We expect a similar pitch here. We feel the second spinner can offer more control than the pacer. We should have bowled tighter lines in Leeds,' Gill said. 'Jaddu bhai (Ravindra Jadeja) was making things happen on the last day in the last Test. A second spinner could have given us a better opportunity.' And then he delivered a somewhat contradictory line. 'We want to have an attack that can pick 20 wickets. The only thing you have to see is how you manage the extra spinner on Day One. If at all there is anything on this kind of pitch, it is in the first session or first couple of sessions on Day One. So, that is the main call that you have to take on this kind of pitch.' Late selection meeting between Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill and Ajit Agarkar near pitch? The problem here is the team management's obsession with beefing up the batting order. The batting ability of the second spinner could be a big factor in selection. Washington, having batted long in the nets on Monday, didn't turn up for the optional training session. Kuldeep focused on his batting in the nets on Tuesday. Interestingly, this bunch of boys have played decisive parts in India's finest overseas Test victories in the last seven-eight years. Playing bold and fearless cricket was at the core of those victories. Leading into this Test, one gets the feeling that they are getting into a safety-first approach against an England team which thrives on no-holds-barred cricket. With Bumrah almost certain to take a break in this match and the lower middle-order batters the soft underbelly of the lineup, decision making has been difficult. Gill spelled out his preferred combination, which will give him steady batting options till No. 8 with three frontline pacers, two spinners and one bowler who can chip in. That the team management under Gambhir is fond of utility players is no secret now. The sudden ascension of Nitish Kumar Reddy in the last Test series in Australia is a reference point. Shubman Gill press conference: Playing XI almost final, time of Jasprit Bumrah call and more Reddy's century on a similar pitch at the MCG might tempt Gill to give him a go. Reddy was seen going through extensive fielding drill in the slip cordon and a thorough batting nets session on Monday. He too took the day off. Right through the press conference, Gill was insistent that he has a very productive pool of players to choose from. Now, it's just about clarity, about whether India want to be on the offensive against an ultra-aggressive England team or play percentage cricket in their bid to level the series. England vs India Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES, 2nd Test: Sundar in for Shardul, Reddy in place of Bumrah?

IND vs ENG Playing 11: England have announced the unchanged playing 11 for the second Test. India is likely to make two changes in their Playing 11 As Shubman Gill's Team India prepare to take on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, the spotlight is firmly on selection decisions, workload management, and potential history-makers. Trailing 0-1 in the five-match series after failing to defend 371 in Leeds—despite five centuries, including two by Rishabh Pant—India must now make bold, tactical choices to stay alive in the series. Bumrah available, but workload under scrutiny India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah bowled nearly 44 overs in Leeds, raising questions about his inclusion in the second Test. However, captain Shubman Gill confirmed in the pre-match press conference that Bumrah is available for selection. 'We are trying to manage his workload. We'll take a final call after assessing the conditions. We want a combination that can take 20 wickets and score enough runs,' Gill said. He also revealed that the team had anticipated Bumrah playing only three of the five Tests and had pre-planned multiple combinations accordingly. Two spinners in England? Not ruled out India are seriously considering a two-spinner strategy, with either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar partnering Ravindra Jadeja. Edgbaston's unpredictable weather and the presence of wear patches in the pitch have prompted the rethink. 'It's not common to play two spinners in England, but the surface might demand it. In Leeds, we felt we were creating chances when Jadeja bowled. If the pitch behaves similarly, a second spinner could help contain runs until the second new ball,' Gill noted. Kuldeep, who has never bowled to England's aggressive Bazball approach, could be India's wildcard. Despite going wicketless in his only Test in England (2018), he has a strong recent record—21 wickets in six Tests at home against England in 2024 at an average of 22.28. 9:38 AM 2nd Test | ENG vs IND Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES: Here's what Gill said on Bumrah's availability Speaking ahead of the match in the pre-match presser, Gill said about the team's 'Jassi Bhai', "Bumrah is definitely available to play. We are trying to find a way to manage his workload. And yes, we are trying to find the right combination where we can take 20 wickets and score runs as well on these kinds of wickets. We just thought we are going to have a final look today (on the wicket) once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow." Gill also said that the team was aware of the fact that Bumrah would be playing only three games and had decided on several combinations. "So, you definitely do miss your best bowler if he is not playing. But I think we had that sorted before the series, who would be playing if he were not playing," he added.
