Foreigners to pay more at US national parks under Trump order
"For this anniversary, I've just signed an executive order to raise entrance fees for foreign tourists while keeping prices low for Americans," Trump told a cheering crowd at a rally in Iowa.
"The national parks will be about America First," the Republican leader said, after issuing an executive order.
In it, Trump also instructed the interior and state departments to "encourage international tourism to America's national parks."
The order outlined that revenue raised was to be used to improve the infrastructure and "enhance enjoyment" of the country's vast national park system.
It is a rare move by the climate sceptic president to promote the environment and green spaces.
In the executive order, Trump also revoked a 2017 directive by former president Barack Obama on "promoting diversity and inclusion in our national parks," in his latest attack on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives.
Some conservation groups have however voiced concerns about hundreds of National Park Service permanent staff members being laid off since Trump took office in January, ahead of peak tourist season in summer.--AFP

Vietnam posts 7.5% growth in first half of 2025
Hanoi has targeted full year growth of at least 8%. (EPA Images pic) HANOI : Vietnam announced today its economy grew 7.52% in the first half of 2025, the highest in more than a decade. The strong growth figure comes just days after Vietnam averted the most punishing of US President Donald Trump's threatened 'reciprocal' tariffs on its exports. 'GDP in the first six months of 2025 increased by 7.52% over the same period last year, the highest level of the first six months in the period 2011-2025,' the General Statistics Office said in a statement. The country achieved growth of 7.96% in the second quarter over the same period last year, the highest Q2 reading since 2022 when it hit 8.56%. Hanoi has targeted full year growth of at least 8%. 'Our country's socio-economic performance in the second quarter and the first six months of 2025 achieved very positive results, approaching the set target in the context of many uncertainties in the world and regional economy,' the GSO statement said. Vietnam's trade deal with the US announced this week has negotiated levies down from 46% to a minimum 20% in return for opening its market to US products. Vietnam has the third-biggest trade surplus with the US of any country after China and Mexico, and was targeted with one of the highest rates in the US president's tariff blitz.

Trump: Deal to buy TikTok almost done, US to start talks with China in next few days
WASHINGTON — United States (US) President Donald Trump announced that the deal to acquire the social media platform TikTok from the Chinese company ByteDance is nearly finalised, Russian News Agency (TASS) reported. Trump said that discussions on this matter with Beijing are scheduled for Monday or Tuesday (July 7 or 8). 'We pretty much have a deal now. I think we are going to start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday, perhaps with President Xi Jinping or one of his representatives. 'We think we probably have to get it approved by China. Not definitely, but probably,' the US leader told reporters aboard his plane. On June 29, Trump told Fox News that a 'group of very wealthy people' was ready to buy TikTok from ByteDance. He then noted that he would be ready to name these buyers in about two weeks. WASHINGTON/KYIV: U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine would need Patriot missiles for its defenses, after speaking with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday, and voiced frustration over Russian President Vladimir Putin's failure to end the fighting. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he had a good call with Zelenskiy, repeating that he was 'very unhappy' about his call with Putin a day earlier, given what he called the Russian leader's refusal to work on a ceasefire. Asked whether the United States would agree to supply more Patriot missiles to Ukraine, as requested by Zelenskiy, Trump said: 'They're going to need them for defense... They're going to need something because they're being hit pretty hard.' Trump touted the efficacy of the Patriot missiles, calling the weapon 'pretty amazing.' Asked about the prospects for a ceasefire, Trump said, 'It's a very tough situation... I was very unhappy with my call with President Putin. He wants to go all the way, just keep killing people - it's no good.' Zelenskiy said he had agreed to work on increasing Kyiv's capability to 'defend the sky' as Russian attacks escalate, adding in a message on Telegram that he discussed joint defense production, as well as joint purchases and investments with the U.S. leader. Ukraine has been asking Washington to sell it more Patriot missiles and systems that it sees as key to defending its cities from intensifying Russian air strikes. U.S. news outlet Axios reported, citing unnamed sources, that the call lasted around 40 minutes and that Trump told Zelenskiy he would check what U.S. weapons due to be sent to Ukraine, if any, had been put on hold. Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said he and Trump had agreed to 'arrange a meeting between our teams to strengthen air defenses. 'We had a very detailed discussion on joint production. We need it, America needs it.' The conversation came a day after Trump said he had a disappointing call with Putin. Russia pummeled Kyiv with the largest drone attack of the war across the capital hours after Trump's conversation with Putin on Thursday. Zelenskiy called the attack 'deliberately massive and cynical.' Kyiv in the past received Patriot batteries and ammunition from the U.S. in the form of aid under then-President Joe Biden. Trump criticized him for sending weapons to Ukraine without getting anything in return, and since taking office has overseen a dramatic shake-up of relations with Kyiv.
