Fathiya El-Assal's play Women's Prison to premiere during Eid El-Fitr in Cairo - Stage & Street - Arts & Culture

Al-Ahram Weekly24-03-2025
Women's Prison (Segn El-Nesa) — a play by prominent playwright and activist Fathiya El-Assal (1933-2014) that inspired a highly successful 2014 TV series with the same name — will premiere at Cairo's Al-Salam Theatre during Eid El-Fitr.
One of Fathiya El-Assal's most famous works, Women's Prison, explores imprisoned women's struggles and emotional experiences, delving into their struggles, relationships, and the harsh realities they face in a patriarchal society.
"The play comprises a plethora of women prisoners who advocate political protests and the restructuring of state institutions being part of the overall power structure under which they exist. The playwright integrates polyphonic voices from different social categories to give her fragmented characters an opportunity for articulation and self-representation," analyzes Mahmoud El Bagoury.
El-Assal's play inspired the 2014 Egyptian TV series Segn El-Nesa, adapted by Mariam Naoum and directed by Kamla Abouzekri, which aired during Ramadan that year.
Naoum expanded El-Assal's original play by adding additional events, diversifying the characters, and increasing the net of the relationships.
Known for being a staunch advocate of women's rights, El-Assal died shortly before the TV series screening.
Segn El-Nesa, presented by the Modern Theatre troupe, will be hosted at the Al-Salam Theatre stage.
The play is directed by Youssef Morad and includes large music and choreography segments with compositions by Mohamed Ezzat.
It will feature Haidi Abdelkhalek, Hanady Abdelkhalek, Sherihan El-Shazly, Nashwa Hassan, Aya Abu-Zeid, Safy Fahmy, Doaa El-Zeidi, Randa Gamal, Layla Magdy, Lily Mourad, Geni Atwa, Irini Magdy, Walaa El-Gendy, and Ikrami Waziry.
Segn El-Nesa will premiere on 31 March (the second day of Eid) at 9 PM.

Hannah El Zahed Reveals Near-Death Experience Shooting Film "El Shater"

Yara Sameh Egyptian actress Hannah El Zahed had a near brush with death while shooting scenes for her latest film, " El Shater ." In a recent conversation with "Al Arabiya" satellite TV Channel, El Zahed recalled she nearly drowned in a scene underwater, which required her to float and to stay put, she was tied down with iron. "People thought I was swimming, but the truth was, I was drowning," she explained. "The iron was very heavy, and I couldn't get to the surface on my own. They thought I was getting out, but I was actully dying,". "I was scared filming this scene," El Zahed noted, something common with her co-actor Mostafa Gharieb, who affirmed: "We were all scared of the scene. The only one who wasn't scared was Amir Karara." Karara explained that there was no cause for concern due to the professional divers underwater with them while shooting the scene, adding that El Zahed was feeling scared as the weight of the iron was too much for her. Released on July 16, the pic sees Karara returning to the action comedy genre for the second time since 2023's film "Baebae" (The Bogeyman). Ahmed El Gendy directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Karim Youssef. "El Shater" is co-produced by Synergy Films and Pyramids Productions and marks the first collaboration between Karara and El Zahed. The official logline for the film reads: "Adham (Karara) goes on an adventure and comedy trip to search for his brother with his friend Fattouh (Gharib) in Turkiye. During the trip, he meets Carmen (El Zahed), whose life changes 180 degrees after meeting her." The pic is competing at the box office with other films released around the same time, including "Ahmed and Ahmed," starring Ahmed El Sakka and Ahmed Fahmy; "Darwish," starring Amr Youssef and Dina El Sherbiny; and "Rocky El Ghalaba," starring Donia Samir Ghanem and Mohamed Mamdouh. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Rare Funerary Stele Handed Over to Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Antiquities Zone by Archaeologist Tamer El-Menshawy

Ali abo deshish On the morning of July 24, 2025, Egyptian archaeologist Tamer El-Menshawy announced the handover of a rare funerary stele to the Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Antiquities Zone. The artifact was delivered within the vicinity of the Mosque of Imam Al-Layth Ibn Sa'd, in preparation for its future display at the Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Visitor Center. El-Menshawy stated that the stele was uncovered during construction work for the new Salah Salem Corridor near the Qubbat Al-Munoufi and the Imam Al-Shafi'i necropolis. He emphasized the significance of this artifact as a rare example of Egypt's funerary heritage. He extended his gratitude to Dr. Rania El-Shiouy, Director of the Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Antiquities Zone, for her dedicated efforts in safeguarding both local and international heritage. El-Menshawy noted that preserving such artifacts echoes the practices of ancient Egyptians, who chose Anubis as the guardian of tombs — a symbolic reminder of the importance of protecting each piece of the nation's historical legacy. Additionally, the official page of the Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Antiquities Zone confirmed the receipt of a fragment of the stele — possibly inscribed in Turkish or Persian — in collaboration with civil society. The piece, which had not been previously registered, was handed over by Mr. Tamer El-Menshawy and is now preserved at the zone. It will be reviewed by the relevant committees in the Islamic and Coptic Antiquities Sector for study and potential registration. The department expressed its appreciation for his contribution and affirmed its ongoing commitment to safeguarding Egypt's priceless heritage. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
