BAMAKO, Mali — Mali's former prime minister was taken into pretrial detention on Friday after expressing solidarity in a media post with jailed critics of the military junta ruling the West African country, his lawyer and a close associate said.
Moussa Mara's arrest is the latest in a crackdown on dissent by Mali's military rulers following the country's first pro-democracy rally since soldiers seized power nearly four years ago.

Drug dealers hit with 340 years in prison amid major police crackdown in Essex

More than 340 years of combined prison sentences have been secured for drug dealers as police continue to tackle county lines across Essex. The convictions are the result of a six-month crackdown led by the Serious Violence Unit (SVU) at Essex Police, which includes the force's dedicated Operation Raptor and Orochi teams. In that time, officers have arrested 309 people, charged 236, and dismantled 93 drug lines, seizing more than 28kg of drugs, 89 weapons, and more than £302,000 in cash. They have also safeguarded 164 vulnerable or exploited individuals, many of whom were young people coerced into criminal activity. Three men were arrested after warrants were executed in Basildon and Pitsea in July. Rangairai Gwatidzo, 33, of Turner Close, Basildon, was identified as the controller of the line. Jason Kirby, 40, of Chevers Pawen, Basildon, operated the drug line phone, and Kevin Gormer, 43, of Goldhanger Cross, Basildon, acted as a runner. At Basildon Crown Court in April, Gwatidzo was jailed for four years. Rangarirai Gwatidzo (Image: Essex Police) Mr Gormer received a 21-month sentence, suspended for two years, and Mr Kirby was sentenced last month to 22 months, suspended for two years, along with 100 hours of unpaid work and a rehabilitation activity requirement. Detective Constable Daniel Onley, who led the investigation, said: "This case saw a wide variety of drugs recovered and a committed drug supply network removed from the streets of Basildon. "The trade in crack cocaine and heroin is rooted in exploitation, violence and the misery of addiction. "Where we disrupt the actions of county lines drug dealers, we bring down incidents violence and we bring down disorder associated with this activity. "This work is having an impact already in Basildon and wider south Essex." Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, praised the force's approach. He added: "The county lines drug trade shatters lives, blights communities and exploits the most vulnerable people. "Working with our communities, maintaining their trust and confidence to use stop and search effectively and building on the success of the Violence and Vulnerability Partnerships' public health approach to addressing serious violence, we have achieved great success."

A Welsh council's crackdown on illegal tobacco being sold in city shops

Over two years, 25 shops have been ordered to close as part of a police and council initiative to stop illegal tobacco being sold in Newport. Operation Firecrest was a joint Newport council and South Wales Police scheme which started in October 2023. It has seen hundreds of thousands of illegal cigarettes seized as well as hand-rolled tobacco and vapes. As part of the crackdown, 25 properties were forced to stop trading via legal closure orders, the council say. While the closure orders are only temporary, the council say they have been working with landlords to ensure that any tenants are operating legally. The city was recently dubbed the UK's worst for empty shops, something people hit back at. Two have changed use, one is vacant and another was closed recently. A fifth has reopened but appears to be now trading lawfully, the council say. In 2023, the council say an operation on Commercial Street saw a "significant amount of products" taken off sale. Five shops were subject to closer orders and three people were charged with fraudulent trading to which they later pleaded guilty. Councillor Mark Spencer said: "The illegal trade of tobacco and vapes is harmful to our residents and those communities where it is taking place. We will not tolerate it in our neighbourhoods or our city. "Closure orders can only be for a limited period which is why the officers have been working with landlords. We are grateful to those who have taken their advice in relation to the type of tenants they have and urge others to be vigilant. 'We would welcome changes in the legislation which would strengthen the action that can be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and the premises they operate from." The law has recently changed, and it is now illegal for businesses in Wales to sell or supply any single-use or disposable vapes. All vaping devices must now be both rechargeable and refillable to be legally sold or distributed.

Ivory Coast opposition denounces 'arbitrary arrest' of 6 party members

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — One of the main opposition parties in Ivory Coast has denounced what it says are 'arbitrary arrests' of six party members, calling the arrests part of a broader crackdown following the disqualification of key rivals to President Alassane Ouattara and his bid for a fourth term. Sébastien Dano Djédjé, the executive president of the African Peoples' Party–Côte d'Ivoire, or PPA-CI, the party of former President Laurent Gbagbo, said during a news conference Sunday that the party members were 'abducted and taken to unknown locations' overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Among them are party members from Youpougon, a suburb of the capital Abdijan, where armed attackers torched a bus and assaulted police days before, he said. Interior Minister Vagondo Diomandé released a video to a televion news broadcast Sunday showing a man identifying himself as a PPA-CI member confessing involvement in the attack and saying he acted on the party's behalf with 15 others. The confession was obtained legally, Diomandé said, rebuffing PPA-CI claims that party members were illegally arrested. 'In our country, no arrests are made arbitrarily,' he said. 'The ministry ensures due legal proceedings for all offenses, ending the era of summary and arbitrary detentions that once marred our nation.' The PPA-CI condemned the bus attack and denied involvement. Ivory Coast is set to hold a presidential election Oct. 12. Ouattara, who has been in power since 2011, is likely to stay in office with little or no challenge from a weakened opposition. Dissent has grown in the West African nation, fueled by the exclusion of main opposition candidates from the voter roll, including the PPA-CI's Laurent Gbabgo and the president's most prominent rival, Tidjane Thiam. Ivory Coast elections have previously been fraught with tension and violence. When Ouattara announced his bid for a third term in 2020, several people were killed in the ensuing violence.
