White T-shirt season is upon us. These are the very best (from £19.90)
Alexa Chung recently wrote of her own quest to find the perfect white T-shirt in an Instagram post dedicated to Lee Radziwill, style icon and sister of Jackie Kennedy. According to Chung, Radziwill's favoured tees were 'tight and timeless', and styles that meet her aesthetic standards can today be found at Flore Flore, Hanro and Petit Bateau, where Chung found a £29 number that hits the spot.
Contemporary purveyors of the power of a great white T-shirt include Jeremy Allen White, who famously wears a version from German brand Merz b Schwanen in high-octane comedy-drama The Bear. Given that Allen White plays a tempestuous chef in the programme, his otherwise exemplary tee is often stained, but the look nevertheless emulates the irresistible Americana of James Dean and Marlon Brando.
The Holy Grail T-shirt will look slightly different for everyone. It might be a scoop, crew or v-neck. It might be off-white, rather than brilliant white. It might be slightly cropped as opposed to longline. It might even have a slogan or logo. Whatever the subtle variations, the perfect tee needs to maintain its shape and opacity, avoiding unwanted shrinkage and show-through. And, unlike chef whites, it absolutely has to be pristine.
In honour of that and the arrival of white T-shirt season, we've rounded up the best cult white pieces rated by our fashion team.

Best for: Subtle texture
While I love colour, texture, print, sparkles… so many of my outfits begin with a white tee. My preference is always 'slub cotton' (woven from shorter twisted pieces of yarn, which gives a subtle, nubby texture). I fell in love with Anthony Thomas Mellilo tees when I worked in America. They're so breathable and comfortable. They wash and wear brilliantly – even when you can't be bothered ironing them – and somehow always spring back into shape. No dreaded cauliflower sleeves! I always have a couple of Anthony Thomas Mellilo schoolboy tees in my wardrobe. They aren't the cheapest, but I wear them in constant rotation for a good three years before they start to look tired.

Best for: A quirky slogan
When I have no time to plan an outfit, my go-to look is a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt. Sounds exceedingly simple, but that's the point of easy dressing, I think? A well-cut pair of jeans with a crisp, white T-shirt and a good jacket takes me from the office to school pickup to evening dinner. If said white T-shirt has a slogan on it, all the better: that's why I really like the 100% cotton ones by Le Mot, a brand whose basics are designed in Paris and manufactured in Portugal. I have a couple of their T-shirts and they suit me to perfection: I wear a size small and it offers the perfect slim fit for my 5ft 3in frame, without being too form-fitting.

Best for: Lasting power
My personal white T-shirt go-to is the best example possible of the old adage 'buy cheap, buy twice.' Sunspel T-shirts are not cheap by any stretch (although they do go on sale), but they last for years. I've been fortunate enough to visit the brand's Long Eaton factory and see how the T-shirts are handcrafted, and I'd rather buy something knowing it's part of an industry that sorely needs support and creates local jobs than something mass produced in China and pumped with plastic. The cotton's incredibly soft, the seams are robust and the neckline doesn't sag and pucker the way a cheap T-shirt does. It also means that you can wear it with a suit jacket and feel smart enough, which doesn't happen with one that's on its last legs.

Best for: Boxy shape
I wear a white T-shirt more than anything else in my wardrobe and favour a boxy cut with just-above-the-elbow sleeves. I wear a lot of skirts and love the ease of throwing a simple T-shirt on top to balance out a more feminine bottom half. As I'm not tucking them in, the length has to hit just right on the hips and the fabric needs to be thicker to retain the boxy shape. I love Uniqlo's Airism collection (the T-shirt I'm wearing is from their collaboration with Sofia Coppola) and they have a range of fits in their breathable material to suit whatever your T-shirt preference may be, at purse friendly prices.
Oversized cotton crew neck T-shirt, £19.90, Uniqlo

Best for: Layering
While I used to strictly aim for a classic thick white T-shirt, I've recently opted for a more sheer option. Layering a simple vest top underneath and having the outline exposed lets me elevate a simple jeans or skirt outfit. This & Other Stories tee had been collecting dust in my cupboard for years while I opted for a more opaque look, but I've returned to it for the layered sheer look this spring. It's my way of feeling like I've put effort into a basic outfit, or at least I tell myself that.

Best for: Stain removal
I'm ashamed to say that I have not treated my beloved Cos white T-shirt with love. Nevertheless, it has persisted, surviving coffee stains and industrial quantities of Vanish. I've had it for years and it still looks fresh, striking, for me, just the right subtly boxy shape and slightly cropped length. I also have an oversized version, but this one is perfect for layering under blazers, jumpers and anything in between.

