Vikings report for camp realizing the hard work required to better a 14-win season
'More is required,' the veteran edge rusher posted on social media.
Three months later, Greenard's spontaneous slogan turned into a T-shirt. The motivational swag was waiting for every player at his locker upon arrival for the start of strength and conditioning sessions in the spring.
'You can only control your individual effort, and as long as you do that, you're going to pull somebody else and they're going to see that and it's going to be infectious for the whole team, the whole building,' Greenard said earlier in the offseason, explaining the purpose of spreading the word beyond a
simple tweet
.
The mantra has resonated throughout a
well-regarded organization
that will again field a well-built roster in 2025 but
still faces questions
about its viability as a championship contender.
The Vikings, of course, are one of the few
NFL
teams that have existed for the entire Super Bowl era but never won one.
'Because clearly that scale hasn't been tipped for us,' right tackle Brian O'Neill said, 'and we need to find a way to make that happen.'
As players reported to training camp this week, coach Kevin O'Connell turned up the volume on the messaging.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah
and
O'Connell
each signed contract extensions during the offseason, keeping their job statuses in sync as they embark on their fourth year together while also raising the bar for expectations. The Vikings have not won a playoff game since they arrived, a drought going back to the 2019 season.
'We feel proud of some of the things we've accomplished, but at the same time I think it's time for all of us to continue to look inward first,' O'Connell said Tuesday at a joint news conference with Adofo-Mensah to formally kick off the season. 'It's time for us to acknowledge what we're actually trying to build here, and what that's going to take is — in my opinion — an invisible presence of understanding that we're capable but we've got to put in a lot of work to feel totally worthy in those moments to get to where we want to get to.'
Darrisaw highlights list of healthy players
The Vikings started only two players on the physically unable to perform list: tight end Gavin Bartholomew (back), their sixth-round draft pick, and linebacker Chaz Chambliss (foot), an undrafted rookie.
That means left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who's recovering from reconstructive knee surgery after tearing his ACL last year, and new right guard Will Fries, whose 2024 season with the Indianapolis Colts ended early because of a broken leg, are right on track. O'Connell said both players would likely be limited to individual drills at the beginning of training camp to complete the ramping-up process, but the likelihood of having both key blockers ready for Week 1 is a vital boost for quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
Addison could face suspension after resolution of court case
Wide receiver Jordan Addison
last week pleaded guilty
to a lesser charge that resolved his 2024 drunken driving citation, clearing the way for potential discipline from the league. Adofo-Mensah said the Vikings have not been given an indication about the timing of such a decision.
'Obviously, when that originally happened, we knew that it was a possibility, but really you're talking about team building in general: You might not have players on the field for various reasons, and you've always got to be ready with depth,' Adofo-Mensah said.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson says facing Texans' WR room is 'like the Daytona 500'
How talented is the Houston Texans' wide receiver room going into the 2025 season? Just ask C.J. Gardner-Johnson how he feels after every practice. If you wanted speed, the former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back can attest it resides at NRG Stadium. "It's like the Daytona 500," Gardner-Johnson said Wednesday. "We're running fast every play. Everybody fast. All the cars are competing for first place. We've got a fast receiver corps. I'm going to be honest, it's probably one of the fastest corps I've ever seen. But they're a dynamic group with different skill sets. They're diverse." Last season, the Texans were poised to have a trio of talented pass-catchers as the foundation for a Super Bowl-caliber roster. Nico Collins, fresh off a 1,000-yard season, was expected to be the go-to target while rookie Tank Del seemed to be an ideal speed threat to throw in on the outside. Add in the arrival of Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs and everything seemed to be trending upward. Then came the injuries. Collins missed five games with a hamstring injury in the heart of the season. Diggs, who voided the final three years of his contract, suffered a torn ACL in Week 8 and missed the rest of the campaign. Dell missed time early on and eventually was carted off after hauling in a touchdown pass from Stroud in Week 16's loss against the Chiefs. He's expected to miss most, if not all, of the upcoming season because of recovery. In his place, the Texans added former Jaguars starter Christian Kirk. Collins, who is one of the best size/speed combinations at the position among league targets, once again leads the way as Stroud's security blanket. Kirk, who is entering a contract season, could be on the league's top slot receivers should he return to 100 percent health. In his last healthy season, the former Texas A&M standout had 1,108 receiving yards as the No. 1 weapon in the AFC South. Houston also used two of its first picks on the Iowa State duo Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Higgins, a 6-foot-4, 214-pound target, has similar size and testing numbers to Collins and been impressive in drills. "Smooth receiver," defensive back Jalen Pitre said of Higgins. "Like you said, he's very tall and very long, but he has every route in his arsenal. So, you definitely got to play him honest. Then, obviously, like we all would guess, when it's up in the air, he's going to go and get it. So, he's a great playmaker for us to have. I'm excited about what the future holds for him." Noel, who totaled over 1,900 receiving yards during his last two seasons in Ames, is only 5-foot-10, but he's a very explosive route-runner who can win in space and with athleticism. He led all combine wide receivers in the broad jump (11 feet, 2 inches) and tied for the lead in the vertical leap (41.5 inches). "Jaylin's already ahead of the curve just with the way he prepares and, you know, who he is as a person and as a player. Like I said, he prepares really well," Kirk said. "He's smart. And so, you know, for him, it's just, you know, going out there and playing fast, which I struggled with as a rookie." After a disappointing second season for Stroud, the Texans' offense was overhauled in the offseason. It's clear Houston loved its speed threat, so that's what fans should expect to see on Saturdays.

