A Welsh council's crackdown on illegal tobacco being sold in city shops
Operation Firecrest was a joint Newport council and South Wales Police scheme which started in October 2023. It has seen hundreds of thousands of illegal cigarettes seized as well as hand-rolled tobacco and vapes. As part of the crackdown, 25 properties were forced to stop trading via legal closure orders, the council say.
While the closure orders are only temporary, the council say they have been working with landlords to ensure that any tenants are operating legally. The city was recently dubbed the UK's worst for empty shops, something people hit back at.

Over the course of the two year operation, the council say the following were seized:
481,790 illegal cigarettes
199.kg illegal hand-rolled tobacco (equivalent to 199,050 cigarettes)
26,856 illegal disposable vaping devices seized
25 properties were forced to cease trading by legal closure orders
Newport council say that in one shopping area, five premises were previously selling illegal tobacco and vapes and all were taken to court and magistrates issued closure orders.
Two have changed use, one is vacant and another was closed recently. A fifth has reopened but appears to be now trading lawfully, the council say.
In 2023, the council say an operation on Commercial Street saw a "significant amount of products" taken off sale.
Five shops were subject to closer orders and three people were charged with fraudulent trading to which they later pleaded guilty.
Councillor Mark Spencer said: "The illegal trade of tobacco and vapes is harmful to our residents and those communities where it is taking place. We will not tolerate it in our neighbourhoods or our city.
"Closure orders can only be for a limited period which is why the officers have been working with landlords. We are grateful to those who have taken their advice in relation to the type of tenants they have and urge others to be vigilant.
'We would welcome changes in the legislation which would strengthen the action that can be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and the premises they operate from."
The law has recently changed, and it is now illegal for businesses in Wales to sell or supply any single-use or disposable vapes.
All vaping devices must now be both rechargeable and refillable to be legally sold or distributed.

Mum's pram stolen at Butlin's - before being returned with 'sticky note'
A single mum says she was left feeling 'scummy' after her family pushchair was pinched during a holiday at Butlin's. Sophie was visiting the Skegness resort with her two children and some family friends when someone stole her son's pram from the buggy storage outside the swimming pool. Sophie was left struggling to get her 10-year-old daughter and four-year-old son back to their holiday apartment. She asked Butlin's staff for help - but claims she was shut down, being advised to spend £21 renting a replacement for the remainder of the holiday. "I'm disabled, so is my daughter. We came out of swimming carrying a heavy bag of wet clothes and had to phone Butlin's for someone to come and help me because I only made it half way back to the apartment", reports the Manchester Evening News. "My daughter, was overly distressed by the situation. We had to hire another one. They wouldn't even look at the CCTV." Sophie, from Derbyshire, explained she proposed implementing a ticket system for collecting the prams to prevent any being taken, but claims the firm 'aren't interested'. "Three days after it went it was thrown over the swimming pool fence into the external pram park with a note saying it had been borrowed for five minutes," she explained. "A mate of mine discovered it and when we went to retrieve it, we heard over the walkie talkies that another pushchair had just been nicked, it's a regular occurrence." The mother expressed her discomfort at having the pram back after it had been used by someone else. "I felt utterly violated," she confessed. "My little lad's pram had been in someone else's flat and they'd been using it. I felt so grubby using it." Sophie, who visited the holiday park in mid-May, posted about the incident on a Butlin's Skegness Resort Facebook page, sparking outrage among other parents. "Scum, it's high time Butlin's installed CCTV or even provided security in buggy areas," one parent commented. "How on earth can someone think that's acceptable behaviour," questioned another, with a third adding: "The real question is why has someone who clearly needs a pram come on holiday without one? Girl, 4, dies following incident at Waterworld in Stoke-on-Trent
A four-year-old girl has died following an incident at a swimming pool in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Police said they were "called to Waterworld on Festival Way at around 4.20pm to reports of a girl, aged four, in a critical condition". "Waterworld staff and colleagues from the West Midlands Ambulance Service treated the girl at the scene before paramedics took her to hospital for further treatment," officers added. "Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, the girl died a short while later. "The girl's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers." Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew from Staffordshire Police said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time. "We are now making enquiries and looking to establish the circumstances of the incident. We would ask that members of the public avoid speculating in these early stages of the investigation and allow the family to grieve." A Waterworld spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we learned of this little girl's passing this evening. "All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times. Waterworld is in shock and has decided to remain closed tomorrow out of respect for the family. Waterworld is working closely with the authorities at this sad time." In a post on Facebook, Waterworld said the fatal incident happened at 4.15pm, "in the lagoon area of the aqua park". The girl was "found unconscious and treated on poolside by our lifeguard and management teams on site. Glasgow bus service cancelled after 'vandalism' incident
A Glasgow bus service has been cancelled following an act of "vandalism." Stagecoach West confirmed that the X25 service scheduled to depart St James Road to Abronhill at 8.15pm, and the 8.56pm service from Abronhill to Millcroft, have both been cancelled as a result of the incident. The travel operator has urged affected passengers to seek alternative routes. "The X25 8.14pm departing from St James Rd to Abronhill and the 8.56pm departing from Abronhill to Millcroft." Police Scotland and Stagecoach West have been approached for comment.