I'm a Celeb star lined up to replace Gregg Wallace on MasterChef
BBC bosses have lined up the presenter who will replace Gregg Wallace on MasterChef. It's being reported that the restaurant critic and I'm A Celebrity! Get Me Out of Here star, Grace Dent, will be joining John Torode when the show returns. Grace, 51, appeared on the hit cooking show as a contestant in a 2023 Christmas special and has served as a temporary judge while the BBC investigated alleged claims of historical misconduct made against Wallace. The Sun is now reporting, however, that Grace is set to become a permanent fixture on the show. 'Grace is a natural fit for the show,' a source told The Sun. 'She is also hosting Celebrity MasterChef alongside John.' 'Grace loves to support up-and-coming talent in the industry and loves the format of the show.' According to the Sun's source, the crew are hoping that when filming starts on the next season at the new studios in Birmingham that it will serve as a 'fresh start' for the series. The decision comes after Wallace was fired from the beloved cooking show on July 8 following a nine-month sexual misconduct investigation. Wallace initially stepped back from the show in November 2024 when 13 people accused him of making inappropriate sexual comments. However, since then, 50 more people have come forward to complain about the presenter's behaviour. It's been alleged that Wallace groped one colleague and, at one point, took his trousers down in front of another while not wearing any underwear. Prior to the news of his firing breaking, Wallace took to Instagram, where he claimed the investigation cleared him of 'the most serious and sensational accusations' ahead of the report's official release. In the post, he wrote 'I cannot sit in silence while my reputation is further damaged to protect others' and went on to say he was being discriminated against due to his autism. He accused the BBC of failing 'to investigate my disability or protect me from what I now realise was a dangerous environment for over 20 years'. Metros' MasterChef maestro Adam Miller shares their thoughts on the Grace Dent rumours… After Gregg Wallace's firing from MasterChef there was clearly only one person who could save one of the BBC's longest-running series from going up in flames – Grace Dent. Dent is refreshingly engaged with the future of culinary broadcasting, regularly popping up on various TikToks, helping to platform aspiring new foodies with a voice. She rates Michelin star meals with the same esteem as a really bang-on fry-up at a local café, and she's got razor-sharp wit, which would be the perfect antidote for Wallace's wince-inducing jokes. Wallace said he had decided to go public as the BBC News division was 'intending to platform legally unsafe accusations, including claims which have already been investigated and not upheld by the BBC and found not credible.' More Trending Since then, it's been reported that the former greengrocer is preparing to take legal action against the BBC and Banijay UK – the production team behind MasterChef. The inquiry into allegations against Wallace is being conducted by an independent law firm on Banijay, and its findings are expected this week. Metro has reached out to the BBC and Grace Dent for comment. Got a story? Michelle Keegan uses this portable Amazon fan to keep cool while in Bulgaria
If you're looking for ways to battle the heat this summer, take note as Michelle Keegan shares the portable Amazon fan she's been using to battle temperatures in Bulgaria As temperatures continue to rise across the UK, we're all looking for affordable ways to keep cool. And actress Michelle Keegan may have shared just the ticket. Giving fans an insight into her filming experience in Bulgaria, Michelle revealed she's been using this handheld portable fan to battle the summer heat. And we think we've found the one she's been swearing by this summer. Though it isn't clear which model exactly Michelle was using in the Instagram photo, it looks just like this TUNISE Handheld Fan in Black, which is currently up for grabs on Amazon for under £20. This Amazon Handheld fan looks just like the one Michelle used. It boasts a relatively small space, which makes it ideal for carrying in your hand, around your neck on a lanyard, or storing in your bag while you're on the move. It features a 90-degree foldable design that means it can also be propped on a table or desk to keep you cool while you work or sleep, completely hands-free. This portable fan retails for a wallet-friendly £16.99 and is available in a wide range of colourways, including Michelle's choice of black shade. Touted as ultra-quiet, this handheld fan boasts six adjustable speeds. The wind speed can be gradually increased from 1 to 5, depending on how cold you want the air. The sixth speed simulates a natural wind, ensuring you can keep cool with a less intense, gentle breeze. This handheld fan has a long-lasting battery life and a rechargeable 4000mAh large-capacity battery. It can work continuously for 4-18 hours (depending on the speed setting. Plus, it recharges super fast, only taking 1.5 hours to fully charge. Promising to to suit any busy day, whether you're getting your hair done on set like Michelle, heading to the beach, working in an office or travelling on a train, this fan is set to last all day - and if it's charge does run out, it's convenient to replenish its battery life with a simple portable charger or a quick plug in while you're out and about. Boasting an impressive 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, with over 8600 reviews, this fan has amassed plenty of praise from satisfied customers. One thrilled buyer beams: "This fan has been a lifesaver whilst pregnant! I took it on holiday with me, immediately used it in the airport as security was long and no air con before getting through to departures, used it in bar areas, outdoors on the beach, round my neck to carry it, and then on my return I'm able to pop it on desks at work when needed as it folds to accommodate being on sides." They go on to add: "The charge lasts well on levels 1-3 goes much quicker on the higher functions. I love how easy it is to use and it's definitely portable but powerful! It's pretty quiet depending where you are too and the function where you can use it as a powerbank in a pinch was brilliant. Cannot recommend this fan enough!" Another happy shopper raves: "Very happy with this fan - I've bought a number of different fans over the years, and while all are good, I realised this one was the best when I was comparing them all in terms of noise, wind speed / impact, and overall design / look / functionality etc. This fan has 6 settings, and is less noisy than the others, but probably the best airflow. What I noticed about this fan is that the airflow goes directly into your face, whereas some other fans can sort of fan the air around the side of your face, but not right into your face - so that was a big plus for this fan." They continue: "Also, I love the sleek design of this fan as well as the colour. Also a great size and sturdy (while also flexible when moving the handle), and the battery charge life also seems great. It's also great that it tells you the percentage of battery left, as other fans often just have a simple 3 bars - whereas this fan has the exact percentage so easier to know how much you truly have left. Very happy, thanks! Will probably be buying a second one soon!" And a third chimes in: " This fan is AWESOME. I used it on a recent holiday to Africa and it worked perfectly and was very effective at keeping me very cool (I wish I had bought 2 as my relatives kept borrowing fan was that good). Once fully charged it lasted me the whole day and I would usually leave it to charge overnight. It's a great, sturdy little fan and you should definitely get it." For other portable fan options, Amazon has plenty of best-sellers up for grabs for under £20, including this Jsdoin Hand Held Fan for £17.99 or this TopTrend1 Portable Fan for £11.97. If you'd prefer to shop elsewhere, check out this pick from B&Q which retails for £10.99, or head over to Marks & Spencer to find this Rechargeable Handheld Travel Fan for £10.