Lions predicted to pair Aidan Hutchinson with 4-time Pro Bowler who has 77 career sacks
The Detroit Lions need to add another edge rusher, plain and simple. After cutting Za'Darius Smith earlier this offseason, the Lions are relying on injury-prone veteran Marcus Davenport and a sixth-round rookie in Ahmed Hassanein to pick up the slack opposite Aidan Hutchinson. That's simply not good enough for a Lions team with a legitimate shot to win its first Super Bowl in 2025. The dream acquisition all Lions fans want to see is a trade for Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who remains in a contract standoff with Cincinnati that doesn't appear to have an end in sight. That means a trade is possible, and if that happens Bleacher Report's Moe Moton predicts that Hendrickson will land in Motown. Here's Moton's proposal and some of his write-up: Lions get: Trey Hendrickson Bengals get: 2026 second-round pick, 2026 fifth-round pick "Aidan Hutchinson is cleared to participate in football activities, but Detroit needs a reliable pass-rusher opposite him on the defensive line," Moton wrote. "As Super Bowl contenders, the Lions should be aggressive in filling a glaring roster need." We couldn't agree more with Moton. Detroit's Super Bowl window will not be open forever and general manager Brad Holmes needs to throw financial caution to the wind and make the big splash this team needs, no matter the draft capital and monetary cost. Adding Hendrickson would give the Lions the best one-two punch at edge rusher in the NFL. Hendrickson has tallied 17.5 sacks in each of the past two years and no EDGE in the NFL has more since 2023, and he led the league in 2024. On top of the draft capital, the Lions would have to give Hendrickson a new deal that pays him around $35 million or so annually. Is all of that risky for a player who is set to turn 31 in December? Sure, but if Hendrickson can finally help the Lions get over the hump to their first Super Bowl, nobody is going to be worried about the future implications of his contract. NFL.com projects Broncos defense to be best in NFL for 2025
Good morning, Broncos Country! The Denver Broncos defense took a giant step forward last season. After finishing the 2023 regular season as the 27th-ranked defense in points allowed, the unit catapulted to No. 3. There's no question the Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL. Denver led the league in sacks and EPA (expected points added). How good the Broncos defense was is one of the main reasons they finished the regular season with a winning record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl 50. Now, Denver's defense could be even better this year. An analyst for the NFL website projects the Broncos to have the best defense in the league this season. Beating out the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens. As the story notes, Denver returns 14 of its top 15 players in defensive snaps. The lone loss is middle linebacker Cody Barton. Plus, the Broncos signed Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw in NFL free agency and selected cornerback Jahdae Barron in the first round of the NFL Draft. 'So, the group that led the league in sacks and defensive EPA (expected points added) just got better.' You can read the rest of the analysis and reasons why Denver is ranked as the best defense heading into the regular season, but I agree with this projection. This defense is loaded, especially if Greenlaw can return to form and stay healthy. Knowing how good that unit is for them will make the lives of Bo Nix, Sean Payton, and the Broncos' offense a little easier. And let's not forget that Denver's offense will be even better this season as well, with the additions of Evan Engram and R.J. Harvey. For what it's worth, the same analyst projects the Broncos offense as the sixth-ranked in the NFL. For the first time in a decade, Denver has the chance for a fun and special season.
